Given soccer is the largest sport on Earth, generating the most money across the globe, I always wonder why we aren't able to just leave it to the Arabs and Russians to fund soccer in Australia? Why does the Australian taxpayer need to contribute money to the wealthiest sport on Earth?? Leave it all to the Sheikhs!

No government should invest in anything AFL in this country. They are the richest code in the land, let them fund the new stadium in Tasmania, all the new change rooms for AFLW and its sister leagues.

Its been the the NRL that have been the major beneficiaries of government stadium funding in recent years.

Soccer is the biggest and richest sport in the world. Lets see FIFA pay for anything down here.

Im not a fan of governments doing anything for professional sport, but as long as governments own the facilities they invest in and actively prevent others from building similar venues, they should be the ones paying for them.

The AFL has had its fair share of handouts.

How about AO, Perth Stadium, The Showgrounds, Geelong and Metricon?

Include the Gabba in a couple of years time.
All of those are multi use atadiums as well by other sports. By that measure we could say that cricket has benefited hugely from those stadium upgrades as well and none of those stadium upgrades would go ahead without the AFL.

And wouldnt Soccer and Rugby Union also benefit from funding for NRL stadiums? Do concerts also get played down at Parramatta, for example?

Every sport can claim whatever, if it helps them get money

FIFA only invests when it is politically good for them. And what I mean by "them", I mean the FIFA President and keeping his job. FIFA does sort of invest. We and every FIFA national body would get a little money annually from the corrupt people up top.

I was being sarcastic above. Though I do share a feeling that Governments should help the smaller sports more than the ones who can look(or should) after themselves. Though Soccer and Basketball are smaller than AFL/NRL, I am more thinking of Olympic sports like Hockey, Athletics, and Swimming. !00K for them goes a lot further than 100K for AFL/NRL.

But not just certain codes but, AFLW, W-Legaue(sorry A-Legaue women) and other emerging female sports. If there is anything for the big professional sports, it should be purely for economic reasons.

Well the good news for those smaller sports is they aren't getting $100k... they're getting $100m per year, just for high performance programs from the federal government.

While AFL, NRL and cricket get nothing from the same scheme.

So what about the Storm at AMMI last night that had only 16,000 when there was NO AFL matches on in Melbourne = it is not much different than they had in their early years!

I does seem that 14 -16000 is about their support in Melbourne.

If the Swans were to ave 15 000 at the SCG the heavily based RL Sydney media would be all over it predicting the demise of Australian Football in Sincity.
That’s 50% higher than their base crowds 10-20 years ago. Do success and improved stadium facilities working hand in hand to build its supporter base over time.

100% correct plus all the concerts and events held at the upgraded facilities.

... the IPL is the second richest TV sport product in the world, second only to the NFL. The IPL lasts two months and has zero cut through outside of India and a few other countries. None of the teams have any value globally.

I didnt need that information - but the combined revenue from soccer would dwarf the IPL

Has anyone got access to the recent Mike Baird interview with Sydney Morning herald?

Baird has been appointed chairman of Cricket Australia. Apparently in the interview Baird made direct comparison to the AFL in terms of the
"Which sport is more poopular" battle.

Mike Baird in The Age

This is all it says about the AFL:

In singling out the AFL, Baird highlighted how far cricket had fallen behind the most successful sporting governing body in the country.

After more or less matching the AFL with television deals over the past couple of decades, cricket and every other sport was blown out of the water by the $4.5 billion television deal over seven years signed in September with Channel Seven and Fox.
By contrast, Cricket Australia managed an incremental increase, securing $1.5 billion with the same partners as the AFL over the same period.
Despite the flat TV deal, Baird believes cricket has significant revenue opportunities to invest in attracting new generations to the sport.
“I think we’ve massively underplayed merchandise and the opportunities with merchandise, digital opportunities, growing the game, there’s advertising revenue as part of the broadcast deal,” he said.
“We’re considering fan-experience opportunities, which connect into that digital space. There’s also broader questions of opportunities with other leagues.”

Was that the point of the article, no.
Relevant to the sports industry, yes.

On soccer, its always good to see local talent make good on the international stage:

Tottenham set to appoint Scott Munn as chief football officer

Tottenham Hotspur are set to appoint Scott Munn as chief football officer.

The Australian is currently chief executive of City Football Group China, having previously held the same position at Melbourne City FC.

A move to the Premier League club would be his first role in European football, with his remit also taking in the club’s academy and women’s team.
