Prediction 2023 - Best 22 + Emergencies - Rolling

Side is getting harder and harder to pick. Especially through the back line.

There’s about 28 I want to squeeze in or consider best 22 players

FB - Williams Young Doc
HB - Saad Weitering McGovern
C- Acres Cripps Cerra
FOL- TDK Walsh Hewett
HF- Martin Charlie Fisher
FF- JSOS Harry Durdin
Bench- Kennedy Cuningham Newman Kemp Pitto

Emergencies from- Boyd Honey Cottrell Owies Motlop Dow LOB Marchbank Plow Philp Dow

I want to squeeze Boyd Motlop and Marchbank into the team but not sure who they displace.

Sound like Doc will play more midfield time from Austin's comments.

My preferred 22 and second team/depth would be:

Marchbank, Weitering, Young
Williams, McGovern, Saad
Docherty, Walsh, Acres
Fisher, Curnow, Durdin
Silvagni, McKay, Motlop
De Koning, Cripps, Hewett
Kennedy, Martin, Cerra, Newman

Depth:
Plowman, Durdin, Boyd
------, -----, -----
Cottrell, Carroll, O'Brien
Honey, Kemp, Cuningham
Owies, Akuei, Fogarty
Pittonet, Dow, Philp
Mirkov, Curnow, -----, -----

Not consigning players like LOB or Cotts to the 2s all year, that best 22 will be very fluid depending on injuries and form - but what this shows to me is the list is well balanced and we have stars on almost every position. To my eye we need one more goal kicker, a consistently decent ruck and some of our depth to step up into the seniors (Philp, Kemp)

My preferred 22 would include Boyd (can lockdown on small/med fwd and great disposal by foot). Also if all our mids are fit, think we should use Kennedy more up fwd as a 3rd goal kicking target.

Boyd, Weitering, Young
Williams, McGovern, Saad
Docherty, Walsh, Acres
Fisher, Curnow, Kennedy
Durdin, McKay, Motlop
De Koning, Cripps, Hewett

Silvagni, Cerra, Newman, Martin*

* Pitto if we come against teams with 2 genuine rucks like Melb.

I'm surprised at the lack of Kemp in the best 22
He's too talented to be missing from our best 22.

I'm expecting Kemp to force his way into our best 22 and stay there.
He has had enough time to recover from his injuries and in 2023 is ready to shine :D

He has only played 6 games in the 3 years he has been on the list - admittedly he has been injured - but in those games he hasn’t shown enough to suggest he is going to make it IMO.

Also his versatility is a strength and weakness - he can play either end of the ground - but as a result never gets a chance to settle into the rhythm of playing in a designated spot.

I certainly share your hope he will force his way into the starting 22 next year but until that happens you can’t pick him on talent/potential and based on what I’ve seen so far IMO he is not best 22.

I think if he is to break in to the side, it is likely to be at the expense of the favourite son.

There is just no room in the backline with Marchbank and Gov fit. It already appears we will push Doc more into the middle to accommodate others like Boyd.

I reckon if it goes to 5 on the bench and we can fit both TDK and Pittonet in, then that spells trouble for JSOS. He is very vulnerable to someone with more speed, which Kemp has.

Picking the team now, Jack plays ahead of him. That might change by March though.

Saad Young McGovern
Docherty Weitering Williams
Acres Hewett Obrien
Martin Curnow Fisher
Motlop McKay Durdin
Pittonett Cripps Walsh
Boyd Cerra Kennedy Kemp TDK

JSOS, Marchbank, Newman, Ed, Cuningham stiff.

Carroll forces his way in as the season progresses.

A bit of talk about the specialist tagger being back. Brisbane used it to very good effect in the finals against Prestia pre injury and Clayton Oliver and apparently the key to winning or losing against Brisbane was whether Lachie Neale was tagged or not.

Maybe the possibility of having five on the bench next year makes it easier. We have a young midfielder who ticks the important boxes of size, skill and speed in Jack Carroll and it and tagging a star midfielder every week could be a great way for him to develop into an AFL midfielder himself.

Have always believed Cuners (and the team) would benefit in that role

In addition to the trades and draftees, we get a "new" recruit from injuries every year:
  • 2021 - CC
  • 2022 - Marchbank
  • 2023 - Cuners
They all add to a stronger best 22 for us - bring on 2023 :D

Newman Durdin Plowman
XXX Marchbank XXX
Cottrell XXX XXX
Cuningham Ed Curnow Kemp
Owies SOJ Honey

Markov Dow Carroll

IC: Philp(?) XXX XXX XXX XXX

Backs well covered by bolded players above
LoB / Martin and Fisher no guarantees to beat the bolded players I have put up.
Caroll has shown less than Kemp but I like them both.

We are still 'short' a couple of developing mids and at best Markov is still at least a year away from pushing for a game in AFL - would like an alternative ruck on board - he wont be able to play ruck in VFL all year and all games anyway.

Big risks are Kennedy and Hewett they have proper injuries to get over.

Reckon our midfield depth is great going into 2023 (Ed, Carroll, Dow, Fogarty) but if I were a betting man only Carroll remains on the list beyond that.

A developing mid and a forward capable of rucking at the draft are a must imo. Followed by a true KPD.

AFL have our best 22 as:

B: Mitch McGovern, Jacob Weitering, Sam Docherty
HB: Zac Williams, Lewis Young, Adam Saad
C: Sam Walsh, Adam Cerra, Blake Acres
HF: Jack Martin, Charlie Curnow, Zac Fisher
F: Corey Durdin, Harry McKay, Matt Owies
Foll: Tom De Koning, Patrick Cripps, George Hewett
I/C: Jack Silvagni, Jesse Motlop, Matt Kennedy, Nic Newman

Emerg: Lochie O'Brien, Caleb Marchbank, Marc Pittonet, Matt Cottrell

This is a pretty good 22 actually, although I would like to swap Boyd in for Newman and Cuners in for Owies

I don’t like the fact that both Marchbank & Kemp didn’t make the best 22 - but, it’s a great problem to have - i.e. solid debate at the selection table every single week :D

Bring on 2023!

Boyd and Cunners out I feel are based on lack of viewing from the assessor. Newman definitely the player in our backline who is in the “last on, first off” line I feel. Boyd definitely looked good to take his spot.

Cunners a variable. Like Marchbank we have seen some good glimpses but a horrid injury run has denied them continuity.

Would love to see Kemp and Carroll out genuine pressure on the starting 22 for a spot.

Riley Beveridge knows CFC pretty well though

Today’s 23, subject to change…

FB: Williams Young McGovern
HB: Docherty Weitering Saad

R: DeKoning Cripps Hewett
C: Walsh Cerra Acres

HF: Martin Curnow Fisher
FF: Durdin McKay Motlop

I: Marchbank Boyd Kennedy Carroll Kemp

E: Newman O’Brien Silvagni Pittonet

Wildcard: Cuningham (needs to get on the park, could be in the 23)

Young the relief ruck, having the extra tall defender allows that. Kennedy splitting on-ball and a marking half forward.

Walsh more wing than mid, Cerra more mid than wing.

Doc splitting time between hb and wing.

Carroll wing and hf with a couple of centre bounces for good measure.

Acres full time wing with Walsh, Doc, Cerra & Carroll covering the rest of the wing time.

Could easily be Jack or Pitto for kemp, Newman for Boyd, Cuningham/O’Brien for Carroll.

What’s that d word?…
