The rest

Boyd has been a lock for me for some time.

Young will fight hard to regain his position, Kemp will improve. One or the other will start

Kennedy will probably be starting 22, but where and for who

Once again i have Jsos out of the side, but keeps putting his hand up

Williams would be the perfect forward/midfielder, but after doing a knee, club will probably start him behind the ball

Saw enough of Cowan to suggest he could lock in a position next year if he has a big preseason

Also backing in little Durdin to take a spot if he gets his body right

The 8 players, emergencies and in contention are pretty decent

Could we see a surprise in Binns or Carroll? Who knows, but it's exciting

Also based on Dow and Fisher being elsewhere next year
E Hollands in the mix, pressing will be very important for a number of players

Gee this is an exciting team to watch over the summer

I like it

Personally, I like Hewett more than Kennedy - but, that’s marginal

Adding these guys will make our team more zippy: ZWilliams, EHolland, CDurdin & Binns - bring on 2024!

FB: Marchbank, Weitering, Boyd
HB: Williams, McGovern, Saad

C: Acres, Cripps, O Hollands
R: De Koning, Cerra, Walsh

HF: Martin, Kemp, E Hollands
FF: McKay, Curnow, Motlop

Int: Newman (def), Hewett (inside), Docherty (mid/wing), C Durdin (fwd)

Sub: Binns
I’m having another look with this team vs our prelim final team.

Ins: ZWilliams Kemp EHollands CDurdin Binns

Out: Cincotta Pitto Fogarty Kennedy Cottrell

TDK needs to standup, but other than that and assuming natural development/ improvements the ins look a fair bit stronger than the outs & much zippier too

My post-trade period best 22 for 2024:

FB: Boyd Weitering Kemp
HB: Newman McGovern Saad
C: Acres Cripps Docherty
HF: E.Hollands McKay Martin
FF: Motlop Curnow C.Durdin
FOL: TDK Walsh Cerra
INT: Williams Hewett Cottrell Silvagni

Insanely tough and there are a few others I want to fit in meaning it is a VERY fluid best 22 at this point.

For mine:

Marchbank Weitering Boyd
Saad McGovern Newman
Acres Cripps O.Hollands
Martin McKay E.Hollands
Motlop Charles Durdin

Pittonet Cerra Walsh

TDK Doc Williams Kemp Cottrell

Big fan of George - but we must get a bit more fleet. Superb man to have in the wings.
Big fan of Cowan - But gee, a returning Williams and a runner up B&F to usurp. Big fan though.

I wouldn't heck with H as 2nd ruck, no matter how tempting. Get his confidence back as a true weapon KPF.

What to do with Kemp? Where to settle him?. Weiters clearly wants Marchy as shotgun imo. I also have always had faith in Marchy. He's bloody good. I'll go with Weiters' say. Kempy?.....big question for Coaches to solve. Looking forward to the answer.

Very much a work in progress this team. Great squad. Lacks pace, but can't have everything. We'll win our way, like all top sides do.

Heaps of players putting pressure on the 23, whatever it ends up Rd1.

C: Acres, Hewett, O Hollands

Thoughts (aka guesses)
  • I think our mids along with Martin/Mckay and Curnow give us enough goals. I think Owies and Durdin give us chase downs and pressure on opposition quarterbacks which we need as our midfield is slow. I think the Brissy final showed that as Kid Coleman tore us a new one. One chase down / tagger isnt enough it needs to be two specialists plus all the forwards putting in.
  • I don't think we can balance out our stoppage / transition balance with Pitto and a set of slow midfielders in our side. Dropping Pitto and using JSoS gives us extra def fwd 50 pressure plus run around the ground. Mckay to ruck in fwd 50 as and when required. The aim is to improve transition goals. Pitto can be good but when he has a bad run (most of 2023) he is god awful.
  • Cripps is a quandary to me. Similar to Greg W years ago, liability or godlike week to week. Difference in current game is waves of running transition players. Terrible user getting worse, slow on defence but on other side of coin, sometimes incredible effort. I think Cripps becomes in time a weight around our neck. I can accept it due to what he has given Carlton. More swap with JSoS and pinch hit midfield minutes. The change should start in 2024.
  • Hewett, Walsh and Cerra our key/starting midfielders for mine. All decent to good decision makers and users. Rotations to include: Williams, E Hollands, Docherty, & Cripps. Kennedy as sub to provide midfield assistance late.
  • Cottrell to cover wing/HFF rotations.
  • Nothing is easy and it is only my guess that 2 dedicated pressure fwds plus Martin are better than 1 pressure fwd and two creatives in Martin/Motlop. I'd start 2024 with Martin/Motlop competing for one spot favouring Martin because I prefer the height/physicality. Others have Motlop as a lock. He is fantastic and I could be making my crap up.

