Belongs here as it addresses soccer mostly, leading into the Womens World Cup.

Minister Annika Wells seems on top of the funding issues both in detail & more broadly - great to see.

The unprecedented influx of women and girls to the sport that will occur as a result of the Matildas' own "Cathy Freeman" moment means that football below the elite level must be ready to capitalise on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and to ensure Kerr's words do not simply fade into history but, rather, create tangible and long-lasting change.

"I think there has to be a national discussion about what should federal governments fund, what should state governments fund, what should clubs fund, and what should families fund," Ms Wells said.

"Do people want the federal government to invest in local community sporting infrastructure? Or do they want us to give money to sports directly for them to work it out?

"Or do they want us to give money to families or households, almost like a voucher system that currently operates in some state governments, which helps discount the actual cost of playing during a cost-of-living crisis?'

'More than two billion viewers will tune in to this year’s World Cup, and FIFA’s chief women’s football officer, Sarai Bareman, declared it will be the tournament to propel females to gain equal footing with men in earnings.'

I think that figure is pulled out of you know where and I doubt it would be that high with the two largest nations India and China not into soccer all that much.

2 billion as an aggregate may be closer to the mark with many viewers watching multiple matches.
I hate it when major sports like soccer start BSing about crowds.

Even in Australia not one match is at either Marvel or the MCG so are they expecting only 30,000 or less crowds in Melbourne?

Yeah I´m not comparing the two.

But thinking about the NRL itself, it is in a very healthy state and headed in the right direction in every aspect.
Aussie Rules and Rugby League are flying in this country. Historically, when one is up the other is also up. Soccer and Rigby Union are dying.

World Cups aside, we are almost at the point of a duopoly.

There's no almost about it - the two big Winter codes have left the other two in the rear vision mirror, well and truly, and the distance increasing on a daily basis.

Of course, the Swans did the same thing last week. Perhaps this is the beginning of the end of gambling advertising on sports. If you ever followed a little bit of EPL Soccer, you notice how many had random Asian Gambling Companies as their shirt sponsors. Was always a bit iffy and a bad look. In saying that, being banned from the front of shirts, doesn't mean they are banned from the sleeve or advertising hoardings around the ground, so a long long long way to go.

Not every "sporting" organisation is turning away gambling companies. There has been a lot more advertising about DraftKings on WWE television in recent months. But I guess they don't really have to worry about match-fixing.......

Wookie gets pissed when he gets told that AFL is not the sport. He's had some blowups with the famous Twitter account in the past :D:D

I dont get pissed when in get told, I get pissed because it literally doesnt matter in the context of any twitter conversation Im having, and I for one am content on this board to have the AFL and its associated leagues come under the one thread.

Or you can just go and post your wafl crowds on the damn WAFL board. Either way, they dont belong in this thread.

Actually, since Neds were dropped from the Brisbane Lions signage, there isn't any signage sponsorship from gambling companies in the AFL.

The Swans didn't do "the same thing last week". They have been leading on the "reclaim the game" stuff for a few years.

The EPL aren't the "beginning" of anything. They have almost been as bad as the NRL with gambling advertising

Edit: Just re-read this tweet. The commitment is only for the front of the jersey! Haha, yeah that's the same as the Swans, who have committed to not take any gambling money for year, now actively campaigning!

The Swans Announced they were were fully banning gambling companies last week. They might have had a partnership before then, but it was all over their twitter feed last week.

The AFL doesnt have a league wide partnership about a ban of gambling companies on signage or grounds, or I have no knowledge of one. Indeed, when you say they are almost as bad as the NRL, I find that a bit rich considering they both are part of the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports (Compps) and they both feel like no change on gambling adverts is good change. Perhaps the clubs are different, but then, some Victorian AFL Clubs still have pokies....so yeah. Pot, kettle, black.

The EPL have a long long way to go. They are no angels at all. I never claimed otherwise(indeed, I claimed the opposite). But as the biggest league in the biggest code in the world, what they do, even if it minor, makes a big wave elsewhere.

