Are we heightist or something ?

Always pick the short fellas.

Also Seems like we recruit for position unknowns of late.

Get me a 200cm specimen every day of the week. Should be looking for the next Sam Darcy, instead we recruit for the least important roles where we already have depth.

No KPD, no barrel chested contested bull, no KPF.

Logan’s draft night was the best feeling, Stephen’s the worst. This draft gets a D Minus.

The issue is though who is after Hayward and Papley if they go down given their durability took a hit. The cupboard is pretty bare for our general forwards. Also with Parker gone it opens up a spot. We need more competition in that area of our list.

Our ground level game in the f50 was appalling in the GF. Two athletic and crafty forwards does give me optimism. Both Dattoli and Bowan are rated very well aerially so that ticks off a need. It’s how the game is shaping, the general forwards are critical.

Wicks had opportunities this year but couldn’t grasp it. Corey/Cleary/Campbell roamed through there but were out of position. So picking up two fwds who can compete I’m content with. Dattoli seems the type that could impact early too.

I too would love a 200cm kpd given we are an undersized defence. The depth is a concern/unknown, but Snell and Edwards were on the emergencies on numerous occasions this year so hoping they can take a big step next year.
We had plenty of small forward options already. Yes, they may not all have been drafted as small forwards, but most of Brisbane's weren't either.

Our problem in the GF was not the lack of small forward options on the list (medium fwd was a need), it was us not playing them in the lead up and on the day, despite promise.

Seems to be a reactionary thought process by many to emulate Brisbane and one that doesn't really consider where Brisbane got their forward line from in the first place.

So you think our KPD depth is strong? You think if a 200cm key forward gets on a roll we are capable of stopping them?
Look. I want a monster KPD to take on the monster KPFs.
But
Who were they in this draft and did they fall at our picks? You just can't wish your needs to be available at your picks. They actually have to exist and be there available.

Saying we did not take a monster KPD and so our draft is a failure is nuts. Most clubs at the high end draft the best player at their pick. Later on they draft for need.

We tried to trade Barass and the blond Collingwood guy and I Imagine others.
But
If they don't want to come to Sydney are the recruiters failing?

There is a limited amount of players and KPs that you want are dragons teeth sometimes.

On balance over two nights, not hugely happy with the draft. Will back any player we draft however.

Looking at it, lack of KPFs is weird and not hugely happy about not stashing one away at our first picks.

eh, see how it plays out over the never few years

This is the problem. Draft the best available player around each pick for your biggest remaining needs. If there's no-one for that need for ages, pick for another need or trade back.

Unless you have no needs, picking the best available players to a fault is for rebuilding sides who can stockpile or be deficient in certain areas and have time to sort through the players, move them around, pick more up later with good picks as they continue to suck etc.

We have Papley, Wicks, Cleary, Hanily so what do we do, pick another couple.

Our defence is a massive priority - where is our KPD? Picked no one who could take the top forward of the future. Also, Where is the next Sam Darcy type ?
Campbell is the one who does my head in. Even just play him at half forward, that's literally one of his draft positions that got him picked up at #5. Yet we persist throwing him around the ground so he has little impact, if we don't just push him out to be sub. Then along with others, we ignore any promising signs and spend first rounders on small forwards as if we're analysing a different list.

Medium forward was definitely a need though, really only have Hayward now Heeney is a mid.

Yes agree fully with that. Campbell as well.

The Swans aren’t a basketball team, it’s not all about height.

I can't speak for their quality but these key forwards and defenders were taken after our first pick but before our third

Harry Armstrong - 195cm
Matt Whitlock - 197cm
Thomas Sims - 199cm
Jobe Shanahan - 195cm
James Barrat - 194cm
Jack Whitlock - 200cm
Charlie Nicholls - 197cm
Noah Mraz - 198cm
Harry O'Farrell - 197cm

Surely one of them would have been a good option, or are they all crap?

In terms of contested KPD types, you'd probably be looking at O'Farrell, Barrat, maybe Clancy Dennis or Tom Bell later (who are still on the board).

The players who are key forwards could easily be converted to being key defenders too so if we wanted to draft Armstrong and play him as a KPD we could have done that.

Not sure I agree with that. I think some can convert, but not all. Shanahan was mentioned as a potential defender.

I'm not sure we'll ever have a draft that you're not happy with.

There’s been a few drafts I didn’t love actually but these are all good kids it’s now all development.

We took the types I wanted that’s all I can ask, personally would have taken a pick when we passed but it’s all sweet can pick an inside mid in the rookie draft.
