HARLEY TO DON THE SASH

PROSPECTIVE No.1 pick Harley Reid is expected to play for Essendon's VFL side next week as his season hits its final block.

Reid was named in the under-18 All-Australian side for the second straight year after his impressive carnival for Vic Country before having last week off under the Coates Talent League fixture.

This weekend he will line up for the Bendigo Pioneers, with a view to playing for the Bombers potentially the following week in the VFL side.

Reid trained with Essendon during the pre-season through the AFL Academy program, where he impressed with his tenacity and smarts in match practice.

He has already played two games with Carlton's VFL side earlier this season, where the game-changer set things up from half-back in his second appearance.

A number of Victorian draft prospects have tasted VFL action at stages this year, with potential top-five pick Zane Duursma playing his second game for Casey Demons last week, while Sandringham Dragons prospect Harvey Johnston played for Collingwood's VFL side last weekend as well.

In coming weeks Nate Caddy (Carlton VFL) and George Stevens (Geelong VFL) could also taste the higher level. – Callum Twomey
Why cant we get any of these guys coming to us to play in our VFL team.....

The most pissed side regarding Sanders will be Adelaide.

1. They will be after midfielders with their first pick, as they have most of the rest of their list sorted other than top end elite young mids. Sanders is arguably the best in the draft when ignoring hypothetical ceilings. They may look at Duursma who isn't the out and out center square midfielder they would be after imo.

2. They currently have the 6th live pick, it would have been right in the sweet spot for him

3. Hamish Ogilvie traditionally loves Tasmanian prospects, as prior to the Tassie AFL side announcement, they didn't pose a go home factor.

He would have ticked like every box for Ogilvie as a best available/needs combination imo.
100% Hamish absolutely loves Ryley and Colby!

l would make it known that we are after Curtin at pick #2. If the Weagles want Curtin them they will have to hand over there Pick#1 to us and we give them our pick #2 ...Time to play hard ball..This way we get Harley Reid and they get Curtin...Everyones happy...Remember #1 and #2 are only numbers so no one will lose...

:think::think:

Its possibly a dumb question, but would we prefer:
  • having 2 and 3, where we can get any 2 players on the open market aside from Reid, or
  • having 1 and 6, where we get Reid, but we have to take whoever is left over from McKercher, Curtin, Duursma, O'Sullivan, Watson and Caddy?

Even though I chucked the trade option up, I’d still stick with 2 and 3.

And I would absolutely make it known I’d be taking Curtin with one of those picks. If WC want him, they can take him at 1.
Trading out Barrass and having an ageing McGovern means you think they’ll want him.

Every AFL club’s biggest list chasms… and stars they can draft to fix them - Every AFL club’s biggest list chasms… and stars they can draft to fix them

NORTH MELBOURNE

Draft picks:
2, 17, 39, 53, 59

List chasm: Clearly there’s several issues the Roos need to address. Their backline has copped a lot of heat throughout the year for their poor skill and defensive ill-discipline. But they could also look to bolster their forward line – with talls or smalls – just to provide some support for star goalkicker Nick Larkey, who’s kicked 48 of his team’s 181 goals this season. Considering its strong draft hand, North could go in a few different directions though.

Ideal draft prospects: There’s a couple of star forwards right near the top of the draft class. A competitive and dynamic yet smooth-moving 189cm forward prospect with so many attributes, Gippsland Power’s Zane Duursma could be right at the pointy end of the draft. Duursma – the brother of Port Adelaide AFL/AFLW duo Xavier and Yasmin Duursma – possesses a strong football IQ and can take a strong overhead mark or kick a match-winning bag of goals. Eastern Ranges goalsneak Nick Watson, who finished as the leading goalkicker of the national carnival with 14.6, has unbelievable goal sense, finishing ability and cleanliness at ground level. Or the Roos could look at versatile 195cm Claremont product Daniel Curtin, who looms as a star intercept defender at AFL level yet also has the capabilities to play in the midfield. Whether the Kangaroos go for a midfielder like Tasmania’s Colby McKercher, though, could depend on whether they’ll be able to pre-list fellow Tassie star Ryley Sanders, which rival clubs expect to happen. And if Ben McKay leaves and the Roos get a juicy first-round compensation pick back, don’t rule out North making a play for Pick 1 and, subsequently, Harley Reid.
"Every AFL club’s biggest list chasms… and stars they can draft to fix them"

First suggestion for North is another medium forward. Pretty much sums up the absolute lack of research that goes into these articles.

