I was reading up on Zane Zakostelsky (whom everyone is calling ZZ Top). 196cm just won the best on ground in the wafl colts game that Curtin also played in. Played as an undersized ruckman and had 22 possessions.

But he apparently ran a 2.85 20m in pre season testing and has only been playing footy for 2 years after switching from basketball (also had a massive leap).
That’s the type of athlete you want, plenty of upside.

How does he compare to the O’Sullivan’s of the world? Does t get it anywhere near as often but could be a better stopper at afl level?

O’Sullivan was the Captain of the Allies, MVP of the Allies in their Nationals win, AA.

So naturally will be rated over Dawson who had a very good Coates League season and decent for Vic Country but not on O’Sullivans level.

Dawson has a high ceiling though.

Understood. A bit like Curtin, I’ve been a little concerned with O’Sullivan’s actual ability to stop a dangerous key forward. He looks ultra comfortable getting involved in the play and can rack up numbers.

Im just wondering if Dawson has displayed a tighter defensive ability?

Exciting to think we have so many options

You seem to know your stuff. What’s the go with Wil Dawson? Seems another tall with tremendous upside.

200cm, almost 90kgs, played lockdown back, played up forward. Great in the air and on the ground.

What am I missing?
You’re not missing anything, he has been invited to the National combine where he can showcase some possible athletic traits. This may elevate his rankings.

Yes.

A lot of the commentary around Dawson since he moved back was despite low disposal numbers, the impact he’s able to give defensively because of his reach and athletic ability.

Also one of the best contested marks in the draft.

He’s a better intercept/contested mark than Curtin.

The likes of Dawson and Zakostelsky are the reason we shouldn’t just burn those PP, 14 and 19 away.

There’s no reason why we can’t trade those PP into similar positions on draft night.

You could easily walk away with both Dawson and Zakostelsky and still pick up elite smalls in McKercher and Watson.

The point I was trying to get someone else to make!

I’ve read opinions that this draft is going under the radar a little in overall depth of talent. That the top 40, despite not having clear cut stars other than Reid, it’s a very exciting and even top 40.

I’d love to be getting 14,19 and the two futures to take 4 players between 14 and 25. You could conceivably go best avail 2 and 3, plus Dawson, ZZ, Morris and Archer Reid if you wanted to focus on key position.

Then best avail for our first next year and we are set.

Leake, Zakostelsky, Dawson and Lual.

Rejuvenate the entire back line in one swoop.

I’m not sure we really need to invest in key forwards particularly if we manage to get Chol.

If we recruit Watson + George + Sheezel spending more time there + hopefully a full season from Chom finally, changes it completely organically.

I am somewhat besotted with Harley Reid unfortunately. (**** you Val Keating)

Still don't want us to overpay (please) but would like him to arrive at Arden Street on draft day.
Is it a defendable position to be both relieved and happy over our final-round win, and also feel this way about Reid? I'm starting to think my brain needs a steam clean

Saw that highlight reel a while ago and tbh i didnt see JHF play as well as Reid did well when playing seniors in the SANFL although perhaps i missed a few.
Yeah, but gee can you imagine the levels he and wardlaw would push each other to in the same team! I'm indifferent, would love him at our club but not at any price.

I hope like f*** that we don’t trade any of our first three picks(2,3?,14). They can do whatever they like with the PP’s though. One of our missing puzzle pieces is a quality FB/CHB. Curtin could be the guy. Reid is definitely going to west coast at this point
Hello brother.

That's the big question mark re: Curtin. He's definitely a top AFL prospect. Potentially a very very good player with all the tools.
BUT... is he a CHB/FB? We think (by we I mean the accepted rhetoric on our board) no, he's an oversized rebounding high quality third tall. Not necessarily what you need either, in which case are North better off targeting O'Sullivan who seems to have shot up the board, or even Zane Zakostelsky, another Claremont tall? On our board we hope our second pick brings us ZZ, but he's copping a bit of media attention of late, maybe he won't last?

Pretty much all the elite defenders in the league are essentially oversized rebounding qulity third talls and have been for years.

You should know this, McGovern has been one of them

May and Petty do all the dirty work for Lever.

Payne and Gardiner do all the dirty work for Andrews.

Hurn and Barrass did all the dirty work for McGovern.

Grimes and Astbury did all the dirty work for Rance.

Murphy and Quaynor do all the dirty work for Moore.

Pretty much all the best key defenders try and play as a +1. Because they are the best intercepting players in the league.

The real question is, can he intercept and take contested marks in that role when he fills out? He can certainly move and he can certainly kick the ball as well as someone like Moore.
