Opinion 2024 AFL Draft - Nights 1 & 2, from 7pm AEST

On balance over two nights, not hugely happy with the draft. Will back any player we draft however.

Looking at it, lack of KPFs is weird and not hugely happy about not stashing one away at our first picks.

eh, see how it plays out over the never few years

Guess the thinking will be we have a couple next year coming through so maybe that’s the thinking.

In terms of contested KPD types, you'd probably be looking at O'Farrell, Barrat, maybe Clancy Dennis or Tom Bell later (who are still on the board).

Do like Tom Bell as a punt in the rookie draft don’t hate that call actually.

I feel... whelmed.

There is no point spitting the dummy over a draft. At the end of the day they're all nobodies until they prove themselves to be somebodies, so you can get the exact player you're after and it still won't guarantee they'll actually be good.

I think my frustration is not with the individual selections, but more the general direction I feel the list is going in, not helped at all by this draft haul on first impressions.

I'm just not really seeing "physicality" being much of a priority, from the draft, right through to team selection. Not one player we've drafted has a rookie me profile (I know it is not the be all that ends all) that even mentions hardness or contested side of the game as a strength. This would probably not be much of an issue if it weren't for the fact the same would be true of the overwhelming majority of the list.

And when I think about our losses in recent years - both the honourable and the diabolical losses - the common denominator in them has not been a lack of class, or speed, or athleticism. It's been a lack of hardness. Getting smacked in the midfield and having poor physical pressure showings and being beaten in 1v1s in general play. I'm just not seeing the evidence that the powers that be at our club have identified this as a weakness on the list both in the present and going forward.

I have hopes that Dattoli can develop this side of his game, as he seems to be competitive and maybe with the opening for a spot there for the taking, he may go helter skelter to win it. And I'm pleased to read that Andrew has done good lockdown roles as a defender despite his size, so is not just a flashy intercepting type. Bowman & Bice look like they could be good players but I find it hard to get excited by them because as I've talked about here, I think they may be more of the same and so won't move the needle much.

Just my thoughts. Good luck to all the boys, and love the diversity of the picks, with a few over-agers in the mix.

Settled then.

Tom Bell.
Phoenix Hargrave.

Stumpf or Rosenzweig are KPF options still around.

MacTaggart or Leidler if we wanted an actual small defender.

Inside mid second pick for me but not against a small defender as you listed. I wouldn’t go a KPF the more I think about it but Stumpf purely for the name go for it.

The other thing I’d consider and many won’t agree is keeping a spot open and getting Cunningham (Carl) to train purely as I don’t question the talent it’s the body.

I just realised that because Francis only nominated for the pre-season draft, he can only be taken back onto the senior list.

If that's correct, the senior list will now be back to 37, which means we will have 2 rookie spots free.

I'm not going to pretend to know all these players in the draft.

Riak I wasn't so keen on but reading his bio is promising.

I like the sound of Bice. We know he can perform at VFL level and I expect him to debut next year.

Datolli and Bowman could be anything.

Things which I'm more puzzled about are who we missed rather than got.

Cochran sounds like a great pickup so surprised on passing such a late bid.

Kennedy seems like a winner and I'll be watching him for years.

Davidson is also another who I think will settle into AFL quickly.

Feels like Bulldogs will walk away strongly from this

This guy at 26 seems more and more ridiculous given our needs and what was available at the pick.
I really hope I’m wrong but I can let see this guy being more than a bit of a flash in the pan every now and then.

Kid hasn't even played a game yet, calm down.

26 -30 was his range, has some obvious nous around goal and athleticism, fills a need in our team and AFL is drifting to these types of forwards rather than talls

We evidently rated Andrew higher than Cochran (or at least saw him as suitable to our needs) which justifies us passing on him. Glad we had the balls to do it.
Who needs a 195 cm player that came first in the 2km at the combine, as well as being a state ranked 400 & 800 meter athlete? I mean what could you possibly do with a kid like that in development?

History suggests when this board thinks we won the draft we don't. The fact this board is so upset over the picks fills me with a lot of confidence
2022

Wrong types in the national draft, speculative picks.

Some of us were told to calm down and trust the club.

It seems to me that the club considers Edwards to be the big KPD that we need. Let’s hope he rises to the occasion.
There seem to be big hopes for him last preseason but he never quite cracked it. Combination of Horse preferring Francis, shuffling magnets and then he had the infected leg. I think most can agree that Francis is not the long term solution (or even the short term - imo we should have de-listed him). It's time for Horse to give Edwards a go and see whether he's up to it.

Was pretty upset about no Kennedy and Armstrong , but so happy for 2 great young men and quality families.
Had the pleasure of being with both and the joy in the Kennedy home was something else .
Clubs do it well , within 10 minutes the Bont had sent Luke a message .
It was a big night .

Kennedy feels like one the competition will wonder how he slid so far

If he turns out great, I will be hoping (expecting) him to get homesick in 2 years.
If he turns out a dud, I will be hoping he enjoys the Melbourne lifestyle and clogs Collingwood's list for a few years.

This is where you are so right with this, i was so happy that we let Cochran go , the other plus is that the Filth can't complain about the academy .
Im pretty sure i posted after the VFLGF that KB was keen on Bice and he got his way . Will play round 0