Wondering if he AFL will give us Sanders as a pre list or ability to match a competitor bid with a larger discount, say 40%. This would be to appease the other clubs as we would have to work some kind of deal to get points. Likely deal pick 17 to Lions for their Rd 1 next year.

Probably keep 2 and 3 in that instance but I like a third option with Melbourne trading up if ladder position remain as is.

Melb pick 1 (Reid)
WCE pick 2 (Curtin)

We end up with 3 (McKay) and 5 which gets us 2 of Watson, O’Sullivan and McKercher. Add to that extra draft capital from Melbourne which could be handy to target GC pick or give to GWS in salary dump.

A lot to play out but all situations appeal.

How the f*k does melbourne end up with the number 1 pick? I understand they have freos first but what are they going to offer west coast? If we are into Curtin it does put the eagles in a tight spot

They have picks to offer up including their own R1, F1 and also R2 tied to Freo. Just a matter of whether they appeal to WCE and us or whether they need to add more. Forgetting about what would satisfy WCE, we would only do it if we got sufficient return ourselves.

They're also the best in the business at manipulating their draft currency back and forth. Almost at a different level to everyone else.

Freos pick 4-5, their pick this year and a future next year.

If Melbourne trade up to pick 1 WCE doesn't have pick 2. Am i missing something?

Isn't it linked to regions or something?
Reid is Essendon because of the old Bendigo Bombers link to the Pioneers.
Hes also played for Carlton VFL side. l dont think were linked to a region however someone please correct me if l am wrong..

Melb - 1
WC - 2 & F1
NM - 5 & 15

Something like this, I'd imagine.
That could work especially if we get pick 3 compo for McKay as has been suggested. That would give us 3,5,15 and Port's pick. Watson and O'Sullivan, McKercher to Hawks you'd think in that scenario.

Agree. Tell them trade with us or we take Curtin...end of story..**uff Melbourne

The AFL can easily satisfy and help resolve two problems this year by doing similar to what they did last year but in a different way.
They (AFL) can bring 3 parties together (on the quiet by video link) - WCE, us and Sanders management.
Give a priority pick 3 and compo pick 4 for North for the loss of McKay.
Norths pick 3 and 4 will be traded to WCE for pick 1.
North cannot take a WA player with pick 2.
North must use their pick 17 on Sanders.
Insert clause in Sanders contract that he can leave for new Tassie team if he chooses with a round 2 compo pick.
The outcome:
North finally has the opportunity to take the pure No.1 U18 player in the land and the No.2 (Watson IMO).
North gets a top 10 talent as a set of steak knives disguised as part of assistence package and appeases the rest of the competition by having to use pick 17.
Sanders gets to play with Sheez and his management are happy that if Tassie calls and he wants to go, he is free to leave with already agreed compo.
WCE trade a possible flight risk in Reid, for two top 5 draft picks, one they can use pick 3 for Curtain and the other for any player they wish to take, make a bid on Welter, watch GC sweat; make a bid on Read, watch GC sweat...
Media Announcement #1 - After the GF, AFL announces North to receive support via priority pick 3 and Sanders as part of NGA, using pick 17.
Trade Week Announcement #1 - During FA period and If McKay leaves, AFL announce compo pick 4.
Trade Week Announcement #2 - Announcment that North and WCE have entered pick swaps with NMFC P3&P4 to WCE for P1.

The AFL have quietly helped WCE in their commencement of a ground zero rebuild with 2 picks inside the top 4 and clear message to North that this is the last assistance package you will get with the greater leverage that these two clubs will support any AFL measure when required.

AFL will be happy that a top 8 (Melb) side doesn't get a look into the top 5 pick before two of their struggling clubs or the ability to land the No.1 talent in land.

The rest of competition won't be happy but hey, when do other teams care about anything unless it's themselves?

Of course all bets are off if McKay re-signs and WCE are adament that they will take Reid.
