The consensus scenario

View attachment 2163972

We all have different priorities, or at least their order. So I had another think about a plausible set of picks that covers everything, specifically some of the traits we need out of small forwards, mids and KPFs. At least I assume no-one is out there asking for a half back, winger or rucks. And this also assumes we match Cochran either late or rookie.

KPD - Matt Whitlock can play either end, but probably favours defence. Long term prospect to fit behind Edwards, Snell. May play forward when we have surplus defenders at VFL level in 2025, but he wouldn't be the first KPD for us to start up front. Might even stay there.

Small forward - Hannaford kicked 6 in a Coates quarter final, after a haul of 5 a few weeks before, and is known for defensive pressure. Hargrave can also be a threat up forward.

Midfield - Hargrave is a no-nonsense inside mid who kicks goals. Shared the SANFL U18s B&F, having played just 9 games there, plus 6 senior league appearances. Urquhart is another inside mid who can kick a goal, might get snapped up earlier. Similar with Kennedy, though we are keen, the rumour is Saints are looking to pounce (courtesy of big fan Bedders), maybe with that pick in the 30s.

KPF / Med Fwd - While Whitlock might impress and we leave him there, we probably do need to grab another target up front. Contested marking has let us down, and this is West's strength, though on the slightly smaller side at 194cm. However, we're also in the market for a medium forward, and while he's in the KPF height range, he is quick and likes a 2nd effort. Could be a value pick if he survives until the end of the draft. Has even done some rucking.

Small Defender - No I haven't forgotten. We could go Loch MacTaggart as I've previously mentioned in various scenarios, via the rookie draft, but it's worth noting that Hannaford has played a considerable amount of time down back, before moving forward more to bolt up the board. This was both off half back and as a lockdown type. While he'll play up forward, it might be a way to get him into the game more at VFL level if we're mediocre again, and then who knows, we might have a Cunningham replacement.

Rookie - I've just listed 3 mature age mids who are likely available here, though Murphy might be gone. I don't really have any special knowledge about Ryan or Frost (former GWS academy), but they are prolific in tackles and clearances, making the SANFL team of the year, at 20 and 22 years old respectively. Wouldn't surprise if one of them got picked up, and they might be able to impact sooner than any of the other draftees.

Bias Note: I've gone from 3 Claremont players, to 3 SA players.
Terrific post trying to amalgamate all the different opinions.
I'm 100% in line with the type of the first two picks. Hadn't thought so much of Hannaford but he would be OK.
Third pick is an interesting one. Inside or outside? Agree that consensus seems to be inside or hybrid but with Sheldrick and Cleary next up and Mitchell trialling in defence perhaps an outside mid/winger would not be an outrageous call.
I wonder if McCartin 3.0 or Lloyd 2.0 are on the cards or young Harrison from the Academy in the Rookie Draft.

Take out the KPD one and I agree. Would look for a wing or a small defender personally
I think we do actually need another KPD, it'll just be a nightmare in getting them VFL gametime next year. I'm still aiming for consensus too. Peterson at 193cm, could play on some medium types.

Hannaford could be given a go down back in VFL, given he's played lockdown small defender too.

Otherwise, Loch MacTaggart is pretty much the only specific option late/rookie, maybe Mitch Kirkwood-Scott could improve one-on-one.

We have a couple of outside / half fwd types via the academy next year.

I think with Gulden and Jmac, supported by Florent, Lloyd (short term), Chad we've got quality outside. I think Campbell's confidence would grow if played off half forward which could translate into being more noticeable on the wing.

Good call.
Chamberlain and King. Chad hopefully more than just 2025. Corey maybe as well, even as depth.

What???

Sorry, but I can assure you, Gerryn is not "ultra slow".

As far as rucks go, he's actually pretty agile.

Well he sure aint quick and he's one dimensional, no thanks

If we draft one, we can't redraft BOTH Francis and Hamling. Not against it in isolation but if we do we have to make hard calls with the re rookie of those two.

I don't think we renege on our commitment to them, that's just not on. Especially Hamling.

Personally I'd have just delisted Francis outright, but depends on how ready Snell and Edwards are.

Not an unlikely scenario that 2 of Rampe, Melican or Tmac have issues at the same time. We might be able to patch things up with Hamling and Fox against some opponents, but we're just in an awkward place with Edwards, Snell probably not being ready.

If we were rebuilding, then you could afford to just throw caution to the wind.

I'd say Snell will be ready next year, I agree on the other ones though, but we could always play Hamiling as a defender rather than wasting him forward.

Just a hunch but I could see us trying Snell as a forward next year.

Yeah why not, we seem to love to draft a defender or trade in one and play him out of position lol

Well Horse has played Mills out of position most of his career so it's on point with his thinking

So when do you expect the Whitlocks would be actually be ready to play? It’ll be 2 years from what I’ve seen

Jack will be ready a bit earlier for me, but will he even be at our pick, it's a push

Hamling and Snell straight swap?

I could see it tbh. I think the club will want a strong athletic tall forward. Snell fits that bill and desperate times call for desperate measures...

Not saying it's what I want or what I would do. Just something I could see happening.

Supposedly they spent a lot of time in the gym and added about 10kg each. Jack looks a little bigger. Both attack the ball in the air. We started Logan straight away but there was an element of desperation in that. Maybe first game 2026 for the forward, later for the defender to do another preseason, maybe even 2.
Edwards is already that big.

Why not just draft a forward? This playing blokes out of position is so Horse...it rarely works. It's like going to the roulette wheel and having 50 chips and putting every chip on the 00 every time. Once it will come off and you'll look like a millionaire pity the other 49 times are putrid.

Snell is just as big too, really rate Snell think he could be our next top line defender.
