Hey Giant Strides, is the salary cap still tight or has it eased after losing Taranto and Hopper?

Just noting in last weeks Herald Sun article, Giants had 7 players on or over the $700,000 mark and two over $1m.

That is a lot considering we aren't sure what Hogan, Tom Greene and the next batch of guys have or are signing on for.

Salary cap is still $13.2m?
A few others have responded, but I'm dubious about some of the figures quoted, or at least they're more at the bottom level for some rather than everyone at the top of the range. Salary cap will go up this year ... if the agreement is ever signed off ... but no-one knows for sure what's written in contracts about moving with those changes. However, as another article noted, GWS isn't actually trying to hawk Whitfield to other clubs, and does not have a significant TPP problem. I think we'll be tight-ish, without capacity to go out and rip someone away from another club, but not so tight to have to be offloading players.

In any case, if we were tight, Himmelberg would be the first guy we'd let go for FA, but we're actively seeking to keep him.

So, I doubt that we're "in TPP trouble" as a few posters seem to want to think.

Listened to the Squinters podcast with Milky… good mates with Harley Reid and said Harley wouldn’t mind at all if he landed at Giants.
Could be similar to Whitfield in that he was actually looking forward to coming to the giants because he had so many mates already at the club.

Also nice work by milky in being best mates with both Cadman and Reid, and might even aid him in getting an extra rookie contract.

Love some signatures starting to come through about now.
Surely Ash and Riccardi get done, Himmelberg I worry about.
Every year we lose a quality player.
Himmelberg has had our formal offer for weeks now, so you would assume that he’s still negotiating with us? Ash said that he was going to talk to his agent during the bye week.

some trade rumours from Fox

Tall utility Harry Himmelberg and classy halfback Lachie Ash both remain out of contract as the trade and free agency period quickly approaches, but Kingsley says he is still “comfortable” with where talks sit with the pair and hopeful of keeping both on his list.

The Giants are also yet to re-sign Jake Riccardi, who could attract significant rival interest after standing up with three goals in the stirring round 11 win over Geelong and booting five against Fremantle a fortnight ago. Hawthorn has been linked to the 2019 draftee.

Matthew Flynn and Braydon Preuss are also out of contract, with both likely to be targeted by other clubs looking for big men as new GWS first choice Kieren Briggs rockets towards the top bracket of ruckmen in the league

Xavier O’Halloran signed a one-year deal until the end of 2023 when he was left in limbo over the off-season last year, but a breakout season at half-forward and on the wing has him certain to secure an extension.

The way I see it.... If we lose Himmelberg I think I can take that. Seems his spot is as an intercepting half back flank now and we have Haynes still playing decent football and a young Leek Aleer plying his trade in the ressies who will be pushing to get in the team as soon as the end of the year. If we lose Himmelberg we will likely gain another first round draft pick.

Lachie Ash, I would love to keep him. BUT, we also have ready made replacements for him in Isaac Cumming as well as Josh Fahey developing in the reserves. Again we will get a first round draft pick for him.

X.O. is having an amazing season and I think we would offer him a 2 year extension.

Flynn and Preuss I feel at least one will leave maybe Flynn to another club probably for a pick in the 50's and Preuss hopefully we can get him rookie listed like we did with Phil Davis this year.

Yep… Fahey would step straight in for Ash

Brown re-signs to 2025

Great news! Felt bad for him when he couldn’t play a game as the sub on his official debut. His last year on the current contract, will be the same as Kingsley’s whose contract with us also expires at the end of 2025
