He looks like a forward pocket specialist. šŸ˜‰

There was some very good defenders around that contest in Cox, Ryan, Hamling, Young & others which is a bit disappointing from a defensive aspect, but the very best players are always thinking ā€˜how do I impact the NEXT contestā€™ & are always one step ahead with their thinking & running patterns to impact or set up in the right spot.

That goal, whether going at full power or not, is the thing I've thought might be the biggest bonus of Fyfe up front. His history is littered with nice goals on the run and snaps from stoppages or spilt ball where he has converted really well. It's not an area we've been particularly strong in with the current crop of smalls being more pressure than potent. Fyfe could well impact that. Ironically given his aerial strength, it is his ground work which might be the bigger bonus. Then again...why not both?

Cox's urgency has been a constant irritant for me. He plays with so little of it and it's particularly frustrating at moments like that in actual games. However, I have to remind myself that this lack of urgency is also a lack of panic in the other situations where he takes the important mark or doesn't get sucked in to a contest he shouldn't etc so the benefits outweigh the negatives. It just looks so bad when he's caught out due to it.

Probably not the case in this situation given his easing back in to training loads etc but it's something I have to steel myself for to make it through the season as a spectator.

That's a good point, Connor Blakely played with a frantic urgency and created problems with it.

Am I too cynical in thinking there would be more defensive pressure in a normal AFL game. Or should I just enjoy the Nat Fyfe moment?

Cool your jets bro

In a couple of weeks the realists will be allowed back in the bunker

Donā€™t pop everyoneā€™s helium balloons by telling them itā€™s WAFL+ level at best

If you watch that replay closely, Youngie would have spoiled or at least got some sort of body on just before Fyfe took the snap. Yes, I am a bastard.

Coxy is going to be a very good player for us, but he should not have made the All Australian squad last year. Definitely needs more defensive urgency and desperation in his game.

Agree....he makes cox look like an old man trying to pick up the ball - Fyfe has already done so and is kicking on goal!

My guess is that some players get told to hold back at times during pre-season and just get the run in the legs.

Last week's video when Benning marked and goaled, he had a bit of a break on Pearce, but Pearce just sagged off on the lead. In a real game he'd dig the boots into the grass and close the gap to pressure the mark.

Its training run defending, but at least the vision shows that there's a bit of flexibility there. Fyfe could hardly bend over in the game time he had last season.
Itā€™s not a big deal, but training run defending is when thereā€™s a token 3 defenders to a structured forward movement drill involving 6 others.
That contest was 1v1 & Young went to completely the wrong area looking to spread from the contest. Defensive pressure practice is just as important as forward structure play & your not going to put all those defenders in the back half & say go easy.
The point of the OP was more about Fyfes positioning & thought process despite there being some good defenders around.

I just re-watched THAT 2nd half against Melbourne at the MCG last year, Round 11. Narrm** I think there were for the Sir Doug Nicholls round.

Thing that got me pumpin' with excitement was the excitement of the Freo faithful that day; watching the boys turn it around in the 3rd quarter with an astonishing 8 goal performance. And not forgetting Freddy's nuts backhander, ridiculously good.....man, so electric! We just came from nowhere that day to pull a rabbit out the hat......proper magic! Our fans: giving it their all, the Dees fans off sooking in a corner whilst we were ringing out the Freo chant! Just beautiful.

I hope this year, there's another Freo chant ringing out loud and proud at the G, come Grand Final day.

Very excited now for season 2023 to get underway.........let's be 'avin ya!!

EDIT** it was Narrm, my bad
I was at that game. I filmed the supporters leaving. Such sad scenes. Ruined their season.

Guy behind me kept saying how Freddie was useless. Screamed throw when he set up Schultz. So bloody negative, bloody victorians

I agree. The only thing really that I might see as going easy is Cox, maybe off balance, just reaching out with one hand, and given one of his hands was injured, you might not expect much more from him at this point in his return to training.

But also generally, when you see match sim training videos you don't know what point in the match sim it is. Like the other example I gave with Pearce and Benning last week, maybe the coaching instruction comes out to the player to look after himself at some point, to stay out there and get the game time but not to go flat out anymore and risk injury.

Its just a guess.

The thing I focussed on and liked was the Fyfe finish and how its something he's shown previously and could show a lot more of as a permanent forward. I don't think anyone doubts Fyfe can win his own ground ball at AFL level. My pont was he may provide to be just as dangerous on the ground around goals as we expected him to be in the air.

How hard the defenders were going in that drill is irrelevant because we know Fyfe can beat anyone at ground level. The finish was key to me from that example.
