Got a good feeling about Murdoch , looks a likely type :thumbsu:

Also something about Clohesy - looks an old fashioned hard at it footballer with that haircut , maybe he'll surprise ?
Clohesy is a very good player. He needs to build strength through his core first. 👍

And I say that after watching a lot of Falcons games ... Finds the footy, uses it well but doesn't have the strength at stoppages at the moment. He gets pushed off the ball a little easily.

Has a lot of footy smarts, runs both ways and attacks it with ferocity.

He'll probably start as a HF.

He looks to have a good frame Jack The Godfather - hopefully will be able to put on some muscle and use that extra weight and strength to advantage.

Put it this way he's worth the punt. I've been big on him for a while. If he fixes his weakness he'll be a good player.

Hopefully Conway can get his body right, foot injuries in young big men do scare me.
Small silver lining is that it opens up more room for Neale to play if Stanley is unavailable. Blicavs can shoulder more of the ruck in that scenario.
Ideally would leave Neale to develop as a key forward but would be good to get some ruck experience, we’ve seen what Hawkins can do as ruck in the F50.
The more games we can get him this year the better! Need to get that signature

Conways injury makes Neales signature 2x more important.

It does although neale was important anyway as the key forward successor to hawkins as good kpfs are hard and expensive to get.

By contrast its not as hard to trade in decent ish rucks if you need one

Whilst the news of Conway being injured sucks... It really shouldn't have much impact on our ability to go B2B.

Certainly was looking forward to seeing him though.

Agree it was always gonna be stanley/blitz/cegs for 2023 then conway (plus whatever ruck we trade in) for 2024/5 once stanley and cegs retired so it doesnt really impact this year. Long term injuries in big guys do worry me though so hopefully he's good on that front.

Agreed. Even if nobody was expecting Toby to break out as a senior player this year, this setback is still quite costly for his development. He's had really limited footy with us since arriving, and is now going to miss a chunk of preseason plus half of 2023 as well.

It puts him behind the eight-ball to be ready to take on the #1 ruck mantle for 2024 as well. which was certainly my hope for his progression over the next twelve months. So just because he wasn't expected to be playing much in the ones this season doesn't mean this isn't a significant setback for both him and the club's list profile in the ruck.

Really hope they're massively cautious with building him up from here, to give him the best chance of eventually delivering on the undoubted potential he possesses to be a quality ruck down the track.

Players of Toby's size often have injury problems early. Their bodies are still maturing and generally they reach their physical maturity later than smaller players. I would normally expect them to reach their peak a couple of years later than others. We need to be patient.

All this Toby news is even more reason why we're likely going so hard when it comes to TDK. It'll be the biggest hole on our list, and Carlton won't give TDK the ruck time he wants, so we'll be able to offer lifestyle, a clear role as No. 1 ruck, and of course being able to play with his brother.

Our 2024 side then looks pretty damn strong, even with a buch of retirements:

B: Bews, SDK, J. Henry
HB: Stewart, Kolo, Z. Guthrie
C: Holmes, Blics, Bowes
FO: TDK, Danger, Guthrie
HF: O. Henry, J. Cameron, Miers
F: Stengle, S. Neale, Close
INT: Duncan, T. Atkins, Bruhn, Parfitt
Sub: O'Connor

EMG: Ceglar, J. Clark, Mullin

Likely to be Traded/Delisted/Retire:

Hawkins, Stanley, Menegola, Ratugolea, Rohan, Tuohy, I. Smith

It would be nice if Conway could have smooth uninterrupted career but he really is a long term investment for us.

Look at any of the current top rucks in the comp and look at when they really started to deliver as #1 ruckman.

Gawn... year 6
Grundy... year 5
Goldy... year 5

To think Conway will be taking the mantle as #1 ruck and be delivering the goods next year in year 3 is unrealistic... even without any setbacks.

P.S TDK is coming into year 6 this season.

Agree... the timing and all the other things just fit when putting it all together.

TDK could have a nice little improvement year this season playing 2nd ruck and then be ready to unleash as the top dog in year 7... hopefully with us.

That's all fine. But it is also true that each one of those rucks was playing double-digit games in the ones (which makes you a relatively entrenched senior player) by year 3 on the senior list. Given this setback, that will be much harder for Toby now.

I think they will be super cautious. They know the talent they have and his game maturity in some way is way ahead of his age - so only part of the jigsaw left is his body and related conditioning. We might not see him until second half as they build up a training block for him

shame as he was one of my reasons of excitement for vfl this year - although I still have a number of favourites still to watch!

Correct, they were playing games.

As much as I want Conway playing and developing as fast as possible, I gotta be realistic that he is going to be a long term investment and as stupid as it sounds now... hopefully he is carving it up and well into his prime in 8 years... That's how long I'm talking (hopefully it's much faster than that though).

All this just makes TDK look a very likely option for us for next year as Conway develops and Stanley/Ceglar start to look towards hanging them up.

I say this assuming that Neale is being looked at as more of a key forward and Sav as a key back.

We absolutely need to get a decent middle age ruckman on our list one way or another.

Celgar as a stop gate for this year with a view to hopefully getting TDK next year
