Hearing B.Coleman and White gone, and Abberley to get an opportunity. Not sure thats the angle I'd take, surely someone like Bianco from Collingwood would be a better option than a VFL plodder.
Abberley is no plodder. I like the move. Excellent news if true. Give some of the upgraded VFL guys an opportunity.
It shows there's a pathway to achieve one's dream of playing AFL.
Abberley is an academy kid as well.

Having watched a fair bit of reserves footy I am a tad surprised that Tahj Abberley would be someone we would consider signing on, he does not play in a position of need for us and has no standout traits IMO.

Would prefer Bruce Reville be given a shot.

Whilst injury interrupted this year, I think Riley Greene has traits best transferable to AFL.

responses interesting, because I think my mail is incorrect and its actually Reville (not Abberley) that is going to be elevated onto the Rookie list.

As a long time watcher of QAFL footy, I think this is great as he is a genuine product of the local competition and most definitely has AFL traits.

I was big on Greene last pre-season, but kid just needs to get on the park before the Lions worry about listing him.

Makes more sense if we are getting rid of both White and Coleman.

If anyone has personally laid on eyes on Coleman lately, it would appear he isn't interested in pursuing an AFL career.

I think Lions haven’t given Blake much opportunity up field or off half back like his brother. Played heaps of good junior and rep footy coming through at CHB and on a wing. Never seen he given that opportunity. No doubt his fitness levels and desire have been questioned at AFL Level but not sure he has been given right opportunity positional wise for mine.

Think he got loads more talent and footy ability than Abberley, Reville , Greene etc so can’t see any advantages in delisting him for one of those lads.

But Reville did train right through finals series with Lions group so there may be some truths in that rumour of him being upgraded onto list.

You do have a slight Morningside bias though, no?

Do you mean HBF? Cause he's never going to be a CHB. I can't claim to watched a heap of the ressies, but I swore I've seen him in centre bounces on occasion.

I think largely talent gets you on an AFL list, what opportunities you get are proportional to what you put in. That is, you don't get rewarded until there's something to reward. I don't know if that's the case with Blake, but there plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest he doesn't have the physical and/or mental makeup to get fitter.

You clearly are serious with your content in this post. You could not be more wrong. Blake has been tried, has been shaped, has been given more opportunities than any other draftee in memory in just about all positions. (ruck excluded) He has also been retained on the list for three years when his effort and mental resilience IMO does not deserve a list spot. After three years on the list Blake has not twigged that he needs to increase his fitness levels. I can’t remember ever seeing him fit. He struggles running out reserve games.

I remember when draft watchers said Blake is better than his brother. So us supporters keep waiting for that moment when it will all click for Blake and he can prove that he is an AFL standard footballer. So far nothing. For you to claim he has not been given opportunity is not quite correct.

In the end, it is Blake who hasn’t given Blake a chance of success.

How could you give a guy more opportunity up the ground when he probably cant run under 8 mins in a 2km time trial?

At what point do you stop rewarding someone and gifting them opportunity when they show almost no desire to get better?

Definitely agree he has more 'talent' than Abberley or Greene, but Reville is someone who as AFL attributes in spades and if given the same opportunities as Coleman, I believe would flourish.

Reville has also grown as a player while working a demanding job. I think he could flourish in a full time environment.

Not targeted specifically at our club, but all AFL club’s 2nds sides might be part of a new expanded national reserves competition, which is said to be in place by start of 2027 season, replacing the current VFL system.

A national AFL reserves competition, or expanded VFL, could be on the cards in the coming years as West Coast flagged concerns over the club’s options in the west.

Code Sports reports Eagles CEO Trevor Nisbett fronted the WAFL club presidents on Tuesday after his struggling club was granted list concessions following a winless season and third wooden spoon in a row.

He told the presidents West Coast had the possibility of following Adelaide and Port Adelaide in abandoning their state leagues and either joining an expanded VFL or full AFL reserves competition to develop their young players.

The move would cost the WAFL $600,000 a year in license fees and $1 million if Fremantle did the same and abandoned their partnership with Peel Thunder.

The other options floated by Nisbett, to align with a WAFL club (most likely Perth Demons but this would be very hard to get across the line) or spreading their players across the league (which would be difficult to run and out-of-line with all other AFL clubs), were viewed as much more unrealistic by the presidents which is why they took the AFL reserves competition threat so seriously.

The Western and South Australian clubs are the only ones not involved in the expanded VFL, which holds the historic name despite featuring clubs in New South Wales and Queensland, including 2023 premiers Gold Coast.

Adelaide and Port Adelaide could be involved in an expanded VFL as soon as next season, according to the report, and a full AFL reserves comp is viewed as a possibility for 2027 - as long as the arrangements with AFL airline partner Virgin are changed so all team flights can be chartered.

The VFL currently features a whopping 21 clubs - 11 reserves sides for Gold Coast, Brisbane, the Western Bulldogs (Footscray), Collingwood, Richmond, North Melbourne, Carlton, GWS, Geelong, Essendon and Sydney, plus aligned sides Casey (Melbourne), Box Hill (Hawthorn) and Sandringham (St Kilda).

There are also seven stand-alone sides - Werribee, Williamstown and Port Melbourne who have financial advantages through pokie machines, plus Southport, Frankston, Northern Bullants and Coburg.

The uncompetitiveness of the latter three became a major concern last season with Coburg going winless while Northern Bullants finished with a percentage of 40.4.

Playing in the WAFL just doesn’t work for WC as they have to get permission from the other clubs for every non AFL listed player they sign for their reserves, so they end up with a bunch of non WAFL caliber players on their reserves list.
