Sure, just feels like every year and every poor GF result we have excuses ready to go. Other clubs don't need excuses they just get it done.
It's not an excuse, it's a reason for why we might not have performed as well on the day.

We were much harder hit by umpiring and injury in 2016, than the Dogs, that's just facts.

There was no excuse/reason for 2014, nor for the depths of the poor performance in 22.

This year, we should have put Jordon and Parker into the middle earlier, played Heeney forward if he was struggling. That extra injury impact doesn't even come close to a reason why it was so lopsided.

Yes, it's a different topic though, to having a player go down or be hampered by something new on the day (that you may not just be able to inject or prepare for).

The coach picked injured players in every one of these matches, surely eventually the buck stops there. You'd think he would have learnt this year

16 still counts because we were by far a better side than the Dogs that year so even with umpiring going against us we should have been far enough in front that it didn't matter.
It's funny how my thoughts of this and 2012 have changed on the back of my devastation at this years GF result.
I was so proud of 2012, but all of a sudden the gloss has dimmed and I'm now feeling we were just lucky that Buddy and Roughy had no idea how to get a ball through the big sticks.
As for 2016, I've always blamed the umpiring, but I've swung completely to the other side now. We should have beaten them easily, bad umpiring, injuries, whatever.
It's now down in my books as yet another choke 🤬

I've said this for years Jewels.

Umpiring was absolutely a disgrace, and I think if it was fairly adjudicated (or even close to it) then we maybe pinch that game. But it was us having only about five blokes turn up and have good games that made sure a win didn't happen.

Definitely not the choke of 2014, 2022 or this year, but still a choke nonetheless.

I will add though that the Bulldogs (as well as GWS) were just not a good match-up for us that year. We were pretty much the perfectly-balanced side in every facet, bar one - teams that spread with speed from the midfield killed our slower midfield. We only lost 7 games that whole year and 4 of them were against those two sides.

When you finish top with 155% and you lose against 7th regardless of other factors its a choke.

Gunston was missing as well

The potential perils of long term contracts and salary cap 'smoothing';

Obviously long term contracts have their advantages, but gee when it goes wrong and the contracts are back-ended.

Melbourne pay 'out $3.1 million to Angus Brayshaw following his medical retirement.'
Under current rules, 90 per cent of Brayshaw’s 2024 payment is outside the club’s total player payments, with 75 per cent in 2025 and 50 per cent in 2026. But the fact he was contracted until 2028 means the full amount of what could be a heavily back-ended contract must also be included in the salary cap in 2027 and 2028.

They'll be thanking their lucky stars for the increase in cap over the coming years.

Sure, but we can't keep blaming the umps they were putrid yes, we could have also made the most of our chances. Horse either wins the flag this coming year or he goes, nothing in between.
I don't KEEP blaming them. Don't put words in my mouth. You can't rewrite history, only refer to it. It was a close GF that could have gone either way.

My initial reaction is a case where the player clearly retires due to injury seems unfair the club are punished twice effectively - lose the player and some cap space .

Let's face it, SM made a shit call lumping 2016 in with the other examples, and call it a day.

2016 scores were level with 11 minutes to go and we hadn't had a free kick for 2 and a bit quarters.

Umps ****ed us and either way was hardly
embarrassing.

It's another loss in a granny which is ****ed but still it's not like the others.

I'm truly sorry you feel that way Jewels. You should re-watch it.

Yeah, nah.

As someone else said, the more time goes on, the more 2012 looks a fluke as all other GF appearances broadly followed the same pattern.

Yeah, find me a team that's still equal at 11 minutes to after having three umpiring records set against them and losing a rotation in the last quarter - again from an uncalled free. 14, 22, 24 were bed wetting, 16 absolutely wasn't.

Against a side that much worse than us that year, yeah it was.

I agree with your thoughts on 2016.

Although I don't think the gloss has been taken away from 2012. In the 8 grand finals Hawthorn has played in dating back to 1988 we are the only side to have beaten them, and they then went on to win the next 3 premierships after their loss to us, cementing them as one of the greatest sides ever. 2012 was a see-saw match the whole way through and sure we were lucky they missed some shots at goal, but I believe you need some luck in Grand Finals, thats just the way it goes. I believe we were 100% the more deserving and better team in 2012 and I believe it was a stronger performance than 2005, considering the opponent.
