From HSun:

“Some clubs believe Sydney Swans Academy defender Joel Cochran could attract a bid anywhere from pick 25 onwards, with one scout saying the Swans had done “a good job of hiding him away”.
Cochran won the 2km time trial at the national draft combine last month.”

WHITLOCK TWINS BULK UP BEAUTIFULLY

When they haven’t been on a football field this year, twin brothers Jack and Matt Whitlock could be found in a gym.
The athletic talls have been pumping iron together and downing protein shakes in a bid to add some more muscle to their big frames.
Working with a dietitian, both have added up to 10kg since last year.
“I took a pretty big emphasis on gaining weight this year,” Jack said.
“I’ve definitely hopped on the protein supplements. Then we have chickens at home so I’ve had lot of scrambled eggs every night, pretty much.”

The pair have spent little time apart growing up, but are prepared to be split in different directions in this draft.
“We’re ready for that. That’s probably going to be the reality,” Jack said.
“It might be better,” Matt added.
“You don’t really want to live with your brother your whole life.”

So the Chad insta post was a prelude to...... nothing?

I get that it's the social team's job to drive engagement but if they'd gone with Heeney first they wouldn't have got everyone's hopes up.

Also why just those 2? Would you include Gulden and Lizard as our AAs at minimum?

Yeah I'm getting worked up over a dumb social media post but it's he off-season after all.

I agree. We have a very soft underbelly and often wilt under pressure, whether that's from teams like Tigers to the very best like Brisbane.
Yep the warning game for me was the Tigers loss at the G.
An uninvested player like Baker tore us to shreds with a half hearted effort.
The other one was the Saints.
Front running finger twirling specialists some of our star players have become but none of them have the grit to instigate a fight back of any sort when the opposition take things away from us.
Absolutely NO response.

Happy to trade the Lizard to North if it gets us what we want.
Having watched the GF replay, what he dished out on GF day was less than what some much maligned players like Towers, Clarke & other “list cloggers” have given us over the years.
Sorry but I just don’t get the hype with this fellow.

I think they'll trickle out player posts until the draft. The Lizards and Gulden will get their turn

He was very poor. I think it was Ashcroft, who is essentially still a first year player, who brushed him off as if he didn't exist. Was just so half arsed. But then I think of his effort to single handedly win us the game against Freo which gives me hope.

Use that game against Freo to entice North into good picks because his GF game will make his trade value plummet.

Actually we lost the game against Freo but he was excellent.

I'd trade him for LDU, Larkey or Sheezel but doubt any of this would eventuate. Wouldn't bother for picks - draft is a lottery and we bugger up our first rounders more often than not. So he of course stays and hopefully just gets better and brings his best to the big games in the future.

If another team calls his name out, you have to take him. Otherwise rookie him.

To get invited to the AFL combine, you have to be nominated by 3 clubs (AFAIK). Other clubs noticed him.

I watched his first champs game. He was rubbish. All at sea. Then I watched his second game. He made mistakes, but you could see why clubs nominated him. His acceleration stood out.

This kid was kicking 40m flat drop punt passes on his left foot at 12. There were very few kids I knew growing up who could do that. All the players I knew who could do this, played in the AFL.

He's not really a footballer. They didn't really teach him how to play football at the academy. They played him in a whole heap of positions, seemingly to win games of footy. He's 6'6 or thereabouts, with a slight frame. He has no idea how to use his body in a marking contest. So the options are, build his frame and play him as a KPD in the twos and see if he has an appetite to dominate KPF's, or play him as a line breaking outside HBF or winger. Just settle him in a position and see what he can do.

You can teach a kid to play football, but you can't teach a kid run faster and jump higher. He has something most other players will never have. That's why you have to take him.

Thanks, Ruben, appreciate the reply.

You have given your opinion about the question I'm asking ("If another team calls his name out, you have to take him") but I'm not really convinced by your reasoning.

Basically, I feel like there are plenty of promising players who will be available at this pick and Cochran may not be the most promising.

Do you think I was trying to sell him to you? I just told you who he is as a footballer. Strengths, weaknesses.

Why are you talking about what you need right now? What do you think you're going to get with pick 60 or an RD pick? The missing flag piece?

He's not really a tall defender - they've been playing him everywhere. Maybe they thought they could get a kid who's not really from a footy background, and never really played against proper footballers, and just give him a taste of everything like he's a new uni-grad hire?

The guy has elite athletic ability. Wouldn't be ready for 3 years, if at all. But given it's unlikely any RD pick is going to be good enough to crack the Swans line up anytime soon, it doesn't matter if you have a project player.

Your boys just didn't turn up on the day. They were the best team all year. You don't need to make wholesale changes except working out how you're going to replace Warner.

This is where I disagree with you. I think that there will be good players available with this pick (which is not to say we will pick them accurately) and that it is not meaningless whether we pick one player or another.

We have an excellent track record of picking players late (esp. including the rookie draft).

We have picked players in the RD who have "cracked" our senior line up straight away - Dane Rampe and Tom Papley are two examples of such players. Jake Lloyd also debuted early in his first season after being taken in the rookie draft.

However, if we take another player it doesn't have to be because we expect them to play seniors immediately - they could be a different project player who we rate more highly for one reason or another. Or they might be a better fit for our needs.

Our rookie draft strike rate has been very ordinary in recent years, the guys you listed were drafted 10 years ago

The last player we took in the rookie draft in the current team is Amartey from 2017. Recent picks in the RD have been failures.

I have to defend him here, because I like Blakey and think he is a very good player, and one of the absolute last that I would trade.

I do agree that he is overrated. I think him, Gulden & Warner are players that are given the '8 out of 10' license. Trusted with trying things that they will stuff up a few times, but they pull off about 8 out of 10 times.

The problem is this year I reckon they went at a rate of 5 out of 10.

Brilliant at times, absolute liabilities at other times.

Gulden I have the most time for because he just has an exceptional work rate and does so much unseen stuff for us in games.

I mean he is 28 why are we bringing in someone who has not averaged more than 10 disposals a game.

I would rather back Corey Warner in

I'd like Corey Warner to be brought back in as a HFF too but I see some depth value in Cuningham. He's not going to be what stops us from winning a flag but depth is a good thing.

Blakey I think has the tools to be an excellent defender. His rebounding is obviously very good, but I think he's probably at the front of the line for those who need to pull their heads in defensively. It's all well and good to attack at will but he's got the height, versatility, athleticism, intercepting ability, speed that he could dominate a game defensively if he wanted to. If he really wants to do it, he can be the most impactful defender (not rebounder) in the comp, I genuinely believe that. I actually think in a way he needs to come out from Rampe's shadow. Rampe is still the general of that defence and Blakey needs to assume that mantle and take greater responsibility for the whole functioning of the defence for him to ascend fully IMO.

As for Gulden, his work rate on GF day was so far below what he normally brings that it seems something psychological is at play. Whether he wilted under the pressure or whatever it was, there were times watching him that I couldn't believe I was watching the same guy who motors around from the full back line to the full forward line at will throughout the year.

I personally would rather some posts about Lloyd, Cunningham, Melican, etc. The guys who were just as important in getting us to a GF but who we didn't hear about non stop all ****ing year.
