I think it was a mistake. Getting into a game of trading future picks to match academy bids would be an enormous gamble that would eventually catch up with us.

Maybe the club just doesn't rate our crop next year as high as some of us do.

We have 2 years of picks to trade if need be we didn’t need to trade more in. Every year there’s at least one of these kids that don’t come on anyway

I think it is a very risky approach to just start trading away all your future selections.

we won't need to as one or two at least will fall, remember when Edwards was a top 20 pick...he went in the rookie draft. Every year this happens too. We will get another pick in the second round if need be, not hard to flip one of your futures

I reckon we still have too many mids of the wrong type. Once we balance the side and get more inside mids into the side, there will be some outside mids that will be left high and dry. One or two may be squeezed out. We may get some draft picks for those left on the pine too long in 2025 exploring their options.

It will be about balancing the list for sure but sending picks to the future for academy matching I’m not a fan of

Wasn't what I was talking about.
If you read what I said carefully a player this year may be forced out of the team thus maybe generating draft pick/s to be used in the next draft period when we have 3 highly rated Academy players.

I don't know where you get sending draft picks to the future from.

BTW I am not a fan of getting into the trap of using future draft picks for current drafts as a matter of course. You could end up like some clubs having a year with little of no draft capital. Strangles the side ongoing.

I agree, we are not quite balanced in our list.
Who do you think are most likely to be squeezed out? Mitchell, Corey, Bice*, Roberts*, Lloyd, Florent, Jordon? Assuming Gulden and McInerney are safe. Have I missed anyone? Do we seek to get trade value, however low? These are the conundrums that Keane and Co will be facing. You could get trade value for Florent but SFA for Mitchell.

Corey, Mitchell, Ladhams, Rampe on the senior list would be those less likely to be here after 2025. Ladhams probably the only one with some trade value, if any.

Hamling, Francis, Wicks, Kirk, maybe Buller, maybe Hanily off the rookie. Wicks might attract a late pick, but clubs could get him as DFA.

One of McLean or Amartey might get something via trade if they are on the outer. Lloyd might go elsewhere if he's on the outer too, but UFA and won't get much compo.

There’s a few players we could look to trade that have value now obviously Chad is the big fish, but a guy like Sheldrick would get something too, and these can be used to match bids. My honest opinion is only one of these guys will be near the top 10, the others we can match using our second/third whatever. If we have to trade a 2027 pick so be it. I wouldn’t be trading much of our futures although the 2027 drag will be a waste of time as Tassie will pillage the draft

Was responding more to the outside mid type players but the first two groups will probably provide the list spots at the end of the year. I imagine players that would attract decent compo are the ones we would mostly want to keep.

I reckon it could come from left field. It depends upon if they make changes to balance the side. An injury to a player could keep them out of the team for most of the year. Not just because of the injury but because the player that replaced them is playing so well. Snakes and Ladders stuff.

Sticking my neck out I could make a case for
1. Campbell not getting a look in R0 and struggling to find a place in the best 23 for quite some time.
2. Jordons role is a forwards spot. Datolli could come out of the blocks and ignite a partnership with Papley that is irresistible for them, the side, the team and the scoreboard.
3. Roberts to me is a mid playing back. Bice may make a compelling argument to own that spot.

I could go on.

But preseasons throw up these types of scenarios because players are training down houses and come out a cross between Arnold Swartzenegger, Gout Gout and Ablett jnr and it changes the side forever. Who would have thought Roberts would nail down a spot for the year.

Cambell might not get 3 games all year. We might be 5 games clear on the ladder again. He is out of contract. Etc

I still not have spoken about fitting in Mills, Sheldrick and Adams to the midfield.

Or Cleary.

Your 3 points are well within the realm of possibility. Jordon is a funny one. I think he did a pretty good tagging job both on backs and when he was asked to on mids. Would he be in the team as a mid? Dunno. Maybe he's the replacement for Harry 🤷
Possibly Roberts could replace Jordon and be in turn be replaced by Bice. Campbell 🤔 I can't see him in my best 23.
If you're looking to improve hardness Lloyd isn't your man but he has his skills.
A lot of these alternatives are around the margins rather than making fundamental difference.

You could think forever about the possibilities.
I still say we have too many mids and something will give. The cream is still rising too putting pressure on the incumbents.

There will be a shakeout. And it will be healthy for the side. Hopefully after the side makes the right choices on positional changes. We win the 25 premiership. Other very good players are on the outer. Life stuff happens. Players not getting opportunities leave. We get some draft picks. We get another good shot at another premiership in 26.
