Curious about people’s thoughts on Viney. Reckon he’s had an excellent year and with Clarry missing a lot of time and Trac being a gun at times, inconsistent at others, along with more time forward, Viney has really stood up as our dependable midfielder all year.
Absolutely stoked for Viney’s selection in the squad. Don’t know if many people who don’t watch a lot of Melbourne games would be aware of how good his year has been.

Yeah, nah Bolton won some games off his boot but he was more inconsistent and played more midfield than Dusty who played his role a lot more consistent.
Equal 50th for goals from a forward is non-deserving selection. End of.

There really was only 3 hawks options this year to potentially make the squad. it's surprising all 3 made it. Newcombe is actually underrated on here but its been a very good year for alot of mids so I wasn't going to be shocked if he missed. I somewhat agree Breust has been good this year but has had other years he has missed where he has been better, I think overall it's been a pretty down year for small forwards so I guess that's helped his case.

I think we had a conversation this year regarding and how historically goals has been the most important statistic when it comes to forwards making this team. Seems like we will have more of that this year, which I'm not against but Miers did have a good year.
Like I alluded to, Breust has been one of my favourites over the years and I still think what he's been able to do this year in that team has been really impressive. I definitely had Newcombe (and of course Sicily) ahead as far as Hawks though. Ultimately sheer goals rightly carry weight and I hope they apply that philosophy to the final 22. For that I knew Miers had no chance - even if he had 60 assists and 150 score involvements as we've never seen a pure creator selected as a forward before. If he had a 25 goal/25 assist season he'd have had a much higher chance. Maybe if he repeats the feat next year but adds another 10 goals he'll be in the mixer for consistency.

I would have Martin over Miers in my AA team myself, but it's a genuine 50/50, toss of the coin proposition.

Gyran's goal assist numbers this year may be too hard for the selectors to ignore.
The squad list is political, the team less so but it doesn't really matter if you miss the squad with zero chance of being named AA.

Geelong and Richmond both had used up a lot of AA chips in the past and had burnt all their favors on years of over representation of AA's. As soon as they dropped out of the 8 it was time to pay the piper and only 1 player allowed per team.

Surprised that they have selected so many half backs- Luke Ryan, Blakey, Redman but left out Newman

Seems like they have rewarded form in the fast half too much. Redman was good early on but quite poor towards the end.

Slection like Cripps real mystery too.Are they rewarding Captaincy?

And surprised Bolton did not even make the squad.

He offers a lot more around the ground as forward, than any other player in the competition, I don't think you realise how hard that is to do playing in the hardest position on the ground.
His game is more valuable than him just kicking goals alone.

Bolton wouldn’t have made the AA anyway. Or are you more disappointed he didn’t make some random number squad?

He's a lucky boy this year. 95th for score involvements. 225th for goal assists.

Should've made it to a couple of the final 2012, 2013 or 2015 AA sides though. Fantastic player.

And how is he going for kicking goals amongst small forwards? I would think that is what they get paid for. Midfielders focus on assists.

Your logic would make it near impossible for a small forward from a crap team to make it, given the players around them need to be kicking goals in order for their own performance to count.

Breust nearly kicked 50 goals in the 2nd worst forward-line in the comp, and kicking goals many times when we didnt have a single key forward.

Allen deserved his spot and Breust deserved his spot. 2 very obvious selections.

Gryan Miers and Sam Taylor seem the two harshest omissions - Miers is everything you want from a specialist half forward, while Taylor was the best KPD this year but seems to have missed out because he missed games due to injury.

I guess the argument against him is how would he go in a disfunctional or weaker forward line that can't capitalise on the looks he creates. It's a chicken or egg argument but if he goes on to replicate this year next year but adds an extra bow like kicking a few more himself it's going to be harder to argue against him.

I still think aggregate is the best method (goals and assists combined) and if that comes out close, SIs as the tie breaker. Breust had 5 more combined goals/assists but 57 less score involvements - which you're looking at being 25-30 extra goals.

Anyway neither were/are making the team so it doesn't really matter.

Miers kicked 7 goals in 23 games. You want specialist half forwards who dont kick goals?

Miers: 7 goals, 41 goal assists (13 behinds, so I think we know why he wasnt having many shots).
Breust: 47 goals

Even midfielders are expected to kick more than 7 goals to get a nod.

He sets up more goals than anyone in the competition - that's his role.
Breust plays closer to goal in a team with less competition for goals so of course he'll kick more.
