There's more chance of Weideman making it back onto our list and being a perma best 22 player than Laurie becoming a regular midfield in our best 22. He's shown a little at Casey, but he's only been getting a game due to our complete lack of depth in the mid/forward area of the ground. This current contract will be his last unless he suddenly pulls some tricks out of his ass that we haven't seen yet. A rare blunder for JT

I’m not sure Laurie was a massive blunder. Have a look at who was after him in that 2020 draft. That draft was poor for talent, with surely COVID playing a massive role with no U18 season.

I can count about four players in the 37 selections taken after Laurie (put aside the unavailable Gulden) that are looking significantly better than Laurie. Lots of duds in that draft.

But in reality, guessing a small from the VFL (there's two we're interested in IIRC). Be interesting to see what happens with Andrew

Twomey suggested Collingwood had an interest in Riak Andrew. It might be Melbourne are happy to take him as a project rookie, but if someone bids in the national draft they won’t match.

Look forward to random melts then

As long as we take a key defender or a small forward I’m good.

That said I fully expect us to take an inside contested beast with poor disposal who can go forward.

Mitch Kirkwood Scott or Archer Day Wicks with our last pick?
Need another acronym to go with AMW and JVR now that ANB and KFW are gone.

Does MKS or ADW sound cooler?

Absolutely need a second ruck option coming through.

Small forwards i also think are a little more of a cherry on top type. Typically they go a little later in the first round, so you can specifically target them a little easier, and typically they don't take 4 years like a KPP to work out what you've got.

I wonder whether the club is thinking about trading in a ruck when Gawn starts fading, and maybe a KPP for the same reasons as you suggest - they take longer to develop.

We did it with May and Lever but had to cough up a lot.

Small forwards have become very important in the modern game. I know what you’re saying about ‘cherry on top’, but you must have a couple of quality smalls in the front half for both offensive and defensive purposes. The good ones are getting taken pretty high these days.

I totally agree that he wasn’t the worst selection in hindsight, but that doesn’t help where he’s at right now.

I can’t see him being any more than shallow depth for another 2 or 3 years at best.

Bloody hope I’m wrong of course!
