Yeah, anpther takeaway for 2023 (and the past few years actually) is how QB numbers are dropping from the days of Brady, Brees, Manning, Rivers etc, and how gadget QBs can do a more than serviceable job. Like, all those bog names right now....Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, Wilson, Lawrence, etc, are still only doing as well as the Devitos, Howells, Flaccos, Heinickes, Minshews, etc.

So yeah, Browns didnt have to trade the farm and invest so much money into Watson when guys like Flacco could've been had for next ti nothing and still done as well or better.

While I tend to agree on the idea of pick to play QBs I do think a settled QB gives the coaching group AND players a longer term plan in setting plays etc.

If you have plays designed as simple as possible you can get away with it short term but the comfort of knowing Patrick can change a play mid snap puts the defence on edge

( I have never believed in multi-billion dollar deals)

Its been the year of the backup QB for sure. Ive never seen a year like it. Backup QBs getting so many wins and impressing every week.

Defences are much better today than they have been in years.

This is due to higher level coaching in the college ranks. Bigger faster DL. More mobile LB, CB & particularly S.

Safety’s probably have the biggest growth in performance behind the DL. They are faster but also way better coached. Previously you would see only a few ball hawks across the league at Safety, now there are multiple ones available.

You also have to look at the level of backups at Safety being almost as good as the starters. There use to be a huge drop off but not any more.

You have 2 defences this year that are going at historic levels for DVOA. Usually there is just 1 every few years at that level but having 2 is an anomaly.

Looking forward to the battle of the Big Ds this weekend.

Defensive schemes too are much more complex now. Showing man but really zone. Showing zone but reaply man. At the snap changing coverage from 1 high to 2 high. Delayed and concealed blitzes. Etc.

The Schemes are just downright brilliant in their intricacies. WRs rarely get big numbers, except for the elite few. TEs go alright but the S/LB covering them are getting bigger and faster.

I think that a big OL with a dynamic RB, has become the biggest weapon in football. Too many coverage LB and pass rushing DLinemen; not enough run stoppers. Just watch the Bills completely own Dallas and their team will go as far as their RB is healthy. Same with 9ers. Even Miami will only go as far as their RBs stay healthy.

Be interesting to see how the Chargers go without Staley

The Chargers were chargering long before Staley joined them, and I expect will continue to charger long after he's gone. I know where my money will be.

It's an interesting dilemma for GMs. A top-tier QB is what they all want as it means you're almost certain to be in/around the playoffs for a number of years even if the surrounding talent leaves a bit to be desired. Maybe you luck out on some decent rookie talent in skill positions and in defense and you can balance out the big QB contract. But recent history has given at least some evidence that having a functional, young QB on a smaller contract can be a path to the SB because there's so much more salary cap to play with at every other position.

The Watson contract was insane, regardless of the non-football issues it was still an enormous gamble on someone who hadn't played much in a couple of years. I do think if you have drafted one of the top 6-8 QBs in the comp it's hard not to give them the massive contract, and probably the right thing to do. Trading away draft assets to give a massive contract to a QB who isn't guaranteed to be in that top tier is borderline negligence though.

Really looking forward to somehow losing to the Giants.

We might not be on tv? Outrageous!

NFL Network is available through ESPN+, right?

If I do the free 10-day trial for Foxtel Go, do I get access to ESPN+ for next weeks game and for the few Bowl games that aren't on the normal channels?
No, eagles game is on FOX not NFLN.
and the fox copyright team are campaigners who have even DMCA'd their own content so they will be on the hunt for illegal streams.

Like this is how bad the Fox sports takedown team got.

Also its not just plays, everything covered by them was hit. even the clip where my avatar came from was DMCA hit

How many that you would consider a genuine backup would you say have had prolonged success so far though?

I think it's too early to go on Flacco. Dobbs had his couple of weeks. But backup guys win games all the time.

I think it's unfair to call Minshew a backup by the way, he was kind of shipped off when he was producing fairly well in Jacksonville and now has shown he can start in the league.
