Well it's coming into round 18 and Essendon are 4th on the ladder, anything below 60k would be disappointing.

Ess vs Freo might turn out to be a top 4 clash, AFL are panicking

Compare how full the ground was for the St Kilda game which was over 39k and then how full it was for this game which only got 33k... something seems amiss.

I arrived at the ground just as the teams were running out and lines at the gate I went in were still very long - got my bag checked and security scanned but the person holding the machine that scans the ticket for entry just looked at the ticket on the phone and said go straight thru.

Yesterday's game was the fullest the stadium has been since round one - there was probably more people at the round 1 game still compared to yesterday, but there was no way the difference in total attendances for the two games was 6000 as per the numbers are saying.

The AFL have ruined one of the VFL’s most fierce modern day rivalries (which was once touted as a round 1 game) by scheduling it year after year at Marvel Stadium.

Yep it's a clear strategy to kill it off. Only played once a year for what 20+ seasons now or something despite both clubs requesting to play more and at the MCG. Good chance the Hawks will be out of the finals race by the time we play which is why they scheduled it so late in the season. Look out for Hawks/Blues to be a Thursday night attendance killing game in 2025, it's a prime candidate!

No mate, anything above 50K would be fine for a freezing Saturday night.
Melbourne Geelong drew 51.7k in the same timeslot when both teams were playing well. It will be a little more than that because of Essendon.

30,183 at the Gabba.

Decent for a Sunday late game.
Feel like this crowds being underplayed a little bit. 30k used to be reserved for the big Vic teams at the Gabba. Even then, games against the Blues and Bombers in years gone by have struggled to hit that mark. So for 30k against a non-rival like Adelaide in a Sunday twilight spot is incredible. I don’t think Footy will ever be the predominant code in the sunshine state but numbers like that just demonstrate the strong foothold AFL has in SE Qld

dave10 and Raz Man what do we think for next Saturday night now.

Essendon winning and Melbourne putting two decent games in a row will help massively. Won’t be as many kids as today but the free tickets will still help. Obviously Saturday night is a bad timeslot for crowds and it looks like it’s going to be properly cold.

Also, three away games at the G for Essendon may mean people don’t want to pay again to attend.

Hoping for 55-60 but think it may be very high 40s.
Mate! I am genuinely thinking 60,000 + and that is because our win will bring out the belief for some Bomber fans now that we actually "belong". Melbourne fans will also be buoyant after drubbing the Eagles (whom some thought could potentially lose) and are in still in the finals race.

Melbourne v Essendon is one of those fixtures which has been underwhelming purely bc both clubs never are winning and contending at the same time. Imagine when both clubs are firing at the same time, this fixture could be anything!

Good post. I thought it was a terrific crowd against a lowly opponent.

Collingwood Geelong looks pretty good with only standing room left. There’s level 4 reserve seats available, however they seemed to sell many today and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re all gone or close to it by Friday.

It might be a sneaky big crowd, similar to a few matches ten or so years ago.

After our recent form it will be much lower than what I was hoping for. I’m doubtful it gets to 80k but anything over 75k is a massive pass.

Issue will be reserved seat no shows. Pies / Bombers ‘only’ got 81,711, impacted by lots of member seat no shows. Suspect it will be bigger this week.. Id say 75-78k.

Standing room seems to be sold out now, no public tickets currently available.

The final bay of mcc Reserved seats is on sale now (Q39). They’ve sold up to row N, with seats up to row x available.

I’m fairly optimistic of a 78,000+ crowd.

This is a good example of how crowds in the last few years have grown on the back of ‘sellout’ mindset driving much earlier ticket pre sales.. Until this week perhaps, this game for weeks has been billed a potential heavyweight contest of high stakes. With lots of big MCG crowds across the league, fans have piled in early to secure seats, leading this to sellout. This means big crowds are sort of locked in.

Comes down to club member show rate now. Will it be 77k or 86k? I suspect closer to the former..

How is Melbourne v Essendon fairing...?!
Its picked up a fair bit this week.
MCC selling to row Y in Q46-Q48 and row Q in Q42-Q45 but suspect it will be to row Y all around by the end of the week.
AFL level 4 front up to Q20 and level 1 open up to M23.
General public level 1 all of Olympic and Southern (except M3 and M4 which will be Melbourne only GA) will be sold by Saturday. They've put unused Presidents club seats on level 2 in N31/32 on sale but the rest of Ponsford level 2 is sold out.
They have put Q7 on sale up to row P on sale which is next to the Essendon away reserved seating in Q8-Q15.

To me, the sales are ahead of where the Melbourne Geelong game (51.5k) were and behind Carlton Melbourne (58K).
Only thing we don't know is what the free kids tickets will do for GA and how many more Essendon GA away members will show up compared to Geelong.

I'm thinking 55k.

I've only included games where it's in the home city of the team (i.e. not Darwin, Alice Springs, Hobart, Launceston, Ballarat or Canberra). The only team that has played away from it's home ground in it's home city is Collingwood vs West Coast at Marvel. Perhaps they could have drawn more at the MCG, so their average could have been higher.

Yeah, I thought it would pick up after both teams winning and winning nicely to give each supporter group a pep up. I reckon Bomber fans will want to see them against Melbourne at the 'G and win. Our last win against you guys was in Gather round last year so we missed out! They don't want to miss out on this opportunity this time.
