VFL 2023 Sandringham Zebras

Well after watching Sandringham the past two weeks I think our list build is years away from evolving.

Paton had a very good game. Bytel got first use but he simply doesnt hurt teams with his ball use. Heath, Campbell and Peris have a crack each week.

Connolly got a bit of it and I thought he was progressing but he has a lot of work to do if he wants to remain on the list next year.

Van Es, Adams, Keeler are all young talls and are work in progress. Again today they all wanted to play bruise free football and that needs to be corrected and quickly. Van Es was meant to be a physical beast, well atm he is playing like bambi.

The other Saints listed players played as you would expect nothing out of the ordinary. As a collective group the Saints and the Sandringham players would be the worst skilled and lowest footballing IQ side in the VFL.

On top of that they were very poorly coached by Batchelor again today. He simply doesnt pull the right levers to give the group the best opportunities. All round the Sandringham/St Kilda alignment make for a shocking VFL combination, something has to change and quickly.

I watched some of the first half. We looked like we wanted to play footy for perfect conditions. There is plenty of promising talent but lots have just started. We have really poor depth through the midfield at both levels.

Was so dumb football iq. Trying to bite off kicks against a howling wind was bizarre. Local ammos would know better

It's almost like the coach told the team to go out and play dumb footy. Jeez, I hope we don't get too many injuries to the seniors.
Writes good reviews though.

I was very impressed with Bytel this week. I told him to play dumb footy, and he did a good job of kicking it to his opponents more than his team mates.
Connelly made sure that he got to the right places to make him completely useless as a ball carrier.

Overall i'm very impressed with the team's ability of following my completely non-sensical instructions.

I watched a few bits and pieces and liked what I saw of Van Es, Peris and Keeler.

The side lacks experience and leadership. With DMac and Jones in next week they'll be a truckload better. They'd love an experienced key forward aswell, they should target a quality VFL full forward as there's too much left to our young guys who just aren't good enough yet.

I thought the same, no "generals". Seemed like Heath was the only one who showed the way.

Anyone remember Connolly playing some senior games under Richo? He looked very promising and showed good footskils, yet he seems to have gone nowhere after that. Is it a club developmental issue, or just Leo didn't grab the opportunity.? Or a bit of both.

I feel the same way about him as I felt about Sinclair when he couldn’t quite crack a spot.

He just has a certain “something”.

I reckon hbf is his spot at AFL level in much the same way as a Whitfield plays.

We control everything on field as it is. Wouldn’t make much difference what the team is called .
We all know we support a poorly financed football club, but this affiliation is and always has been a disaster for AFL player development. I can't understand how most of the other affiliated teams consistently attract decent players, but Sandringham apart from a few like a Milne, Lowe, Gown and Hipwell are rubbish. Then you add the Saints lack of talent, depth and leadership and the place is a cesspit of under achievement.

The club are sadly mistaken if they believe they can expect our youngsters to develop in that environment, it just won't happen. They will keep having to turn over kids and not getting them to a decent level like they have for the past 20 years. They will continue to get completely no value for their investment in these kids, it's just really poor management IMO. The club/s need to invest in bringing in some mature talent to put around our kids or dump the affiliation all together.

I haven't watched this game - I might. But you have to remember that a lot of the way Batch will be playing us in the 2nds is to develop the afl listed players - eg: Connolly on ball to get better in the inside mid role, earlier trying to make Bytel play outside mid. I wouldn't be surprised if Batch said I know the wind is howling, but I want you to try and play our way. Whether this will be better / worse for our kids development- I don't know

Mayo much , Too small , too light and can hardly take an overhead mark

Need to remember the teams missing Coffield, Billing’s, Hayes, Zak Jones, Allison, Clark and McKenzie. Those guys play and you have a much more competitive team.
