FORMER West Coast rookie Hamish Brayshaw has been crowned the 2023 Sandover medallist after a standout season with WAFL club East Perth as a goalkicking midfielder.

Brayshaw, who spent 2018-2020 on the Eagles' list, polled 26 votes to win by a significant margin from West Perth onballer Luke Meadows (19), teammate Angus Schumacher (18) and Swan Districts midfielder Jesse Turner (18).

Hamish Brayshaw won the Sandover medal this year. He’s 25 years old and would be a could fit for Casey with his brother at the club.

A couple of other options in the top finishers perhaps too.
Nah. Another same same inside mid who's at the level of Dunstan. No thanks.

I wouldn’t. Would rather Sanders + Windsor combo over Mckercher.
Fair enough – for me, McKercher is far more of a need than Sanders. Sanders is a good prospect, but his kicking is pretty untidy and lacks penetration, plus he's not overly quick once the ball is on the outside. McKercher on the other hand is a zippy line-breaker with beautiful disposal – for mine, that's worth paying up for.

Of course, won't be devasted if it ends up being Sanders, but he doesn't bring in much that we don't already have, and is unlikely to be able to play roles that aren't inside mid. McKercher on the other hand could start off on a wing and rotate inside while he's still developing. Fits our team like a glove.

I thought Dunstan was a fantastic one to have on the list.

Obviously not from a senior selection perspective, but rather to keep the Casey team competitive.

I’d have no problem bringing in 1 or 2 late picks/rookies who are basically there just to keep the engine humming at Casey and break glass only in for the seniors.

If we can bring in a couple of young mids with earlier picks I’m sure it would help their development.

Time will tell but at this point McKercher looks a level above the others.

I am splitting hairs as to whether I like Harley Reid more or McKercher as the best prospect in this draft.

I think at this stage it's a complete waste of time having blokes on the list just to play well for Casey because they get in the way of development of young kids. Dunstan, Brown etc are just sending kids to the outside of their natural roles. Other good teams don't have mature age plodders just for the sake of it

That’s where Windsor comes in.

Seems to be a trend with us too, the club always seems to have older guys go on one year too long.

Thats what Munro and White etc. are for. He currently doesn't offer anything we need. Better play would be to convince him to join Casey with the option of being drafted if he rounds out his game.

Sort of hard to avoid with Brown as we had to give him something better than what North could offer but it's still baffling we gave 4 years to Tmac after he had already shown signs he was slowing down at the time.

4 years to Tmac was a disaster. Brown was also clearly a year too long, but it's what it took to get him to the club. Not ideal now, but after the premiership, who cared. Hopefully one of these two aren't on the list going into next season. I can't see both being chopped unfortunately.

TMac 4 year deal sorta made sense at the time as he was in excellent form. What didn’t make sense was a two year extension at the end of 2021 to push him out until 2024.

didn't they do that to spread his salary out further?

Either way if he had any dignity he'd retire now and be remembered somewhat favourably by the fans.

Believe that the extension was done that way to stretch out his existing salary over more years, thus minimising the cap space he was taking up.

Still, never made much sense committing that much cap space to him in the first place.

His contract was due to run out at the end of 2022 and we gave him 2 more years on top.

We could have just not picked up Dunstan but oh well.

Is it me or has the rumour mill completely gone dry opposed to 2 weeks ago. We have gone from having an article telling us every time Grundy hung a shit to radio silence (across all teams).

It will pick up properly in a weeks time.

If that’s genuinely the case it’s just bad cap management, as such a move meant our 2022 cap situation must have looked very concerning.

Curtin signed off on his draft year by helping Claremont to another WAFL Colts premiership. He was a significant presence in the midfield for the first three quarters, helping Claremont dominate in that area, before being dropped back into defense in the fourth to try and help stem the tide with Perth controlling territory. One knock on his performance for the day was his kicking efficiency which was uncharacteristically poor.

I think whilst the Finals are coming to the conclusion and the day after, trade talks gets put on the back-burner. As soon as next Monday, the first of the off-season, rolls around it recommences. That's how it usually happens.

What is a bit unusual though this year is that it's rather dull and quiet.

Probably shows how boring this year’s trade period is going to be if a washed up hack like Grundy is big news.

**** we've been unlucky with available KPFs, Richmond get a prime Tom Lynch, Cameron walks to Geelong, just nobody available during our window, the same again this season really.

Wouldn't call it luck. We've spent a fortune on Oliver Petracca and Brayshaw and left clearly not much room to chase anyone else.
