I tgink our management of our key defensive positions have been mismanaged. We have battled on with Rampe, Melican and the McCartins with a litany of failed picks, trades and arrested development.

Maibaum, Brand, Pink, Gould and Arnold all did not make it. Francis and Hamling clearly not up to the standard beyond depth. Edwards is now coming up to his 3rd year on the list - is he any closer to being good enough for a game? Snell promising but didn't exactly tear up a game in the VFL last year. The fact we re-signed Francis shows the club is not exactly confident Edwards or Snell are good enough for 2025. I also don't think Cochran is suited to play key defence (certainly at this stage) with him more likely playing as a medium rebound / intercept defender or even wing.

On top of the above, there are question marks on Rampe (age), Melican (injury) and McCartin (concussion) moving forward.

So should we draft a key defender? On face value, I would say a definite yes. However, we have kinda snookered ourselves having agreed to keep on Hamling and Francis. If we take a key defender, he will have to share VFL time with up to 4 other key position players. Horse has also shown in the event of injury in firsts, he prefers to make Blakey, Fox and even Logan play as a tall defender.

I have been exploring videos of players at the lower end of the draft and found this gem of a screamer by Ned Bowman. Its up there with Heeney's mark in the finals. May not be a bad pick up at the lower end.

Enjoy.

Is he a lightly built outside mid with a below average contested possession %?

If so, we’ll probably use our first selection on him

Jonty Faull and Jesse Dattoli have been consistently linked to the Swans

Swans are fans of Dandenong Stingrays duo Noah Mraz and Cooper Hynes

Swans have also shown interest in speedy goalsneak Ollie Hannaford and midfielder Tom Gross

Sydney have also done their homework on NGA key defenders Adrian Cole – tied to St Kilda – and Riak Andrew (Melbourne), who is the brother of Gold Coast’s Mac

Small defender Blake Leidler, who finished second in the state combine 20m sprint, will be in consideration later on or as a rookie

So, to summarize, Swans have shown interest in everybody?

They missed a few players.

If there are are any small skinny half back flank/wing types that have never had much impact at junior level but are great athletes and are ready to do a solid couple of years averaging 12 disposals in the reserves ... we are interested in all of them.

We have way, way more than 2 needs - Small defender, KPD, small forward, medium forward and a ticker....

Don’t need KPD and we have one coming in. We don’t need 2 KPD in one draft. Key forward is our need then SF, maybe a medium. Would also consider a genuine wingman.

Outside Dattoli, happy with the types mentioned here. Leidler if he's potentially an actual defender.

KPD maybe later in draft though. Hannaford and Gross help in mids, but probably need another, especially if we go Hannaford.

Like most of them aside from you know who. Love the interest in Hannaford it's him or Dattoli at one of those picks.

Now watch us take two smalls just to trigger everyone here lol
