I think we've been spoiled rotten because we want the next Max Gawn.

If Gawn’s injury was career ending still think it would be stupid for us to get English. Therefore, I can’t wait to see Tim in the red and blue next year.

Then he'd need to change his name to Thim Norway/Norveige, or Tim Icelandson.

Cause if he went to West Coast he'd be called Tim Sweden/Svenska.

A short history of the last 10 premiership side’s ruckmen:

2014-15: Ben McEvoy/David Hale
2016: Tom Boyd/Jordan Roughead
2017, 19-20: Toby Nankervis/Shaun Grigg
2018: Scott Lycett/Nathan Vardy
2021: Max Gawn/Luke Jackson
2022: Rhys Stanley
2023: Darcy Cameron/Mason Cox

Gawn’s been great but decent ruckmen aren’t terribly hard to unearth.
Although not massive stars, McEvoy, Nank and Boyd were very good players. Boyd arguably won the Dogs that GF. Cameron is showing he's more than handy as well..I think Grundy has been one reason for Sydney's dominance this season. Also TDK for Blues has been really impressive. Xerri and Meeks rise have helped lift their teams. I think it's an important position. I don't think you can completely ignore it tbh. I like what I've seen of Verrall. Really don't rate Fullerton at all.

3 guys in the whole comp have kicked more than 40 goals. If we go and waste money and picks on a key forward I'll laugh. JVR and Fritsch is easily enough. Just get good players

Max King goes out an saints have their best inside 50 conversion of the season
Not a coincidence

Agree it's not unimportant, but most of those blokes listed were at 2nd clubs via cheapish trades (Boyd obvious exception) and/or were later picks to start with.

No need to cough up something silly for English when Verrall could do, or we flick a 3rd rounder to someone for a ready made ruck.

Also everyone of those were brought in cheap when they were ready for a crack at a flag. Don't need to waste money and picks on finding another 10 year ruck

Yep. I guess I was trying to point out that we can't have a mug in the position. Obviously dont need to overpay for someone, and Verrall is tracking OK, but the position is still an important one. That's why I think Verrall is a better option to replace Gawn for the next few weeks and not Fullarton who to me, is more of a forward/relief ruck.

Yeah I reckon chasing key forwards is only slightly more sensible than going after ‘quality ruckmen’.

Tim Membrey - delisted Free Agent/pick 46 2012 National Draft

Brody Mihocek - pick 22 2018 Rookie Draft

Aaron Naughton - pick 9 2017 National Draft

Jake Waterman - pick 77 2016 National Draft Father Son selection

Peter Wright - traded for future 4th round pick in 2020/pick 8 2014 National Draft

So, to categorise them:

High cost for trade/draft
Amiss, Cadman, Cameron (Geel), Hogan (Freo/Melb), B King, M King, Lukosious, McDonald, McKay, Naughton, Stringer (WB), Thilthorpe, Wright (GC)

Medium cost
Curnow, Dixon (PA), Fogarty, Georgiades, Henry (Coll), Lynch (GCS), Stringer (Ess), Van Rooyen

Dibs through FS, Academy, other concessions
Cameron (GWS), Dixon (GCS), Daniher (Ess), Darcy, Dear, Hawkins, Hipwood, Ugle-Hagan, Walker, Walter, Waterman

Good to excellent value
Allen, Amartey, Brown, Caminiti, Chol, Darling, Henry (Geel), Hogan (GWS), Larkey, Lefau, Lewis, Lord, Membrey, Mihocek, Neale, Riccardi, Treacy, Wright (Ess)

Free agents
Daniher, Lynch

Further here are some real busts from the last 10 years:

Jarrod Brander pick 13 2017 National Draft
Will Kelly pick 29 2018 National Draft Father Son Selection
Paddy McCartin pick 1 2014 National Draft
Josh Schache pick 2 2015 National Draft
Sam Weideman pick 9 2015 National Draft

Ultimately, we’ve already hit up the draft for JVR and Jefferson (who is finally starting to show some signs in the VFL) we’ve also brought in Kentfield. We are in desperate need for dynamic midfielders and will have a Steven May sized hole to fill in defence before too long. Throwing away huge amounts of cash and trade/draft capital for KPFs would be irresponsible imv.

Good post.

The KFF thing is interesting for us as we can theoretically fill our Steven May hole in defence if we somehow land a Waterman/Treacy type and shift Petty back to FB who I think makes a very good long term FB.

Or we just back JVR in and play a 2nd ruck/KFF who's somewhat competent so JVR doesn't have to 2nd ruck. Or play a smaller forward line.

I have my doubts with Petty he just seems to be quite fragile - ends a lot of games hobbling and every chance he seeks a trade back to SA in the future. I reckon our KPD situation is more urgent - will any of May, Petty, McDonald or Tomlinson be on the list beyond 2025?

Exactly this. Petty's best position is back, but he might not be here either.

Nothing wrong with going after a KPD regardless and then playing them alongside Petty and Lever to keep our three tall structure down there that works quite well.

Great post! Shows there's plenty of options and ways for us to get a best 22 quality key forward.

Somehow discussion has turned into giving up millions and all our picks for a gun key forward, but I haven't really seen many posters suggesting that tbh.

IMO can't keep having the revolving potato conveyor belt of Turner, Petty, Schache, Brown, Smith, especially given most of them will be gone this year. Need to pay a reasonably sensible amount for a 22-27 year old key forward who will be in our best 22 and then we can actually build consistency. Petty, if he stays, and Turner can then go back to their natural positions and we can stop the dicking around.

Should be more than enough opportunity for us to address multiple needs this offseason.

You'd think (Or at least hope) the club knows what is happening with Petty end of year. I'm assuming they'll hold him to contract as Adelaide will offer **** all with his current form. Does mean we still have to address the problem with his likely exit end of next year though.

I mean I love him, but his injury history is a massive concern and would cost us a fortune in a trade. Still, if you gave me the option of Allen or the other names that have been mentioned here like King, McDonald and JUH give me Allen every time even with his injury history.

it'll be cool, we'll just make him play injured.
