Match Sim
It seems Fyfe had some confronting situations last season. Hopefully he can adjust and have a reasonable season in 2023.

From the outside we think players are just dealing with a physical injury and don't really appreciate how difficult it can be for them mentally, a revealing interview.

Yep for sure

I just wanted to let you know that those highlights didn't show the whole story

Like I've previously mentioned our 1st half was sublime. Intensity plus skill execution was as good as I've seen since 2012 match sims.

I did notice one poor handball from Brodie to another mids feet and one turn over kick inside 50 from Young. Having said that both were terrific for the rest of the game. Our second half did drop in intensity.

The players decision making was top shelf and their fitness could improve a little with 5 weeks out.
I assume we’ve been working hard this off season on our slow starts so this is a great sign. Fading a bit in Feb during summer won’t be an issue when the real season starts and if we’re 10 goals up at half time.

Fielding two full teams with a couple of top ups from peel to replace our guys in recovery probably means there wasn’t a lot of bench time either.
For the training watchers. Do they take a full half hour for the half time break?

When has the AFL taken a half an hour break before?

It felt as if they took the standard times between quarters

I think we should expect Fyfe to start forward in the quarters and feature in some explosive clearances out of the bounce, particularly if there has been a run against.

Five or six clearances a game, 20 touches and two goals. That's votes.

Firstly, much kudos to democritus, KH et al for their training reports from Sat. Super stuff. I got to the game at half time and enjoyed having a look but didn't get back to a PC for the rest of the weekend. When I did I saw the reports had been handled much more than adequately and enjoyed reading those immensely, thanks so much.

There's very little to add but a couple of things myself and my mate noticed that are worth raising as they go to a few things that have piqued interest over the PS and late last year.

They both relate to our forward connection and ball movement and, to me, were positives, but to some might be a cause of irritation throughout the year.

I totally agree on the views posted about Henry's game. He was up and down the ground, getting a lot of the ball and was very effective. It was really great to see. However, as we got there at the half, we didn't see the first half he put out there and it was really pleasing to read how good his disposal was in the first half I wasn't there to see because he started shakily in the 2nd half. We saw his first 5 possessions in the second half and 4 of them were direct turnovers marked from his kicks. 2 badly executed kicks and 2 good defensive cut-off efforts.

The reason I saw this as positive is that he was getting a lot of the ball and even the best ball users turn it over because they often aim for things others don't. I'd rather see Henry keep doing this for us than taking soft options. The fact he had 2 poor kicks but kept on going for tough options to move the ball quickly or to dangerous spots I saw as a real positive. He's probably being told to keep backing himself which is good coaching. The fact he's doing that even after some rough outcomes means he's listening and keeping his confidence. So I think that's a positive.

Those who don't rate him will jump on him these turnovers and get negative about it, that's life in the spotlight and it's hard to argue that turnovers suck. For me though, I want him to keep going and keep backing himself because he'll be a weapon as experience and development reduces his turnovers.

I mention Walker in this vein as well. He had a couple of bad turnovers and got caught once when taking someone on. I think the same thing applies here. He's not the same weapon with his skills Henry will be but he's quicker and more damaging with his run so is a different type of weapon. He should be encouraged to keep going and not killed for when it doesn't come off.

The other positive from these turnovers was that none of them resulted in a goal as far as I remember even though they occurred mostly on the wing or defensive side of the wing. That's some good defensive adjustment work.

The other element I really liked has been mentioned a bit and really stood out to me. It's how aggressive we looked with the ball movement and the impact it had. The best example of this to me was an early play I saw in the outer pocket at the carpark end involving Ethan Hughes. He intercepted a Fyfe pass from deep in the pocket that was coming back out to the flank. Fyfe was under pressure and looking to pass out to a teammate. When Hughes took the ball, he didn't stop, take his time, settle things down etc. He took off across the ground and got the ball moving almost immediately and floated one up off his left foot. Hughes took the intercept in the defensive 50 with a fair number of players around him. Now Ethan is usually pretty slow with the ball as many have noticed. This was a time where being slow would be understandable rather than infuriating. Instead he took off and he took off across the ground. The ball moved then quickly and, importantly, his teammates were ready for it - so to me it seems like a plan for us. Be bold, be quick etc.

