I do like the "health is wealth" line

So key points are;

  • Pitto back in full training.
  • Doc is now a midfielder barring a swag of defensive injuries.
  • Matty K still a bit off, Jack Martin being managed and Lewis Young back into training next week.
  • Sam Walsh has gone from doing laps at 2/3 pace last week to 1/2 pace this week. I blame Andrew Russell.

Mitch McGovern is one of our keys, his ability to zone off, mark, play on and kick the ball to 60 metres away so that it gets there quickly before drfences can set up is unparalleled. Unfortunately so is his ability to ping a hammy.

We seem to be in pretty good nick, fingers crossed that it stays that way.

With Doc playing mid Cowan might not be far off a round 1 berth. Weiters, Williams, Saad, Young, Newman, McGovern are locks. 7th spot up for grabs between Marchbank, Cowan and Plowman. They are all different types so might come down to balance moreso then best player.

If Doc plays mid I think that reduces the chances of Carroll playing early. Cripps, Docherty, Hewett and Cerra the locks plus Kennedy if we go with 5. We wont play 6 mids or push any of those out to a wing given Voss clearly sees it as a specialist role. Carroll probably needs to push Kennedy out to get a game (barring injury)

'Voss finally has some magnets to play with.' Not really sure about that compared to last year, but I'm sure that's what he was saying to all and sundry.

As for Pittonet getting a run, reads like he was just taking ruck duels without getting off the ground, but it begs the question: where is Mirkov and why wasn't he fit to play for 60 minutes when the other option isn't in full contact training for another month due to a knee issue?

What happened to his hair?
That's not him in the display pic, not exactly sure who it is.

Looks like Cunnington who has gone through Chemo to me.

Cowan is the one.

Perhaps, but

Gov Weitering Newman
Williams Young Saad

7th defender from Marchbank, Plowman, Durdin, Cowan, Boyd when fit

Mids and HFs

Cripps, Kennedy, Walsh, Hewett, Doc, Carroll, Kemp, Dow, Cuners, Fisher

Even if we have extended injuries in the backline, Voss will shuffle magnets, Hewett, Doc or Kemp could play back

Cowan might get a gig at some stage this year, same with Hollands, Binns, Lemmey, just don't think it will be early

Unless we have a bucket load of injuries, don't think any of Hollands, Binns, Cowan, Lemmey will play early

I reckon the first 3 are a shot. Vossy has made it clear that players are competing for specific roles and those 3 play positions we have less depth in.

Based on history we play at least 2 specialist wingers every week. Acres is a lock for one but Hollands and Binns probably only have to compete with Obrien for the other (given Cotters injury).

With Docherty playing midfield Cowan is only competing with plowman and marchbank for the 7th defender spot so also not far off provided he is good enough.

Cowan won't start ahead of Marchbank or Plow early on

Think Binns and Hollands are more of a chance, but Acres, LOB and I believe Cotts will be right for round 1. Cerra can also play on a wing, Carroll comes into the guts

You forgot Docherty

Forgotten in the mids too
A bit of a discussion about Doch as a mid in the best 22 thread I think...

I like seeing more (serious) options for midfield time available to Voss - Doch ticks a few boxes and adds proper depth/coverage.

So if we're thinking critically about it, the names we're missing for round 1 are probably Walsh, and to a lesser extent potentially Cuningham and Boyd.

Time to sit back and see how much that gets blown out by the start of March...

Nervous times ahead for sure with so many of the perenially injured - but important players in a perfect world.

Voss copped a raw deal last year.

If Cowan and Saad kick to each other we’ll have a Moo and a Woof in the same play.
