I’ll go with the rumoured 5 man bench and no sub.

Boyd Weitering McGovern
Newman Marchbank Saad
Hollands Cripps Acres
Martin Curnow Hollands
Durdin McKay Motlop

Pittonet Cerra Walsh

TDK Docherty Williams Kemp Hewett
That leaves the reserves as;
- S.Durdin -
Cowan - Young - Cincotta
Binns - Kennedy - Cottrell
Fantasia - Akuei - Cuningham
Owies - Lemmey - Silvagni

Mirkov - Carroll - Fogarty

HOK - Duffy - Monahan

I like this, my changes - Kennedy out, Motlop as sub, Fogarty comes in.

Think Fog had a fantastic run with us from the middle of the season and was instrumental in our finals.

Even if fully fit, I think Pittonet will not play every week and will be a variable in the team depending on the opposition. When opposition ruck is more mobile, we will play smaller and have Silvagni in for ruck/3rd tall fwd.

Yep, that’s pretty much it though id shuffle Akuei back.
Silvagni to CHF and O’Keefe alongside Lemmey and changing in the ruck.

Akuei Durdin …….
Cowan Young Cincotta
Binns Kennedy Cottrell
Cuningham Silvagni Fantasia
Owies Lemmey O’Keefe

Mirkov Carroll Fogarty

Leaves the unknown Irish and new draftees to fill out the remaining spots.

We get toweled with Silvagni in the ruck, that needs to end.
He needs to take his marking and goal kicking to the next level and be ready to replace Charlie/Harry if and when necessary…

Cincotta can just play that lock down role. Doesn't mean he is actually in our best 18 players just as a role.
I was pro Kemp but Marchy had a good game V Brisbane which has swung it 50/50 for me.
Hoping Hollands can really lock down a wing - was young and skinny and it showed. If not maybe there is a spot for Williams as we are have a lot of back flank/pocket types so maybe Williams goes to a wing.
I still think Cuninghams best is better than the other forward flank types but admit he probably hasn't delivered it consistently enough and doesn't provide anywhere near same forward pressure as a couple others.
I think Motlop will pull clear of the other pocket types. Hoping Fantasia gets to his best and Hollands can be an AFL player.
Hoping TDK can take the next step and do his fair share of grunt work so we don't need to play Pitto (nothing against Pitto just 2 rucks isn't ideal when we aren't the quickest team to start with).

It’s really good to hear fantasia is ready to go heading into this preseason!
If he makes his way into the one’s and stays fit, could he be our/or similar to a bobby hill type pickup imo.
If we can keep him on the park, then imo it could be a significant upside to this team with what he could add.

If you look at his sanfl stats he actually played the 2nd half of the season so has been right for a while. Kicked 20 goals in his last 8 games too.

I asked about it on the Port board as thought it odd he wasn't given a chance since they weren't going that well then. They reckon Hinkley had pretty much written him off so wasn't going to play him no matter what.

Not sold on Elijah hollands being best 22. Hasn’t done enough in his 3 years in the system.

Fantasia at his best is a flashy, goal kicking small forward. But we haven’t seen his best in over 5 years.

Both have a heap of work to do to make our best 22. I would not have them in unless they have a blistering pre-season.
Truly believe our improvement will come from within.

Walsh, Kennedy, Hewitt, Williams, JSOS, C Durdin, Boyd, Binns, Cowan, Motlop, Cincotta, Cuningham, Marchbank, Martin, Harry, McGovern, Pitt all played limited games due to a myriad of reasons (injury, form, confidence, development).

If we find improvement and continuity from most, we are a much stronger team and MUST be aiming at top 4 at a minimum.

Isn’t this exciting, we now have a few handy players who misses out in the best 22 - our bottom 6 got some serious competition :D

It would be interesting to see a preseason consensus best 22

I think Boyd and Williams are two of our best creative smalls and both can beat an opponent one on one, though we need the cover of Kemp if we want to play a different structure.

For mine, both Elijah and Orazio line up Round 1 if they're fit (pending suspension for Elijah of course)

Most stiff on the omission side is Cottrell, I'm just banking on Ollie putting on some weight and taking that spot from Cottrell. He would be very stiff to miss even still. I really like Cotters.

only debuted late in 2022.

Yes, pre season form will be important, but he'll be very, very close to playing round 1.

He wasn't picked up to play ressies.