I am saying that the EPL is almost as bad as the NRL.

The AFL is far ahead of both. Not one club has an apparel signage deal with a gambling company or sold venue naming rights to one

The conflation between the Swans and this EPL move is absurd.

you are living in your own AFL world, where you seem to be offended by something minor while ignoring all the AFL ills.

okay. lets go through my original post, one by one.

Of course, the Swans did the same thing last week.
The Swans did the same thing(volunteering ban advertising). ETC, Both banned advertising in some way. It was acknowledging another sport or club doing the same thing(etc BANNING) in the local world

One club mind you.
Perhaps this is the beginning of the end of gambling advertising on sports.
To quote the tweet, the EPL is the first league in the UK to take this step. UK is a big country. Soccer is a big sport. The EPL is the biggest league in the biggest sport.

The EPL is Massive and, outside probably only the NBA, is the biggest league in the Anglo Saxon which has actual whole-world appeal. La Liga and Seira A have already banned advertising to gambling companies. Both have been forced to do so by their governments.

On further reading, it seems the EPL took a step before the government took one for them. Still, a step is a step.
If you ever followed a little bit of EPL Soccer, you notice how many had random Asian Gambling Companies as their shirt sponsors. Was always a bit iffy and a bad look.
Saying that it was a historically bad look. The first gambling company to go on the shirts was in 2003 for the EPL. Now 17 clubs out of the 20 have them as a sponsor in one way or another.
In saying that, being banned from the front of shirts, doesn't mean they are banned from the sleeve or advertising hoardings around the ground, so a long long long way to go.
I laugh at the edit you did on your post. This was on mine from the start(just had to re-word it a bit). It sounded like you found something hidden. This does showcase that it is a small step to the whole thing.

Just One more thing... Your last post..

The Lions are STILL sponsored by NEDS

AFL clubs "earned" $20 Mil in Pokie revenue. Yes only 4 clubs have pokies but pokies are the evil of the evil.

"Multiple gambling insiders who wished to remain anonymous have told Guardian Australia the volume of ads will remain steady despite increasing criticism, as the online wagering industry becomes more competitive and companies jostle for market share.

So, yes, The AFL is far the same as the NRL. As mentioned, they and the NRL team up regarding protecting its gambling dollars. The AFL has an official wagering partner, something the EPL doesn't seem to have. The AFL stance is against the clubs and popular opinion.
And well, this.

Mr McLachlan reiterated his opposition to outlawing gambling advertising in Australia altogether, saying a ban would drive the betting industry “offshore and underground” and make it even tougher to regulate.

He also appeared to walk back comments he made last month in an interview on 3AW Radio about there being “probably too much” gambling advertising associated with the AFL.
Yes, the AFL is so far ahead of the EPL and NRL..................................

Wookie gets pissed when he gets told that AFL is not the sport. He's had some blowups with the famous Twitter account in the past :D:D
There are plenty of threads to talk about how great the AFL is. Trying to have any sort of conversation around other sports is tiresome due to the recalcitrants here needing to pump up their own tyres - not sure why any AFL fan would be fragile, but they are.

Well, this sub-board is on the AFL board, so I would find it strange if anyone is interested in banning the AFL getting a mention on the AFL board!
There are actually specific boards for the other football codes if anyone is truly interested in them.

Given that you can read .... non AFL discussion ..... I for one love Aussie Rules footy, yet dont battle with the concept of this thread. Using its domination of certain parts of Australia to ATTACK other codes might appeal to some, not for the mod here, who enjoys a range of sports local & international, like myself.

Based on other comments here, there is a League board that might suit the argument you are looking for.

It's only NRL fans that get angry and upset about AFL.

No other sports/sporting fans hate it, get triggered by it and spend their time trolling it.

Here its AFL fans angry when they arent in the middle of this thread.
Are NRL fans as precious as that lot?
