Parker scored more goals in 1 quarter than wicks did for 11 weeks. He also laid more tackles in 1.5 quarters than Wicks did in a month
Melican had the better year, though McCartin is probably unfairly judged based on how easy we made it to enter F50 for some oppo teams.

Wicks didn't deserve to come back into the team after he was dropped, and faces an uphill battle against the likes of Cleary, Hanily, Campbell who will all hopefully get plenty of opportunities up forward. However, Wicks isn't gone yet and he has been very, very good as a defensive forward in the past. We've been through all this before.

Someone mentioned in media Chad is stubborn enough to believe he can do just that.

I really don't think he's the type of bloke to give a brass razoo what the media or others think.
And tbh it's in his interest to let WC use their picks this year, and go next year when those picks are starting to come good.

The only issue for him...(and it's a fairly big one) is playing all year with no future contract tied down, and the risk of injury putting multiple millions of dollars at risk. Wonder if there's going to be a verbal deal put in place, 'come next year, we'll pay our first if it's not top 3 and we'll verbally guarantee you now $1.2 x 6
Given he came as a 2nd or 3rd rounder (can't remember) he can see that as giving us fiar return and go on his merry way.

FWIW I totally see your point in trading him now, tend to agree. But if Warner is playing this smart, then he'll probably stay put this year.

What do we get in terms of a compo pick if he goes next year when his contract runs down? Does the AFL give us a compo pick if he walks via the PSD? Where does it fall? Does it depend on his contract size?

And the stats show that pretty much to a tee. I think that McCartin is better than Melican but can see its a lot closer, they also play different roles as KPDs McCartin is very much come in and intercept as third man whereas Melican locks down and doesn't loose 1v1s. (Also think there is recency bias with McCartin having the rough matchups in the finals). But Wicks has shown in the last 12 months that he wasn't in AFL quality form and his long stretches of game logs were being beaten by 1 game by his replacement

It's clearly something we need to work on. Brisbane make spuds like Cameron and Lohman look like stars in that aspect.

Not sure Parker in the mids against North can be compared against Wicks, but he wasn't in good form yes.

Parker has had sub 20% CBA games where he has kicked 2 goals and had 2+ tackles which was something that Wicks hasn't done for 12 months. If we got Wicks of 2022 where he was averaging a bit over a goal a game, a goal assist a game and 6 tackles then he would rightfully be best 22. But he was averaging like 3 less touches, half a goal less and 4 tackles less in 2024 than his back end of 2023
 
OK, I've been doing a lot of thought here and have come up with the following scenario for a mega trade.

Richmond will need grunt and class and we need to make the most of this draft, so we trade both Gulden and Cleary for pick 1.

Norf want Parker, but they feel aggrieved about missing out on McDonald so now is the time for them to save face. We give them both Parker and McDonald for a top 5 pick. If they want us to take back Dyl Stevens then we will ask for pick 2 in return.

West Coast want Chad and they have pick 3. We ask for 13 as well.

Adelaide is next to the trade table. What they would give for a forward who kicks 9 goals? I say we bundle Amartey and Hayward for pick 4.

Adelaide is done, so who's next? Melbourne. Hmmm. They have had midfield retirements and now have a gaping hole in the middle. Enter Heeney who has a troublesome ankle and is closer to the end than the beginning of his career. We strike now while the Brownlow iron is hot and move him for the same pick as the number on his back.

Gold Coast need picks this year for their academy, so we give them 13 (see WCE) and 19 for their 6.

St Kilda. They are idiots. We give them McLean, Cunningham and Dyl Stevens for pick 7. We could have asked for a better pick but we wanted to include Stevens.

Essendon. Dodoro is no longer there so we can now get a trade done. Although they have been chasing Parker for a decade that's just tough (snoozed/loozed, etc) and they can talk to Norf. In the meantime, they need scoring power so Papley for 8 gets it done.

Fremantle need pace. Warner Jnr would be a good fit as well as Campbell for pick 9. Job done.

Finally, Collingwood. They need defenders. We have Snell and Francis waiting there so we can afford to let go of both Melican and TMac for pick 10 and a future first.

This will leave us with picks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 17 and 55 in what is supposed to be a very good draft year., and our starting lineup in 2025 will be:
Roberts, Edwards, Rampe
Mills, Francis, Blakey
Lloyd, Rowbottom, McInerney
Florent, Buller, Jordon
Hanily, Ladhams, Wicks

Grundy, Adams, Sheldrick
Int. Fox, Snell, Hamling, Mitchell Emerg. Magor

Thereby ensuring a number of future top 5 picks coming our way for the forseeable future.

Add to that the inability to realise that Campbell is a small/medium forward and not a defender
That just proves we're not geared towards aiding small forwards despite that being what the game demands these days. Wicks and Campbell don't need to adjust to the coaches gameplan to show form, the gameplan needs adjusting to help them. Our gameplan revolves around scoring midfielders, which is burning us defensively and not giving our small forwards a proper look.
 
28 goals in 48 games as a forward is absolutely terrible. (McDonalds first 3 seasons he had 56 in 44)
He is the best KPD we have
Edwards and Snell will get opportunities over Rampe and when McCartin and Melican get their yearly injury.
You don't make your cornerstones of the team flexible especially if it is just as an experiment.
When he started with us he was the youngest player in the competition. He was also recovering from an unusual condition that had affected his joints.

Things have changed.

He spent more time looking at the sky than chasing Lions players for 3 quarters on saturday .
 
Geelong and hawks strengthen , watch oliver get back to best. Smith is only 23 remember

Hawks will be dangerous if scily goes up front more often
Hawks yes, that's what you can do more easily when a) you've been out of finals for 5 years, b) are a Vic team, c) have cap space because of a and b.

Cats maybe, could be a Taranto and Hopper to Richmond situation.
 
Because we have to make room for either Edwards and or Snell to develop and prepare for the retirement or injury of Rampe. We also need to develop more flexibility in the side and keep opponents guessing as a general strategy because we are totally predictable and when our normal tall forwards are not performing we need another option.

Besides McCartin started with us as a forward and wasn't bad at all. He would be a lot better at it now.

No he wouldn’t. He couldn’t kick up there are you seriously telling me he can now? We aren’t moving one of our best two defenders to fit two rookies in neither of which are near ready
