Jordan Boyd was a pretty left field selection who has surpassed expectations.

Wilson kind of reminds me of Zac Williams in how he goes about it. I wish him all the best.

I wasn’t as surprised by Boyd because of the Doggies connection but yeah good luck kid. Plenty of top picks don’t make it so @ pick 29give ‘em hell!

It’s the interviews and the quality of individuals that are always hard for people on the outside to assess. Means so much

I can only assume Moir & Wilson presented very well and are quality kids. Voss will want players with real drive
Wilson and Simpson played on the same side for Dandenong Stingrays I believe. Need to back our recruiters. Wilson won the Stingrays best and fairest.

Just love the arm chair experts! Neither pick was hesitated, they obviously picked the blokes they identified a long way out. Moir will eventually replace the Martins/Silvani's on the list; Wilson will build into the Saad/Docherty's . You blokes apparantly think there are massive gaps on the list, don't see it myself. Bring on the Campo's next year and we have the next generation already at hand. This represents a complete turn around on our draft thinking, we're planning for the future before our eyes. Just have a look at how 9thmond are playing their hand....
We added Cowan last year as a half back flanker, our mid field could still do with more outside run, Simpson was more suited based on our list needs for next year.

If kids are terrible by foot entering a draft you aint changing that now.

You cannot be drafting kids that early that are ball butchers in todays game and look at Dow who we took inside the top 10. He also has the same question marks disposal wise.

VFL player at best. 🤦‍♀️
Rookie central lists strengths as - Kicking.

Person on internet says he's a ball butcher.

Hmm, who should I believe?

The knock on Wilson is contested work and composure. Both can come with physical development and experience.

Exactly. If you were to ask this forum to name a player with these strengths and weaknesses:

STRENGTHS:

  • Accumulation
  • Kicking
  • Rebounding
  • Speed

IMPROVEMENTS (improved with experience)

  • Composure
  • Contested game

The player who most would name immediately is the player it will be hoped Wilson will eventually replace.

Saad.

I understand others were preferred - I too wanted someone else - but I can completely see the justification of the selection

It's a definite need in the next couple of years.

You don't pick players 'a long way out' unless there are extenuating circumstances as to why they might still be available. I just don't see that with our second pick. It seems a reach to me when he won't be replacing a depth player. If he's Saad mark II then I'll eat my hat.
Dude he's not picked for the current finals tilt, obviously!! He's the next gen, building into the defence of 2026 onwards, with the Campo's, Binns, Moir, Cowan (if he stays), the Irish.......
Sounds to me that you wanted that pick available now, to replace who? And this is Simpson...
Let me know how he fits in I'm INTREAGUED??

Draft Central site Wilson's kicking as a strength but. Composure as a weakness.

The latter can be gained with experience.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Ollie's weakness also listed as composure last year?

Last few minutes of that semi sure proved it wasn't much of a problem.

Hopefully Wilson is much the same.

I've had my mourning period now. So long Cooper Simpson. Welcome Billy!

On a serious note, I've had my heart set on so many players over the years that ended up being no good. For all we know Billy plays 200 games and Cooper is a bust.

I dont believe the club deserves blind trust but Austin has been good enough so far that he's got mine for now.

Not blind trust, but you trust until they give you reason not to.

Drafting different though. Everyone here has 50 different players to each other. This means Austin has to pick the best player out of 50 to avoid criticism from everyone.

All we need to do is listen to his explanation for his plan and decide whether that makes sense or not.

For all of us that like Cooper Simpson, he went at #35. For a pacy, linebreaking inside mid, that's pretty low. Why? I don't know, do you? You can bet the recruiters do though.

Agree not overly excited in the choice.
I'll come around and support Billy

But, in the meantime I can't help but compare to those that were picked around him and compare their career.
The comparison is not limited to only Simpson, but Hastie, Lual, Jiah and of course MEdwards :straining:

Paddy Dow was also a future AA and total gun on that site as well. Rookie me central is a total wankfest and find me a negative on ANY player in the draft??

Believe what you will and it is like a shifter Sheehan type run down where no kid has a weakness and everyone drafted is going to be a AA and total gun.

You seem to be very naive.

👍
Simpson had shit stats anyway.
Btw, I didn't think much of Cripps on draft night, and I thought Sammy Rowe was gonna be a jet!

Hopefully though, when things get tough over the years - and they will - both these kids will remember that this club went after them specifically.
They are wanted players because they are capable.

Is there a list anywhere which has who nominated for the rookie draft?

Everyone who nominated for the national draft but missed out.

Ollie was criticized for composure and iffy disposal.

From day one he demonstrated a level of awareness inconsistent with the criticisms.

Wilson will have a couple of years to come into his own.

This selection screams a long term view rather hwn a need for him to come into the side next year and do a job.

If he can have some good performances in the second half of the VFL season next year it'll be a tick. Anything more and it's ahead of schedule.