Do we go to the one ruck in TDK with JSOS as 20% second ruck?
Tough calls re Docherty, Cottrell and Cincotta. Boyd, Kemp and Williams push them out
E Hollands is fighting for a spot against Kennedy, Hewett, Cuningham and Martin.
We have small forwards but I seek upgrades …

Really, really difficult

Before addressing a B22, I'm going to speak to our new recruit and how I see him fitting in the side.

Forward 50, with midfield cameos, seems to be the line from Austin. I think he'll essentially play the role we used Walsh in for a little while - an extra mid who happens to start on the half forward flank.

If we win the clearance he's a kick away and has shown he can pull in a mark. He's also both a neat user of the ball and a long, accurate kick, and appears to make good quick decisions with his disposal. If he's marking within range, happy to for him to take the set shots. If he's just outside range or there's a player on a fast break, hopefully he's able to pick out the target and execute the pass.

If we lose the clearance he pushes hard up the ground and becomes another midfielder in transition.

If the stoppage is halved, he likely pushes up and becomes an extra number forward of the ball fir a handball release.

The harder part is determining whose spot he takes, and how we balance the forward line.

The key talls are safe - Curnow and Mackay hold their spots without a doubt. The third tall or resting ruck is a requirement - that will be either JSOS (if we elect to play TDK as sole ruck) or TDK (if he's supporting Pitto). Beyond that it gets trickier.

I think Martin is a lock - he's versatile, damaging, and offers a good blend of defensive cover and scoreboard impact. Leaves two spots on-field and one on the bench. I think we'll play two smalls - so Owies, Motlop, Durdin and Fogarty will be battling for two spots. I suspect we'll value defensive intent and workrate slightly ahead of scoreboard impact, given our other avenues to goal - but I also think there will be an expectation that defensive intent won't win out if scoreboard impact is absent. For that reason, I'd probably leave Fog out, and play Owies and one of Motlop/Durdin.

The final forward spot, potentially starting on the bench, is the one I see being held for the forward/mid hybrid, and I reckon it comes down to Cuningham and Hollands. I've been big on Cunners his whole time with us, and I haven't given up. But I think you'd have to be a little bit crazy to think he's a guaranteed starter ahead of Hollands.

Here's Hollands' first 5 games as a 20yo, vs Cuningham's whole 53-game career at AFL level. It's the 5 games Hollands got to play in the role we're likely to use him, before GC pushed him onto a wing this year.

As long as the two dedicated smalls are doing their thing defensively, and as long as Hollands buys in to the defensive requirements of our game, he has Cuningham covered everywhere. He may not be quite as quick off the mark, but he gets involved more often, hits the scoreboard more often and uses the ball just as well. This also represents his baseline as a 20yo, so the scope for him to improve further is, I would argue, greater than Cuningham's as a 26yo with 50 games already under his belt.

Not writing Cunners off by any stretch - but hopefully this recruitment is a little kick up the backside and propels him to another level as well.

You’ve got 5 players on the bench there TW.
Can’t sit on the fence here, one has to go … 😉

Onto a Best 22 + Emergencies:

FB: Newman, Weitering, Marchbank
HB: Williams, McGovern, Saad
C: Acres, Cripps, Hollands
R: TDK, Cerra, Walsh
HF: Hollands, McKay, Martin
FF: Motlop, Curnow, Owies
I/C: Docherty, Hewett, Cottrell, TDK
Sub: from Kemp, Silvagni, Kennedy, Durdin

Unlucky:
- would love to fit Boyd in, but Williams pushes him out.
- Cincotta was good last year but I think he gets squeezed too.
- Kemp very stiff, but I suspect that Marchbank and Gov would just edge him out....until one of them inevitably gets injured.
- Durdin could push either Motlop or Owies, but I do think he's coming from a little ways back after an interrupted year.
- JSOS unlucky with our demonstrated preference for the two-ruck setup.
- Kennedy a smidge behind Hewett for me, but maybe not much in it.
- Fogarty had a good year, and does some good work, but as long as the other smalls are doing the defensive things they'll always have him covered for hurt factor.
- Cuningham, as per previous post, needs to find ways to get involved more. Big preseason coming up.

Spots are going to be very tough hopefully we can keep a healthy list and see some real competition for spots

Would love to see some players get a full preseason in
IDK if Williams will be there round 1 but he will be later in the season
It wouldn’t hurt to give him a couple of games in the vfl and find his feet again.
I think Motlop will get better with each year of development in him so will hollands and cowman. Exciting times ahead a really solid team if we stay healthy!
