Question - Aiden O’Driscoll, getting write ups (seemingly due to brother & sister both being listed players)
No one has him in top 50, but he recorded the best sprint & finished top 6 in 2k.
All reports saying he’s got great follow up & attacks the game/ball.
What’s missing? Usually the youngest in a family who plays has good skills.

Doesn't win much of the ball, is small (176cm) and very outside. Been playing mainly wing but his attributes probably better suited to a forward role at the next level, however, he hasn't spent much time there despite kicking quite a few goals. Has AFL level traits but maybe not the right combination of them to suit a particular position.

I really like the look of O’Driscoll and his later games in the champs. we’re full of promise, but more as a HHF than a wing. Rewatched an early game and was surprisingly, to me, was a fair way off. Plenty of intent, but to me not a natural winger. A but like our Cotts, gets lost a bit positionally on the wing. Better at the fall of the ball for mine, screams forward. Must add a significant amount of size to be AFL ready, not a plug and play. Has the raw talent for mine.

Not a second rounder, but would be a great speculator later.

Looks like no draft pick swaps in this period between trade week closing and today which is the last day allowed before draft night.

AFL marketers won't be enthused with this 3 weeks of dead air lol.

Might be manipulating it for draft night, WC trade pick 1 + with North

What's better (for the AFL) than a high-profile pick trade.....?

Three weeks of hypothesising about a high-profile pick trade!!!

The peeps will tune right out after the trade week next year though, as nothing happens in this pick trade period. It has become as dead as the PSD.

Looks like it is AFLW time between Trade Week and Draft Night now. Which the AFL probably don't mind. But looks like AFLM fans can safely tune out for those 6 weeks now.

No movement from GC has been good news though. More chance that those 3 picks between ours get swallowed up now. They only have until the Walter bid now on Draft Night to move them. And i don't see why it would need to be held until before pick 2 to be done as opposed to now. At that level, there wouldn't be any more certainty for the few clubs with multiple lower picks to trade for a pick in the 20's than there is now, 10 days out.

So i see that as good news for us.

The reason goldcoast haven't moved is they can only enter the draft with as many picks as they have list spots but once the draft starts that rule doesn't apply. Then they will be able to trade their 2nd rounders for as many picks as they want. They will do those trades as soon as the draft opens you'd think.

Confirmed, no pick trades done.

Also, the second Delisted Free Agency period closed today.

Monday sees lodgment of father/sons, and importantly for us, international rookies. Once that is done, that's it till trade day.

Our Midfield needs a lot more depth, and I think is our most volatile area. Even with everyone we have fit,
Kennedy & Hewitt (as you mentioned) aren't 2 way runners and although they battle hard, they are limited.

This year we Delisted/Traded Ed Curnow, Paddy Dow, Zac Fisher, Lochie O'Brien & Sam Philp, who were all rotated through the midfield as well as O'Brien & Curnow being excellent 2-way runners.

We don't have much in development in this area and even with the Campo twins coming onboard next year they will take a while to develop. I think we need 1 more Marquis speedy 2-way mid with skills. Bailey Smith would be ideal.

I'm hoping Cuningham can step up in the midfield but he seems to fade out as soon as he builds some form.

I also think Williams 100% needs to play Mid/fwd.

Harley Reid sure would help too. :(
Our midfield is really good when it comes to ball winning, contested ball, statistically looks really good BUT. And IMO it's a huge but, it has a massive weakness with two way run.

We sacrifice forward run, good/fast ball movement and a style of game that supports our forwards so we can defend.

Half our midfield can not two way run.

Because we defend first we have to put those one way runners behind the ball. But because they are behind the ball they are absent when we get the turnover and want to go forward quickly.

When we are going well, the opposition aren't overly strong, we give license to Cripps, Kennedy and Hewett to stay forward and we look a million bucks. Part of our turnaround this season was giving them more license to get forward of the play more. We rolled the dice and it worked, we relied on our defenders to be able to defend one on one. Come finals we went with a defend first game and we won some close, low scoring games but our forward struggled and our ball movement was rubbish and we were exposed but a side who was just too good.

So what we need to do is maintain our ball winning, contested game and high stats count BUT add two way run to the side.

This means we need to pick up a couple of two way running mids who can win 25 possessions per game. That way when we come up against next level teams in finals we can be strong defensively but offensively really put the opposition under huge offensive pressure, make them run really hard defensively and go forward more with more one on ones and a more open forward line.

Two way run is not just about being able to run all day it's also now about being able to run all day at speed. Curnow had lost a lot of pace and lost a lot of ability to two way run, was caught in no mans land a lot this season.

This is how we improve enough to be a premiership contender.

Like the Williams idea. Hoping for Cuningham to go next level as well. Hoping for Hollands to take over from Kennedy/Hewett and be able to two way run at AFL level.

We need onballers.

Really hope Tholstrup gets to our pick but doubtful. If not, I’d be more than happy to pick up Charlie Edwards, Simpson or Gothard.

If we did get Gothard I’d actually play him in defence rather than as a forward to start his career. Feel he has great awareness and reads the game well. Could be a very handy type coming out of defence and uses the ball well.

Respectfully disagree. Whenever we're playing at our best its when our half forwards are getting involved up the ground. I remember the start of last year seeing Owies and Durdin bobbing up in the defensive 50 to help run the ball out and get speed on the ball, later in the season that completely dried up and so did our wins and scoring ability. Same happened this year mid season. Cuningham, Fogarty and Martin all got fit and helped turn the ball over in dangerous spots which led to quicker rebounding footy and higher scoring.

In my opinion Walsh Acres Cerra Docherty and Hollands are exceptional defensive minded mids but we lack potency and speed with ball in hand going forward because of our half forward line.
While I agree that Cripps Kennedy and Hewett can be exposed a bit in the running game I still think we can carry two of them with the amount of run we have elsewhere if we improve our half forwards, just like how Collingwood accounted for T Mitchell's lack of spread and defensive pressure this year.

Geelong in their premiership run in 2022 had a pretty mundane midfield overall, Guthrie, Dangerfield, Selwood, Atkins, Duncan. Smith + Holmes on the wings/HHF created a lot of run for them but their on ball brigade was ordinary. A lot of their quick ball movement was generated from their half forwards and half backs linking up. Close, Miers, Stengle and Cameron were ridiculously good that year at not only moving the ball forward at speed but also forcing turnovers and creating scoring opportunities for teammates through precision ball use.

Austin has said that we've identified that area of the ground as an area for improvement going forward, we have added two players already but I would be shocked if we weren't looking at taking one with one of our draft picks.

Nice post! What great analysis.

I do agree re the half forwards. But I have one question on the whole half forward v mids debate. Would our need for good half forwards be so great if we had midfielders who were better users of the ball by foot? My view is that a lot of our speed issues are actually ball use issues in the midfield. That is, if we had a really good distributor in there by foot, I think they would make the team play quicker. But am I barking up the wrong tree?

Either we are keeping our cards close to our chest or we aren’t interested in the players Twomey likes around our picks.

Cooper Simpson didn’t get a mention. He’s our current flavour of the month so it’s encouraging that he could last to our picks.

Billy Wilson was the other one we had previously been linked with who didn’t rate a mention in this top 30.