Fantasia at his best is a flashy, goal kicking small forward. But we haven’t seen his best in over 5 years.

Reports suggest he played the last stretch of games in SANFL and was a strong contributor.

Short of another serious injury, he'll play Rd 1.

Points of improvements to be:
Ruck - TDK dominating for 70% of time and Jack or Harry covering
Forwards - Holland’s an upgrade on Fogarty, pressure on spots, Motlop goes up a gear
Backs - Williams
Sub - impact player like Kennedy or Fantasia maybe, especially if it becomes the 5th interchange instead of sub, maybe even Pittonet (change him off bench)

Draft - chase elite ball users for Outside Mid role and Key Forwards

Injuries will play a part, but of your 22, there are few that aren't walk up starts...very tough to predict.

I've highlighted those who aren't 'certs' if fit.

1. I can see Cotters sneaking in ahead of Hollands (maybe)
2. Kennedy might be in for Hewett.
3. Fantasia/Motlop or Durds/Owies? Depends who's been getting the job done...
4. Pitto or JSOS (horses for courses)
5. Cuners for Fog.

All in all, a good problem to have....

Docherty's position going forward is worth considering giving recent acquisitions.

E Hollands plus Fantasia in most peoples 22 if not at least 1 of them means Docherty no longer plays HFF like he did vs Brisbane. The fight of E Hollands, Cottrell, Martin, Cunners, Owies, JSoS, Motlop, Durdin, Fogarty & Fantasia etc for a couple of positions means Docherty wont play there in 2024. Having said that, Docherty playing HFF was typically less often than playing playing wing/midfield/HBF cover roles. But just wanted to eliminate HFF for Docherty in 2024 (just IMO/guess).

With Acres and the expected improvement of O Hollands on the other wing plus Cottrell close to a required cover/run for HFF/wing roles (huge running capacity up and back) means Docherty will be less preferred and only as cover at best on the wing. Our side lacks run so Cottrell despite being vanilla overall compared to Docherty gives us chase/run which we lack for better overall team performance...i think. The caveat is Cottrell doesn't drop his form which means VFL. I think Docherty's age now means we use his smarts than hard running.

This leaves Docherty a utility cover for wing/midfield/defence. In the midfield we should start with Cripps, Cerra, and Walsh with Hewett on the bench. I can only see Hewett being midfield, bench, and minor minutes either on wing/HBF. The point is Hewett would be first change in that midfield with Docherty/E E Hollands maybe going in there next. Kennedy is a bench/midfield option too complicating things if he is in form.

Looking at Docherty's age profile and the fact that unlike Pendles, Docherty has had serious injuries then the obvious use of his 'experience' is to put him back on the HBF as a general with 5-10 minute spells on ball. The wing now is a specialist role of running hard from goal square to goal square - it just doesnt seem a great fit for protecting Docherty through a season.

If he does go back to defence with minor midfield minutes as a second change then that impacts the back six choice. And based on form, it impacts Newman/Boyd selections assuming Newman reverts back to his normal form because 2023 was out of the box for him.

If all defensive smalls play up to their 'best' form its:
Saad
Williams
Docherty (age catching him)
Newman (a bit slow on speed and 2023 was an exception year)
Boyd (got upside but how much)
Cincotta
Cowan (got upside but how much in 2024)

There might only be 2 small defensive spots in our 22.

I think it really depends on availability and form of the other wing, mid and halfback options. Agree he wont be a HFF. Doch is our 4th best mid (after Cripps, Walsh, Cerra), 2nd best wing (after Acres) and 2nd best running defender (after Saad) so is a lock in the team but where he plays will depend on others.

His flexibility is a great asset and will probably extend his career. 1 position players usually retire sooner as once they are no longer preferred in that spot there is nowhere else to go.

Agree with all of that. Just in terms of where he starts is interesting. It's either wing instead of Holland, HBF instead of one of the other small defenders or off the bench.

Not being in the first midfield rotation means it opens the conundrum of where he starts and the following selection impact. Does he push out a winger, midfielder, small fwd or small defender to fit in the best 22. I think he pushes out either a winger/small defender with slight thinking of a small defender.

There is def sound reason that he might be the true utility in 2024 and start on the bench not pushing out a small defender. His 2024 role will either impact Cottrell/Hollands or Newman/Boyd/Cincotta/Cowan.
