Surprised there's no thread for this particularly with the champs starting up.

I haven't been following the draft at all, so thought this video was pretty good as it gives a brief summary on where the draft is at this stage then some predications. Sounds like there's some good depth in the draft this year so we might be able to trade in some future picks into this year.

What player's do you want to see us target this year?

If we did end up getting a couple of firsts from losing key players. I'd like us to target a winger with elite pace and kicking skills as someone mentioned above. And also a damaging inside mid that can burst out the packs and hit the scoreboard. Richards looks set to cover that defensive MID type for the next few years. Sanders is an inside the packs, dish it out type. Just need a couple of more players with hurt factor to cover the midfield for the future.

Midfield goes deep this year, would not surprise me if the ones who end up amongst the better ones end up being picked in the teens.

Look for small defensive and forward types with the later picks. Obviously if we lose Busslinger, we need to target the next Jones.

I’m encouraged by the fact that we won’t need to trade into the top 5/10 in order to pick up a quality midfield prospect this year. I’d equally like to see us draft a defender in the Duryea mould, these types usually tend to fall lower in the draft. Wouldn’t mind adding another speedy option off the half back line with JJ nearing the end.

One for next year, but sort of relates to this year.

Article in the herald sun, Shifter gives his top 25 selections for 2025. Ten of those are father/son and academy players, none of them are with us. I guess that means a few clubs will want to get in future selections (which could be good for us), the suns in particular. They have 5 highly rated players in 2025.

There's a natural tendency to overrate these players before the championships, because they're "known" and whoever else is "unknown" and will tend to reveal themselves before the champs.

I still think there's a few, but there won't be 7 or 8 top 25 bid selections, let alone 10.

Totally agree. But given the amount of player's the suns have access to, they will likely have 2 or 3 up in the top 25. I think you could start to make some plans for that reason.

Agree with this. You get some like Harley Reid who are the projected #1 pick 12-24 months in advance and then back it up, but most of the time the rankings change massively in the top age year and it’s a waste of time preparing for F/S or academy bids 12 months in advance.

Ashton Moir projected as a likely top 2-3 pick 12 months out and went at #29. The year before both Harry Lemmey and Thomas Scully were being talked up as contenders for the #1 pick and ended up late 3rd / early 4th round picks. Inversely, Sam Darcy started his top age year with expectations he’d get a bid in the 3rd round and then shot on the rankings.

Is wests brother this year or next?

Surely we’d be getting more of an idea if Jaxon is on the horizon of being draftee if he’s in next years draft? Is he playing local footy or rep footy?

Can we please select Kyle Dunkley at the mid-season draft just to force that ridiculous family to deal with us again…..

How must it feel being his brothers companion pony as a career choice. Bloody embarrassing for the lot of them

He's in the Geelong Falcons u16s development side, and playing year 10 school footy at St Joseph's, so I'm guessing he's in the 2026 draft.
Believe he's also around the 188-190cm mark
Be interesting to see how he develops over the next few years

Dates are wrong. Cooney is 2026.

Was named for Vic Country squads too and considered a decent talent, as much as anyone can be two and a half years out, which is kind of meaningless. As pointed out basically half the draft wasn't in calculations a year out, let alone two and a half years. But obviously better to be thereabouts than an expectation they'll be good.

Many of the other names don't really appear like they're still playing footy, let alone draft relevant. Levi West has made younger schoolboy rep teams, he looks decent but with even more caveats.

Googling around a couple of the names like Riley Dickson appear to be decent junior local footy players, but it's a fair step up to rep squads, let alone NAB league, let alone being draft relevant.

In other words, how much height he grows!

Dale Morris’s boy may end out in the Brisbane academy?

Obviously a long way away but I suspect Picken’s son will not be playing for us.

As it stands our picks are currently 28, 49 and 82. After academy and father son selections that first pick is more than likely mid 30s.
At that part of the draft, things get a bit tricky. All the high end talents are gone as well as those with desirable traits that give them a point of difference or competitive advantage by position.
Tom Gross is one to keep an eye on to see how his development plays out that also might be available around that first pick. 181cm mid so a touch undersized and seems athletically capable without being outstanding.
Very good all round skill set though. Clean hands, composed, good decision maker, can kick the odd goal, will tackle and is relatively good with the contested stuff. Capable mark for his size.
That kind of player that does the right thing most of the time which I like. Could be a half forward/rotation mid at AFL level. Twomey compared him to Rory Sloane.
