Opinion 2024 AFL Draft - Nights 1 & 2, from 7pm AEST

For the 20th time today how is a KPD selected today going to be any different to the other 0 game players that we have.

Your creating a Paradox

If we picked a KPD with our first pick that player could have played in 2025. Sam Taylor played 8 games for GWS in his first year, in fact many key defenders play games in their first year. Key Defenders don't need the time to develop that key forwards do, usually anyway.

This is an important draft to have nailed… the last few have been dysmal. Cannot afford to go 3 odd years of poor drafts.

Time will tell
Bit harsh on 2021 with Roberts and Sheldrick (the talent is there), though we went all smalls at the national.

Even harsher on 2023, with Green the best ruck, Cleary looks good, Snell a need.

How?

Small forward-tick
Medium forward- tick
Rampe replacement- tick
KPD-tick

The KPF next year

Can add an inside mid in the rookie draft

I was bored and checked the last few years draft threads you say every year we got it right and can look at the other need next draft 🤣

22 you have about 20 posts that Konstanty will be a gun , North must have read your work 🤣.

Maybe you will be right this time

Don't know anything about the kids so won't question their ability. All I know is it was a big draft for us given our last few, not so good, definitely need a couple of these guys to be AFL standard. Hope they do...if not....Pressure needs to come on the recruiting department.

Didn't mind passing on the academy guy, needed to call a bluff at some point....seemed a good one to do it on, no offence to the kid.
Needs wise for our list a mixed bag. Desperately need a small forward so big tick, smalls can play early so hopefully this kid can. Needed a KD, kind of tick, I guess, 192cm.....we do love our Key backs to be on the smaller key position size. If half as good as his brother though seems decent.
Other 2 picks didn't appear to address needs, but maybe they're too good to pass up......f knows. Personally never convinced about mature agers with good picks in a ND, prefer those punts in the rookie...but anyway good luck to him.

Am shocked we didn't grab a developing key forward though. A kid was never going to do anything next year, but means it won't be till 2026 for the clock to even start on a developing forward. Our stocks there look very thin.
McLean & Amartey both better suited as ruck/forwards and should probably be competing for one spot. Hamling a stop gap who'll never be anything as a forward at AFL level. Means McDonald & Buller are genuinely the only natural KPF's on the list. Unless Amartey becomes more than an athletic kick/mark player and suddenly develops forward craft that he hasn't shown in 7 odd years in the system, there's a lot of pressure on Logan (or somehow the 1 gamer Buller) to really become a top liner.

So a player drafted would do better than someone with 2+ AFL preseasons.

Your having a bloody stinker here because it makes no logical sense

Don't give Longmire ideas.

The problem is none of us have an answer to that question, none of us would even have a hint of an answer and that is a massive problem. I bet every other club in the AFL knows who their 3rd KPD is right now, and we don't.
Gees you talk some shit

We have Chamberlain coming next year for KPF and agree that we might take a flyer on another KPD next year but think that 6 KPD and KPFs each is about right for a list
We've had 7 KPDs plus Fox before on our list and been playing Blakey as a KPD due to injuries/inexperience.

So with Tmac and Melican, plus a bunch of untried guys, 6 is not enough.

All of whom were taken with really late speculative picks, none of whom have jumped out and screamed "pick me", at least in terms of the KPD's on our list who have not played games yet.

It is not surprising the last KPD we drafted that has actually worked out we took in the second round (McCartin). If we are only picking these players with 3rd, 4th or rookie selections we are not serious.

Andrew's wingspan and jump more than makes up for his perceived lack of height.

I've been saying this for years but I wish footy followed in basketball's footsteps of measuring and listing a player's wingspan, particularly for the medium and tall forwards. It's part of what makes players like Andrew, Bowman and Hayward such assets to the game.

Re. KPD

Mraz sounds like he would have been a good option if he was still there at pick 41. He seems a big athletic lockdown defender. But at our 3rd/4th pick, I am not sure the KPD available would have significantly improved on Edwards/Snell who have a few years in our system and be looking to debut.

Re. Inside mid

Kennedy, Boxshall and Urquart looked good as contested mids. And I thought we would take one of them with pick 41. So I wonder if they feel Sheldrick/Cleary/Roberts can play more in midfield. Especially if Bice can replace Roberts at half back. And Dattoli can play forward instead of Cleary.

Re. KPF

Probably a wasted opportunity to take a key forward for the future. It seems rare to have several highly rated tall forwards still available in the 20s. But the club must have really liked Bowman.
