My concern with Gerreyn is that he is inclined to take a chest mark. From the footage I have seen he is always taking the ball on the chest. That will not cut it in the AFL. You can have all the attributes of a dominate forward but if you’re not taking the ball out in front, arms extended then most if not all key defenders in the AFL are not letting him touch it.

Kicking and agility looks nice, but chest marks are for rookies. Even when he is open it is a chest mark. That’s the main reason I wouldn’t take him in the 1st round. More of a pick 30’s > rookie type selection.

I'd like to see us deal 10 for 13 and 29 if we're confident our guy will still be there.

We can then trade 24 to the highest bidder for a future first and still take 8 picks inside the top 30.

Well we can’t do that at the moment. If we trade 10 for 13 and 29 before the draft we’ll lose pick 29 before the draft starts. I’m not sure if you can do it in live trading.

Obviously, if we trade for pick 2 and reduce our total picks to 7 this would make sense. I would wait until we reach pick 10 in the draft before doing the trade, just in case a player we like slides to us at 10.

With our seemingly willingness to trade with Port for their 13 and 29 for our 10, we've obviously earmarked someone we are confident will be still available at 13 and thus allowing us to pick up 29 for "free". That tells me it could be a bit of a bolter. Who do we think we have in mind? Jack Whitlock? Harry Oliver perhaps? Faull?

I can see a world where we really go all in for quantity this year. Unlike most years there isn't much penalty in dropping from pick 20 to pick 30ish.

Slide some picks, trade into F1s, and trade down we could get a heap of good players this year and have a great draft hand next year > F1s, F2s plus salary cap trading.

You'd need to have good handle on those coming in past pick 25, and the guts to trade out and down. But this year you might make a killing over multiple drafts. Most years it wouldn't work. But it might in 2024.

Giving up on thought of pick 2 but very keen for the pick 10 to Port for their 13 & 29. Seems there are whispers Port may want Travaglia and might not make 13, so port willing to pay:

1- Lalor
6- Smillie
11- Lindsay
13- Hotton
18- Faull/Shanahan
20- Ess F1
23- Melb F1 from Ess (if Ess are that desperate to get back in for multiples)
24- Gerryn
29- Ough

I understand what you’re saying. But comparing the two isn’t fair lol. Lance was a highly rated junior and went pick 5.
I wouldn’t say it was a weakness of Fanklin’s considering he burst onto the scene early days. Though it is an area that can be developed, especially considering what ever key forward we draft will have the chance to develop under the best overhead mark in the comp in Lynch.

But look, Tom Hawkins made a career out of taking chest marks so it is possible for Gerreyn to make it. lol

I remember that draft fondly.

It’s been made out like Hawks were smarter than the rest and it turned out that way, but whilst Franklin was a huge talent, he had some major red flags and question marks. I have no doubt if he went to a weak club, he wouldn’t have developed like he did.

What I’m saying, is sometimes you have to look at the data and talent of a kid. Back in your development. Don’t rule out because of one factor when others present so strong. Whilst comparing him to Lance now looks absolutely moronic. Both at the same age?
