Training 2023 Pre Season

Just a quick report today from today; same professional intensity to what I saw pre xmas with excellent organisation and really attentive coaching. All the coaching usual suspects were out there and Kosi on the sidelines watching on. They clearly plan and prepare really well for these sessions. Like others have noted quite a big difference between now and the Ratten era which to me was always a bit too casual. Stuff which I seemed to notice;

  • Coffield participated in some early non contact drills looking powerful and quick and explosive. I was actually surprised at how strong overall he looked, big man.
  • Enright is brilliant the way he plays and coaches. Still moves so well.
  • Liked the look of Peris. Kicked a goal and was generally involved and useful. Was up front in the conditioning drills at the end just behind Windy (of course).
  • Early on Hayes limped off. Couldn't guess what the injury was. Didn't see him again but others have seen him in a moon boot. Kept waiting for him to come back out but knew he wouldn't. His body language looked down walking slowly into the building after he did whatever he did. Was pretty disappointing.
  • Owens just breaks through tackles using his power. Very strong in the air playing forward in the drills. He might be hard to match up on, just so impressive. No doubt he'll be in the forward line round one.
  • Others who impressed; Marshall, Mattaes, Higgins, Wood, Wilkie - everyone was looking pretty good to be honest. Love watching Wanga-Milly and quite like him in the backline.
  • I thought Cordy was ok in the running sessions at the end. My guess is he's improving. Walsh really puts them through their paces with running drills back and forth with intervals, and then two third lap of the oval - all on repeat. Quite brutal. They look incredibly fit. Cordy has a funny Jack Steven running wiggle about him. But I didn't notice him much in the simulation work.
  • To me Howard trained well and looks bigger than last year. Van Es managed some nice things and is plenty big, runs good. Heath getting a bit of muscle on him now, will be interesting to see if he gets used this year. I would think next year.
  • I still find it hard to rate Allison, looked a little uncouth to me in marking contests. Just can't see it. Hope I'm wrong. Watched a bit of him in VFL.
  • Good to see Jones out there, looks in good shape. Maxxy running loose laps, not many. No Clark.

The guys are working really hard and very vocal. They earned their money today.

My not so in depth report:

I'd be shocked if Phillipou didn't debut round 1. He looks ready made.

Wood in the midfield group for parts. Looked decent.

Coff while he wasn't involved a whole lot. The size of him. Jeeeeeeesus.

Was impressed with Rowan. Covered the ground well in the Match Sim

The boy must have hit the post 100 times.

That's all I really noticed. I'm not very observant but the usual things we've heard is true. Very vocal. Lenny, BJ and Harvs controlling the training while RTB was more casual. Went to one session last year and the professionalism is up tenfold.

It's a process, and you can't take a whole lot out of training but we are on the right track.

Grew up a Saints fan. Everyone thinks that one day a player will take romance over dollars and join us to fulfil their childhood dream. Perhaps he's the one.
He can arrive with Ben King at the end of the year.
And them Tom's brother can come over from Geelong when his current Contract is up.
Then the teams spine is sorted for the next 10 plus years simples

As is our salary cap

Sounds like Roma is set for a big year. The last time he had the no.1 ruck role he came 2nd in the B&F, at just 23yo, and was one of the top 5 or so in the comp in that role, but since then he’s played mostly forward- where he’s nowhere near as good- and on top of that played injured for all of his games in 2021, and seemed to still be hampered throughout last season as well.

If he’s back to full-fitness and relatively injury-free this year he could have a huge year, in what is by far his preferred role.

Loving the training reports as per usual. s**t sounding news about Hayes though.

Those backup rucking stocks are getting mighty mighty thin. Might need to give Paddy a call. He didn’t want to retire anyway.

We have Campbell and Marshall, two rucks who are probably better than Billy Longer ever was.

unless its very serious, hayes was not going to be there round 1. it was more likely rounds 4-5 that would be 12 months.
That 12 month thing is far from set in stone. If he was in full training already he would have almost certainly been available for R1 had he not had any setbacks.

Interestingly , while we picked up Essendon's cast off, Eyre, they have this guy training with them.

Training was not all a bed of roses..with quick ball movement, quality foot and hand skills are required.
Too many sloppy kicks today, something that has been a common theme for many years!
On the plus side, youngsters Windhager, Owens, NWM & Phillipou were impressive, with Owens clunking a couple of big grabs up forward plus his strength & second efforts noticeable.
Windhager’s running power tremendous, linking up beautifully with teammates…his kicking was generally good.
Such a shame about Jack Hayes, sometimes there’s no justice in sport.

If everyone puts him on ignore….he’ll be talking to himself
