Lyons’ year to remember continues with Brisbane’s VFL top gong

Jarryd Lyons has added to his trophy cabinet again in 2023 taking home the Neville Fallon Brisbane Lions Reserves Best & Fairest Award.

After being announced as the winner of the VFL’s top honour, the J.J Liston Trophy two weeks ago, Lyons capped off a stellar year in the VFL at the 2023 Club Champion Dinner last night.

VFL Coach Ben Hudson was full of praise for Lyons, who brought a wealth of experience to a young side.

“He’s been fantastic for us all year, not just on field but off it as well,” he said.

“JL (Lyons) is someone who pushes the standards of the group week in and week out, while also leading by his actions on game day.

“He’s been integral member of our VFL squad this season and it showed during the AFL Finals Series with his impact as the substitute late in games.”

Lyons dominated in a stacked Lions midfield during the 2023 VFL Season averaging 31.4 disposals in 16 appearances along with being one of the premier clearance winners throughout the competition.

He continued to rack up impressive stats including collecting 30 or more possessions 13 times and 40 or more on three occasions.

Lyons best performance came against Coburg in round nine which saw the Lions travel to Melbourne.

Brisbane piled on 24 goals while Lyons was at his damaging best collecting 44 touches, nine marks, 10 clearances and a goal to claim best on ground honours.

Is the depth of Lions AFL listed players here an issue considering 3 top up players finished in top 10 of B&F?

It crossed my mind, but I think it's more to do with who played the most games, much like the seniors' B&F. The top 11 in games played (9-11 played the same number) tracks pretty similarly:
  • White - 21
  • Coleman - 20
  • Cockatoo - 20 - 6th
  • Abberley - 20 - 7th
  • Buzza - 20 - 2nd
  • Tunstill - 19 - 3rd
  • Dunkley - 19 - 9th
  • Lane - 19
  • Sharp - 18 - 3rd
  • Brain - 18
  • Prior - 18 - 3rd
Pretty clear Coleman is in trouble, whereas White (late starter), Lane (ruck) and Brain (position switch part way through the year) all have excuses to give them more leeway. If fringe guys didn't get injured or shuffled between the two, we'd likely see them up there too.

Resorting to made-up stats, it looks like about 2 votes per game is what we'd expect from fringe best 22/depth (Prior, Sharp, Tunstill, Matho - I'd be curious if Smith was around the 29-30 vote mark too), and about 1.5-1.75 votes per game from VFL standard players (Dunkley, Abberley). Using that metric, Cockatoo and Fullarton only performed to VFL standard while Buzza overperformed.

What was voting system? For it to be so close and spread it seems like it was not a standard 3-2-1 type scenario?

Everyone gets a rating per game, they changed it this year so I don't know what out of but I'd guess 0-5 or something with the coaches being hard markers.

Thoughts on Fullerton being let go and the mess with Jack Gunston?

Tom was a tease really. Seemed to have some really strong attributes. a mixture of height and clean ball handling below the knees but just couldn’t put it all together. Seemed to lack confidence in his ability at key moments.

i May be wrong but I think his best form in the VFL this year was when Gunston decided to drop himself. In any event the coaching group decided not to try Fullerton in place of Gunston, so we will not know if Tom would have grabbed that chance. i Will be interested to see what Tom makes of his opportunities at the Dees.

Gunston was a low risk recruitment, that really work. Will be missed in the VFL providing on field advice to younger guys if he leaves.

I guess Tom succeeding at the Dees has about the same chance of success as Gunston 2023 recruitment working.

Would have been really messy had Lohman gone. Can’t see Fullarton making a difference at Melbourne but good luck to him for at least going somewhere he may get more opportunities

bit of lifestyle choice in there as well. if you are going to play B grade, do it in Melbourne for a couple of years, and live the full AFL life.

Hearing B.Coleman and White gone, and Abberley to get an opportunity. Not sure thats the angle I'd take, surely someone like Bianco from Collingwood would be a better option than a VFL plodder.
I think plodder is harsh. I’ve always rated Abberley as one of our better VFL performers over the past few years. Good reward for his consistency and effort at the club. I’ve wondered at times whether he has the potential to move onto the AFL list but ultimately I didn’t think he had enough “weapons” but if he lands a spot I’ll back him in. I’m hoping we also elevate Bruce Reville who hasn’t maybe been quite as consistent as Abberley but from my point of view has more AFL traits.