This wasn't the only example. Later on Henry took an open mark at high half forward with a defender pushing hard to get to him and slow the play. Instead of marking and letting the defender come past him on to the mark, he took off. It put him under pressure a bit but it kept the ball moving and made us much more dangerous. Walker, Johnson, JOM, Ras and Fyfe all did similar things in situations where it would have been understandable to take the ball and assess options. It'll cause some angst and some turnovers this year but it'll get us some goals too. We also slow played the ball at times too so it's not go at all costs but seemed to be the main thrust of the game. I really liked it.

The last thing I'll mention is I read a bit in the media coverage (thanks to Dale) about Fyfe being held goalless as though he'd had little impact. Yes he was goalless but he had an impact up forward for sure. He should have had one after Johnno got the ball on the outer wing in the open and streamed forward. Fyfe was one out leading his defender back to the goal. When Johnno got the ball Fyfe was around the edge of the centre square heading back towards an open 50. Johnno rightly held on to the ball and ran hard forward because he had room too and he gave Fyfe time to get closer to goal. However, he should have pulled the trigger twice to get it to Fyfe for an easy shot on goal but ended up holding it too long. Eventually he hit Tabs who had also come back in to the 50 by then but he hit him where Tabs was kicking from about 40, and he missed the set shot. Johnno was dirty on himself for that so I doubt we see it often again from him. Fyfe was great about it. As Tabs was setting up he called out to Johnno and gave his the thumbs up.

On another occasion, Fyfe had out-positioned his man (Ryan both times) and then led straight up the middle of the ground with nothing in front of him. Instead of passing to him, Banfield went wide to a really bad option and an option he didn't even hit with the pass so the ball went out of bounds. Had he hit Fyfe it would have been a shot on goal from about 30m in front. That's the life of a forward but Fyfe had twice been denied in only the half of footy I saw. I'd suggest if these happened when it's B22 v B22 in a real game he gets the ball both times.

Enjoy the rest of the PS folks and thanks again for the great reads from those who posted earlier about the game.

If highlights told a fair spread of the day then Sam Sturt could finally be breaking out into the AFL.

How's Fyfe's preseason been? If he's had a good preseason and tracking well to start guns blazing, then $15 for most Freo votes is amazing value... Thoughts?
Fyfe's not getting most votes for Freo this year. You're better off giving the money to me. I'll PM you my bank details.

If he could live up to his potential, that would be awesome

It sure would. He was pretty good in the bits I saw on the weekend. He kicked a goal, laid some good tackles, moved up the ground a lot and was noticeable in applying pressure. He used it well when he got it. He did hurt his ankle at one point but came back out so no big deal.

On exposed form in the PS, he's unlikely to play Rd1 I'm guessing but if a Schultz, Fyfe, Freddy type goes down, he'd be first one up now I'm guessing. I know some are worried (and others hopeful) that Banfield gets picked B22 or is the first one in for an injury/suspension. I don't see it that way. He may be if they want more flexibility, but if it's a forward they pick, it really looks like Sturt to me right now. Emmett was making a big push for it before getting hurt too.

Banfield is ideal for the sub so he may play because of that but to me there are a lot of outs before he touches B22 for the week. He played on the wing for a lot of Q3 and 4 on the weekend which strengthens the sub case for him. I'd rotate Johhno, Ras and him through that spot but we'll see.

Cheers, mate.

I'll steer clear.

Sensible approach from me where I asked for some feedback & advice to identify if it was value. Clearly it's not value so I'll keep my money :thumbsu:
