I'm not saying we shouldn't outright. And I come from a place where I don't think anyone has been more vocal about drafting KPPs in recent years, for the reasons you mention.

But, if we bring in a KPF, a KPD and Cochran, even with an injury or two, and an emergency occasionally not playing, we've got quite a tall reserves team.

If we decide to not play our tall emergencies and if we get some injuries, bound to happen, we can probably make it work. You just don't want to be in a position where you're stifling development (by gametime in preferred position or by getting flogged) because there's too many talls to fit in at either end.

If we think there's a gun KPD available at a pick, sure, go for it, and just make it work. Otherwise you could look at a mature ager next year. Relying on trades isn't realistic.

Part of it also depends on whether we change forward structure. If we go to 2 KPFs, then maybe we stick with the 4 we have on the list, focus on drafting some medium types (187-192cm). That then gives you space to play someone up forward in the VFL (keep Hamling there, rotate Francis etc) and bring in another KPD without sacrificing development.

I don't think it is the amount of tall forwards that is the problem. I think it is the way;

1. We structure up forward. The talks tend to be bunched, not spread. Our good receiving forwards stat too close to goal. When we do spread & therefore spread their backs the opposition has to be accountable as a team & every player individually. Unfortunately, we do not spread them often enough. Therefore having to rely on mids & small forwards

2. Some of our delivery forward last season was shocking. While we have some of the best kicks in the AFL they & their lesser known teammates butchered the ball on more occasions than not. The leading forwards must have been frustrated.

3. Stop ignoring good leads in favour of the long bomb. I know this is Horse's fav kick but bloody hell what a aate of a potentially good move forward.

4. Stop being a one trick pony BB all movement team. Everyone knows we just head into the centre. We were picked off time & again GF day & nobody woke up & decided to run the BBC all, spread & receive.

I think we can play another small/medium forward on the bench. One medium back & two mids. Rotate a small fur a tall.

I don't know what is happening with Robby Fox. He was played forward, back, wing, even on ball at times. He must have been frustrated having to change positions mid match nearly every match. He could not get any continuity. I like him back as a foil for Harry. I do not like Campbell back. It totally wastes his unique skill set. He is an attacking weapon & he needs to be encouraged to shoot those 60 metre bombs through the hi diddle diddle.

I would also think about rotating Blakey through the mids. He could be that Bont like player.

The consensus scenario



We all have different priorities, or at least their order. So I had another think about a plausible set of picks that covers everything, specifically some of the traits we need out of small forwards, mids and KPFs. At least I assume no-one is out there asking for a half back, winger or rucks. And this also assumes we match Cochran either late or rookie.

KPD - Matt Whitlock can play either end, but probably favours defence. Long term prospect to fit behind Edwards, Snell. May play forward when we have surplus defenders at VFL level in 2025, but he wouldn't be the first KPD for us to start up front. Might even stay there.

Small forward - Hannaford kicked 6 in a Coates quarter final, after a haul of 5 a few weeks before, and is known for defensive pressure. Hargrave can also be a threat up forward.

Midfield - Hargrave is a no-nonsense inside mid who kicks goals. Shared the SANFL U18s B&F, having played just 9 games there, plus 6 senior league appearances. Urquhart is another inside mid who can kick a goal, might get snapped up earlier. Similar with Kennedy, though we are keen, the rumour is Saints are looking to pounce (courtesy of big fan Bedders), maybe with that pick in the 30s.

KPF / Med Fwd - While Whitlock might impress and we leave him there, we probably do need to grab another target up front. Contested marking has let us down, and this is West's strength, though on the slightly smaller side at 194cm. However, we're also in the market for a medium forward, and while he's in the KPF height range, he is quick and likes a 2nd effort. Could be a value pick if he survives until the end of the draft. Has even done some rucking.

Small Defender - No I haven't forgotten. We could go Loch MacTaggart as I've previously mentioned in various scenarios, via the rookie draft, but it's worth noting that Hannaford has played a considerable amount of time down back, before moving forward more to bolt up the board. This was both off half back and as a lockdown type. While he'll play up forward, it might be a way to get him into the game more at VFL level if we're mediocre again, and then who knows, we might have a Cunningham replacement.

Rookie - I've just listed 3 mature age mids who are likely available here, though Murphy might be gone. I don't really have any special knowledge about Ryan or Frost (former GWS academy), but they are prolific in tackles and clearances, making the SANFL team of the year, at 20 and 22 years old respectively. Wouldn't surprise if one of them got picked up, and they might be able to impact sooner than any of the other draftees.

Good effort putting that together only thing I don’t love is Matt first up we need a forward more there’s a few in that range. We don’t need to do this Hamling forward thing in the VFL again

We need a contested marking forward, which West is, and it'd be Sims or Gerreyn for that earlier.

My point to this was to try and address consensus needs. If I went a KPF and KPD first up, I'd have you and others complaining about no small forward in the 1st round.

Also can't be confident of any of the touted KPDs being available late. Maybe Dennis but probably not.

If we move to 2 KPFs then an addition becomes less critical.

Also couldn't fit every need in 5 picks, so have tried to cover potentially 3 bases with Whitlock and West (KPF/tall medium).
