Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

It pains me to say but Geelong had a great draft

11 - O'Sullivan
32 - Mitch Edwards
36 - Mannagh
58 - Stevens

They had one decent pick at the start and walked away with 4 good players

Yep, and plucking Wiltshire from the Bellarine league has "will be a good player written all over it".

15kg lighter Levi Casboult.

Ridiculously good contested mark and aggressive attack on the man and ball. Keeps it simple with his possessions because he's not a very polished disposer of the footy to say the least.

My concern is most of his footy has been as a ruck, but there's no way he's an AFL level ruck. I'm assuming we're looking at him as a forward/ruck or maybe turning him into a defender, but I struggle seeing him adjust to defense. He was decent at VFL level as a forward in the final 3 games so there's some scope for development there.

A good contested marking forward will compliment Larkey nicely

I seen a bit of Maley this year in the VFL and nothing screamed out AFL potential to me. He played as an undersize ruck for the first half of the year and in the few games I watched it really showed that he was struggling to compete physically with the bigger bodies.

I can’t comment on his forward craft, because I didn’t watch any of the later games where he played more forward.

I guess if they see him with more upside than the likes of Weatherill or Van Rooyen then I guess I’d be happy with it.

Still plenty of upside considering he is only 20.

Bullants coach Brodie Holland said the development he saw was off the charts.

“A couple of (AFL) clubs have wanted to find out more about Finnbar and I know he’s caught up with one club,” Holland said.

“I’m not sure he’ll get drafted or even rookied but he’s not far away, if he can show one more really big improvement at VFL level he’d be a big chance next year.

“You never know with these ones, the guy is almost 200cm and mobile and only just started playing footy so he’s only getting better and better.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if someone puts him on a rookie list and sees if they can develop him.

“When he arrived at Bullants I wasn’t far off cutting him because of his kicking skills but I thought I better give him more of a chance.

“He just kept improving and because of his athleticism, his jump and marking his strengths far outweighed his weakness and now his weaknesses are competent enough.”

Maley is the son of former North Melbourne Giants and Adelaide 36ers star Paul and fellow basketballer Karianne, while his sister Anneli is the 2021-22 WBNL MVP.

The rising talent returned to football after the COVID pandemic.

While asked to ruck for the majority of the season with the Bullants, he projects best as a key forward who can pinch-hit in the ruck.

“We were forced to play Finnbar in the ruck all year, when he’s really a forward who plays as a second ruck.

“He would have still learnt a lot from that and we probably haven’t seen the best of him as a forward because he didn’t get to play there that often.”

Finnbar Maley (Northern Bullants)
Ruck/Key Forward | 198cm

There’s plenty of high wraps on Maley, who dominated this year’s NFNL Grand Final with six goals to help Eltham secure the flag. He also turned out at VFL level with the Northern Bullants as a mobile ruck/forward, and has plenty of development left. He comes from a strong family of basketballers and may be the ideal rookie as a classic late developer.

Plus some good write ups on other potential picks. Some mentioned by others on here include

Sam Clohesy (Werribee)
Defender/Wing | 189cm | 12/12/2002

There is plenty of stock put into the Fothergill–Round–Mitchell Medal each year, and Clohesy was the recipient in 2023. Having seen Werribee teammate Shaun Mannagh taken in the National Draft, 20-year-old Clohesy has developed nicely in the VFL this year to put his hand up for the draft once again. He missed out while in the Calder Cannons program, but has strong potential as a running half-back.

Jack Callinan (Tasmania Devils)
Small Forward | 179cm | 07/10/2005

The son of 32-game Crow Ian, Jack Callinan is a chip off the old block. He’s a crafty small forward with terrific footy IQ and goal sense, able to crumb at the fall of the ball or hold his own overhead. Having grown up in Adelaide and supported the Crows, Callinan eventually came through the Devils’ pathway, booting 23 goals in 11 games this season. He also represented the Allies and National Academy.

Will Patton (West Adelaide)
Defender | 192cm | 04/01/2005

Highly regarded by state Under 18 coach Tony Bamford for his reliability, Patton is somewhat of a forgotten man in draft circles. The All Australian defender is capable of playing on talls and smalls, and loves having the ball in his hands. He’s just shy of being a genuine tall at 192cm, but competes well aerially and looks to set play up with his left-foot kicking on the rebound.

Nathan Philactides (Oakleigh Chargers)
Defender | 179cm | 10/01/2005

Along with Patton, Philactides is an AFL Academy member who gradually slid down the order this year. The run-and-gun defender has serious wheels and often plays in a high gear, looking to turn defence into attack with his speed. The Oakleigh Chargers prospect represented Vic Metro as a bottom-ager and turned out for Richmond’s VFL side this year, so is relatively well accomplished.

Koen Sanchez (East Fremantle)
Midfielder/Forward | 177cm | 19/01/2005

Perhaps the player most unlucky to miss out on being selected in the National Draft, there remains a chance that clubs are looking at Sanchez. The diminutive midfielder-forward overcame bottom-age injury woes to get a good run at it in 2023, proving a shining light for Western Australia with his work rate and speed in both positions. He also earned a Reserves berth with the Sharks.

Ha, none of them... I was joking he was the big fella in the middle.

The article talks about him but the picture is 3 other players.
This is a serious forum mate. You ought to know that there's no tolerance for jokes or chicanery here. Now go and think long and hard about what you have done and when you are good and ready, after a serious bout of self flagellation (not that!!!) you can come back and pay some proper respect to those who live and breathe the very air that big footy exhales.

It's the Essenden jumpers in that picture picture that you need to apologise for!

And giantroo , my gosh!!!! You too!

I'm guessing that we want some depth in terms of big fellas who can take a mark up forward.

We have Larkey, Duursma, Zurhaar, George etc who will lead and kick goals.

CCJ has some concussion issues. We want to send Comben back and, even as a forward, we can't rely on him playing.

A big guy who can play a role, mark and bring some forward pressure sounds useful.

If he can mark then I'm happy.

We just need someone tall to play a fwd/ruck role. We have goal kickers like Duursma, Zurhaar and George down there with Larkey.
yep a fwd/ruck will complement our forward line perfectly. Someone to occupy a tall defender and be a marking option when we kick down the line.

Welcome to the club!
He does have a large head

So much so they are moving him on....

Mick Ablett putting his hand up for the gig......sees unicorns and rainbows everywhere, comparing 3rd rounders with elite talent, and if his prophetic words were true, gee he'd be the all time greatest recruiter. In fact Poorta should hire him could work wonders with their draft haul.

What the club says:

"The plan was just to pick the talent at the top and then address some of those needs (with ruckman Goad and defenders Dawson and Hardeman). It was decided a while ago (North would take McKercher and Duursma). We just thought that they were the two best talents too hard to pass up on." - Kangaroos recruiting manager Will Thursfield

Exactly as neddy36 said.

It's a done-deal.

Also, you're not getting Curtin.
