I guess the argument against him is how would he go in a disfunctional or weaker forward line that can't capitalise on the looks he creates. It's a chicken or egg argument but if he goes on to replicate this year next year but adds an extra bow like kicking a few more himself it's going to be harder to argue against him.
I still think Miers would've loved to kick to Lewis for 15 games and he probably would've gotten Breust and Moore a fair chunk of goals too. Remember, this year Geelong had no midfield and our transition game sucked. That we scored well was really just down to our 3 elite forwards and decent support cast around them. As far as supply, it wouldn't surprise me if Hawthorn had similar quality of supply this year.

But is not the best Defender in the competition?

GWS dont make the finals without him this year (and lessor extent Toby Greene).
it's the best defender throughout the season (or should be). if you're missing games constantly it makes it more difficult to select you, no?

Weitering v Andrews to me is decided on 6 simple metrics.

5.8 - Spoils - 9.5
1.8
- Contested Marks - 1.5
3.7 - Intercept Marks - 3.4
7.5 - Intercepts - 7.6
11.4%
- One on One DL% - 14.8
4.8 - Rebound 50's - 3.5

Imo the 6 criteria you need to judge a KPD on. The rest of the stats tend to just be stat padding trash - DE, Uncontested Marks, Metres gained... Couldn't care less about them as half of them get blown up in Luke Ryan esq kick to kick parties in the backline that lead to SFA.

I find it weird that it’s been said ‘Weitering doesn’t need spoils because he marks instead’ when Andrews intercept marks 0.3 but spoils 3.7 more.

Miers kicked 7 goals in 23 games. You want specialist half forwards who dont kick goals?

Miers: 7 goals, 41 goal assists (13 behinds, so I think we know why he wasnt having many shots).
Breust: 47 goals

Even midfielders are expected to kick more than 7 goals to get a nod.

Geez only 7 goals. Honestly thought he kicked more than that.

You don't have the Coleman medal winner in your team?
Think Curnow is a lock but purely for arguments sake the Coleman medalist has missed (Riewoldt in 2012)
Not sure if any other examples but probably is

Cripps has been ordinary most of the year. Had 2 maybe 3 good games all year.

The games they have won he’s been their best mid. Hardly some howler. Probably doesn’t make the side but as a squad selection no issue

I thought it was a good effort too. Although it's the same quality as all the ones you've rubbished, which reveals a little bias on your behalf.

There are a lot underrated players on the pointy end of that list. Papley and Adams have slept on everybody. By integrating productive score involvements you can filter out "but he just stays in the 50!" comments because all of the SIs starting way up the field are included anyway.

Martin did well with 86 but Miers with an estimated 100 while going at 19 disposals a game missed out on the squad. 14 goals is a fair difference so there's a question mark on that one. Bolton with 5 more I'd say was a fairer line ball decision. Breust made it on 69, the same number as O.Henry and Walters!

I’m glad Martin made the squad. He deserved that at least and it’s a good effort when you look at some of the names who missed (TT, Bolton, Miers, Jezza, May to name a few)

I think he’s 40/60 to make the final team. Finishing 13th and missing 3 games may be the deciding factor.

I won’t be surprised either way, in the team or out.

Surprised Cripps is in, thought Cerra and Newman would've got a look instead.

As for best mid, a lot of the time it's actually been Cerra. He set up the Collingwood win before coming off with a hammy.

He sets up more goals than anyone in the competition - that's his role.
Breust plays closer to goal in a team with less competition for goals so of course he'll kick more.
Miers has 7 goals and 41 assists.
Breust has 47 goals and 6 assists.

You're at selection committee picking players in the forward line. You're telling me you'd pick Miers? Is that you, Bevo?

LOL at Dusty getting in. Will be a disgrace if he makes the final team.

Rohan killed his season. Played for weeks like he was struggling with the concussion and couldn't move his shoulder too well.

I know. It’s inconceivable a guy averaging 24 touches, 1.3 goals and 7.7 score involvements per game in a team languishing in 13th might make the team.

Some shockers in there as usual, I didn’t think Luke Jackson had that good of a year to be honest.

If you just want to talk about marks, especially contested
Balta had them both covered and has more intercepts & rebound 50’s

Despite being played forward for the last few games

Don’t think he will make the squad or team but if people only want to look at stats they can’t be ignored

Balta's extremely rare skill set has come back to bite him in the ass

Either or not fussed had Cripps generally better but Cerra did have some very good games, just behind 2 other wingers

Finn Maginness is comfortably the best tagger in the comp. That's his role. No-one, including Hawks fans would have him in the AA squad. Playing a role isn't enough.

Cameron not even squad is pretty harsh don’t think he deserves team but was the best player in the first half of the year.
Probably would have made the squad if he finished strong and started slow, recency bias is real though.

Breust Goals + Goal Assists = 53
Miers Goals + Goal Assists = 48

Geelong kick 63 more goals than Hawthorn, Miers contributed 15.7% of Geelong goals compared to Breust 21.7%, I'd say it's pretty conclusive

Miers missing a spot shouldn't be surprising to anybody.

He's arguably this seasons version of Dylan Moore from a squad omission perspective.

Will be interesting to see if another small half forward misses next season despite elite numbers that aren't pure goals kicked.

Yeah I actually don't think squad is that controversial. You think the best 22 is line-ball, I thought squad was line ball because of the names you mentioned (the 44 is tough enough to make, let alone the 22). And games missed can be a tie breaker but I'm guessing the disposals + SIs combo was seen as sufficient (like Stewart for rebounds and intercepts last year when it came to best 22).

And if he does make the team, I might not agree but I'm certainly not going to cry about it. Personally I've had other forwards ahead for different reasons.

Luke Bruest plays a different position and is not in the squad, so you post and sly dig at the end are both bizarre

The squad list is political, the team less so but it doesn't really matter if you miss the squad with zero chance of being named AA.

Geelong and Richmond both had used up a lot of AA chips in the past and had burnt all their favors on years of over representation of AA's. As soon as they dropped out of the 8 it was time to pay the piper and only 1 player allowed per team.

That’s not correct for Richmond at all sorry. Being the dominant team from 2017-20 Richmond were underrepresented if anything.

Even this focus on Martin this year as though he gets AA ‘favours’ is amusing, as in 2019 he was clearly the dominant mid-fwd in the comp and didn’t make it.

Averaged 26 touches, 1.4 goals, 1 goal assist and 7.4 score involvements in a top-4 team and missed.

I won’t talk for Cats selections, but no favouritism for Richmond over the years.
