Think Rugby League being in Brisbane Olympics is very likely. Flag Football getting in purely in cause of host nation.

nah, dont think so.

Rugby League is Rugby 7's. Another rugby is way too similar. I dont think they even play nines now. Would need a lot of work in little time. Flag football at least had world champs by 2002. I can't see one for nines. I also dont think Rugby Union would want League around.

Think Lawn Bowls is the most likely Aussie sport. They will need to work on their appeal to the younger people and get some more federations on ball. Netball would need a mens side of things(strange to say that), but has the advantage of being recognised by the IOC. Put my money on either of those 2 as the "aussie" version of Flag Football.

"Obama called it the world’s biggest tax scam. It’s where A-League owners live"

So it's true, the taxpayers are paying for the A-L !!!!

First glance at Ticketmaster for the Matilda’s game ant Optus Stadium on Sunday 29 October and it seems like a whole heap of seats have just been released on the upper level and that there are thousands of seats available.

However a closer look, and it seems like the seats that have been released are restricted viewing ones that are next to hand rails. And besides from the yellow VIP seats, none are side by side.

So without knowing how the corporate seat sales are going, this might be a larger crowd than the Perth Glory grand final of 56,372. The biggest soccer crowd in WA/Perth Stadium is 58,228 for Manchester United vs Aston Villa in 2022.

It would have been great if they got the rectangle seating in for this event. The next event after the Matilda’s is the Coldplay Concerts, three weeks later for which the grass is not too important.

Some interesting data re: the perpetual 'soccer v football' debate. Soccer just barely achieving a plural majority in the midst of Tillies Mania.

Vince Rugari barely presenting as a journalist as usual. Does he write anything that isn't at the behest of some soccer authority?

What the data shows is that, apart from doing this survey at the most opportune time and then releasing it through a shill masquerading as a journalist, is that the name has been pretty much culturally ceded in NSW and QLD but has far less success below the barassi line. In fact the obnoxious claiming of the name is probably inhibiting the sports growth in Vic / SA and WA

Soccer has scrapped the plan to have a grand final in Sydney, and will revert to the previous system of it being hosted by the highest finishing team. Also they are having a so called “Unite Round” where one round of all ALeague men and women’s matches will be played in Sydney over a weekend

I feel like the opening round of A-League Womens crowds should get mentioned.

A crowd of 11,741 watched Sydney FC beat Western Sydney Wanderers 2-0 at the Sydney Football Stadium, which held five matches at the Women's World Cup.

That surpassed the league record of 9,519 who watched Sydney FC defeat Western United in last season's grand final.

News website is stating that League has decided that PNG will become the 18th NRL team, thanks to the $ that the Australian government is paying for this bid.

I don’t understand why our Australian government does not promote and more widely support Australian Rules - which is the code of football developed in this country and is unique in the world

Minister for International Development and the Pacific Pat Conroy in July announced the federal government has put a $5.5 million package together to boost the PNG development campaign.

Albanese has reportedly indicated privately that his government is prepared to help underwrite a team with up to $25 million a year from the foreign aid budget

I mean they do. That is one example of using AFL directly. Plus grants and all the other stuff outside the world of international relations. There are few cases in which AFL can be used in this sort of diplomacy so directly. I also don't think the AFL cares too much about international diplomacy

PNG is super important, and they love NRL beyond anything else. I am surprised they have taken this step so soon but I am not surprised the Australian government is keen for it to happen.

Madness on behalf of both the NRL and the Australian Government if it is true.

It is quite possible that someone is trying to kill it by leaking it through news limited

I mean they do.

They did, not do.
That is one example of using AFL directly.

That is one example of using AFL indirectly. A trade initiative piggy backing off of Port Adelaide's initiative.

Plus grants and all the other stuff outside the world of international relations.

Like what for example ?

There are few cases in which AFL can be used in this sort of diplomacy so directly.

Huh ? it could be used in any country where there's a trade convention.
Was used in Los Angeles.
London, Dublin, Zagreb, Shanghai, Mumbai would be good.

I also don't think the AFL cares too much about international diplomacy

Neither does FIFA

PNG is super important

To whom ?

and they love NRL beyond anything else.

And they also play a lot Australian Football.
I am surprised they have taken this step so soon but I am not surprised the Australian government is keen for it to happen.

Why, simply because Albanese is pursuing his ego. It cost him the referendum. it will cost him his career.

PNG is extraordinarily important to Australia's geopolitical posture. A PNG allied with China poses an extreme security risk to Northern Australia as well as an easy staging area for Chinese naval task forces to interdict Australian shipping in the event of hostilities.

Australia spends over $500 million per year in development aid to keep PNG friendly and out of China's economic and political orbit. Funding a PNG team in the NRL is a very cheap way to gain an large amount of goodwill from the PNG government and the people as they are mad for the sport.

Given the Australian government seemingly has no plans to declare neutrality or in any way deviate from a pro US position, in fact doubling down with the US alliance with AUKUS, the government will do what it can to support the US position in the Indo-Pacific of containing Chinese influence wherever possible.

Whether everything I've written is truly in Australia's national interest thats a very good question.

Good luck to them.
Even with govt dollars it ain't going to be easy to get a team up and running.
Are Australian clubs actually expected to play games in PNG?
That should be interesting.
Lucky the NRL doesn't have a draft!
This can’t be true. What RL players are going to bring their family over to a dangerous third world country?

Seems like a smart move for the government but a poor move for the NRL. Surely the logistics of a Port Moresby based team will be extremely challenging to say the least. Can't see players wanting to even play away games there, the rascals ain't no joke. The only way I can see this working for the NRL is the gov subsidising the rest of the competition in a big way, in addition to funding the entirety of the PNG team.

It's unfortunate but there just isn't that much scope for AR to be used diplomatically, PNG did specifically ask for a NRL team after all. Alas AFL evangelism will have to be a private endeavour.
Best the AFL can hope for is that this shames the fed into funding a stadium in Hobart.

I think Chinese money for roads trumps a NRL team.

but a poor move for the NRL.

Not really. fences and barbed wire around the pitch is cheap.
It's unfortunate but there just isn't that much scope for AR to be used diplomatically,

There a number of trade missions that have had AFL as there centre piece
There are a number of embassies that do get involved in local AFLs

They used to call these demonstration sports.
Sure were and Australian Football had a demonstration match during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics!Top End Sports.

You would think if the Olympics wanted highlight a local sport it should be Australian Football not one of the pommie games!

Australian Rules Football was one of two demonstration sports at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.
The game was played on December 7th 1956, on Day 14 of the Games.

The other demonstration sport was baseball.

The game was played between a side representing the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA), and a side from the combined Victorian Football League (VFL) and Victorian Football Association (VFA).

As it was part of the Olympic Games, and the ideals of amateurism at that time was so cherished as the Olympic way, only amateur players were allowed to compete. This meant that many players from the mainly professional VFL and VFA were ineligible, so many stars of the game were missing. The VAFA wore white jumpers with emerald green collars and the five Olympic rings on their chest. The combined team wore the reverse coloring, green jumpers with white collars.

The game was played at the MCG, though the ground was smaller than usual as it was played inside of the athletics track. The game was played using the regular Australian Rules Football rules of the day. Surprising many, the VAFA easily won the game 12.9.81 to VFL/VFA 8.7.55.
