What gives you the impression that they thought he would make a great sub?

He was our sub 8 times last year and only got activated twice.

LMFAO

The coaching group didn't rate him if they couldn't assure him playing time in 2023.

I am really happy for Bedford. I am glad he found a role as a major contributor in a top 4 side. It's gotta be better than playing reserves for a team that loses in straight sets in successive years!
Last year it was still a medical sub wasn't it?

I was probably a bit harsh on the Jefferson pick at the time, definitely has potential and might be a really good pick up, but will take a long time to find out.
I get the feeling we basically didn't rate anyone outside of the top 10. We were very keen to trade up and the coaches/recruiters looked pretty flat when we finally picked Jefferson.

I don't think the club thought Bedford wasn't afl standard, they didn't want to lose him. He definitely showed glimpses and made a great sub but his full games probably wasn't doing enough.
He’s more of a running/sling shot type of small attacker but that wouldn’t have suited our game style this year.

More reason to change the way we go forward - you need to best use the list you’ve got.

For the sake of the argument, let's say we get 22 (without bids) for Grundy, end of 3rd round for JJ (57 without bids), and a pick between 30-50 for Harmes and/or Spargo. We have genuine ammo for Gold Coast's pick 4, in terms of points.

I think we would have enough to take a player with that pick, and still tempt the Dogs to part with Naughten by including our Future 1st. It would be a great outcome and not saying it will happen, but I would love it to.
If North get P3, then maybe the Dogs go for that pick, instead of the Suns pick.

Leake gave AFL recruiters a lot to think about in his final game of the season. He started in the forward line and kicked two impressive goals, then moved into the midfield for the final three quarters of the game. After taking some time to get going, his final quarter as a midfielder was very strong, using his size, strength and speed to find the footy inside the contest and on the spread. Leake looms as an intriguing prospect.

I am flummoxed that people think Petty is our saviour.

He's a battler. I can't recall a time a player has improved after a lisfranc injury either.
Hardly a battler. Has shown he's more than capable of holding a key post down back, and has shown more than enough down forward to suggest he can hold down a key post there as well. Competes in the air better than any other forward on our list and can apply pressure also. Solid on the lead and a very accurate kick. How many blokes we had on our list in the last decade or so that's proven they can kick half a dozen goals? Not saying he's the saviour here, but he's hardly a battler. Pretty excited by what he can produce. The lisfranc injury isn't ideal. Time will tell with that i guess.

Guy on 'Land' saying that he's hearing that we may be having a crack at Tom Hawkins as his currently out of contract.

Like this idea. Give him one last crack at a flag and at the very least can paper over til next season when a number of forwards will be coming out of contract

Tom Hawkins likes to take the ruck in the forward line so goes against our plan of having no ruckman contest.

I just can't see him playing for another club. He's certainly one that would be ideal. 1 or 2 years. This bloke doesn't know how to phone it in. He can take ruck duties down forward, contest in the air, great lead, can be awesome for JVR. I just struggle to see him leaving the Cats. They'll be thinking they're a chance to go again next season..

I really like this guy and would be a good fit for us with our second pick.

He also likes to mark the ball in the forward 50 and make leads too, which also doesn't work with our plans

I think he's a great player and can still contribute at AFL, but why the hell would he come here?

He's an all time great with nothing left to prove. Staying put lets him become a 350 game/800 goal one-club player if he plays on next year.

People would have said the same about Hodge Mitchell and Lewis

I agree with you.

His leadership ability would also be an asset in our front half, especially for our young players who are still a bit clueless.

Who knows, maybe we offer him two years to the cats one year, aspirations of coaching and a promised pathway. He'd hardly be the first player to go down that path.

One club player means nothing anymore. No one will remember him as anything other than a cat no matter what he does.

And if he were to move, why would he chose Melbourne over Collingwood for example?

It would still get him to a flag contender. He will also get to play in front of a crowd every week, in a side that can move the ball forward with purpose.

Sam Mitchell is a hawthorn champion that played a year at West Coast. I don't think anyone thinks his career is tainted because he didn't stay a hawk for life.

Why doesn't every player go to Collingwood?Maybe we have cap space to accommodate the move and Collingwood don't idk. Just saying it's not that crazy an idea.

Yeah, but you are also overestimating our list managers ability to target players that fill a specific need.

I reckon the brains trust are more likely to do something stupid, such as making a play for Dylan Shiel instead.
