Some players are slow burn types - recall back in 2017 many scoffed at the suggestion that McCluggage was better than McGrath. Petracca didn't come good until a year or two ago. From memory Hodge was as well while Judd was a gun from the get go
Ummmm… I believe you’ve got that narrative back to front.

Most people wondered wtf Essendon were doing, drafting McGrath at number 1.

McCluggage was always considered the number one prospect.

Not with many on BF. Started a McGrath V McCluggage thread in 2017 and initially it was a landslide for McGrath. A few laughed at the mere suggestion. Hugh did catch up though and surpass McGrath

Doesn't Ashcroft look like an absolute gun mid? Has all the intangibles a good midfielder needs to possess. Really hope he decides to join us as he is exactly what we need!
Really does look like the A grade all round midfielder with the ability to run defensively we need, how soon he’ll be able to produce that level is to be seen though. Think we can all agree he nominates us, unfortunately I don’t think we’ll be signing him to a two year extension two months before the draft though.

Wouldn’t be surprised at all if we did actually, or with the promise of a new contract within a couple of months.
Pretty much what happened with Cam Rayner.

Maybe behind closed doors, I think we'll be on edge until after the season though.

Look at options atm I know only 5 games in but you would have to have big Kahaoonas not to nominate us .

Suns
Adelaide
Gws
Port
West coast
Kangers all in the bottom half . Probably think it’s a tie between north and suns for wooden spoon . Would make perfect sense . Only big Melbourne club I can see being a chance of spoon is Essendon .

Things are looking rosy for Ashcroft atm . Would think a father like figure like fagan and plenty of young talent would be enough to convince him his future is at Brisbane . Anyone know where Marcus Ashcroft works any chance we could ever get him back to lions in some capacity ?

Its too early to make any calls on Rayner so far. He is improving. In 2019/2020 there were times when he was getting only single digit disposal numbers and his ToG was around the high 60%s. He is still building his ToG. Visually he is remaining involved throughout the game, running leads and getting ignored for Daniher/McStay/Cameron/McCarthy. Compare this to his debut season where we seemed to be targeting him almost as a third KPF. If Rayner can develop into a Petracca then that would be fantastic but maybe unlikely. If he can develop into a De Goey spending 70% time in the forward line kicking 2 goals average and then collecting 15-20 odd disposals going into the odd centre bounce then that is more than enough.

I personally think draft strategy is only one third of the picture. Trading is very important but general skills/player development is equally just as important. The fact that we were able to turn around injured and stalled players like McCarthy, Adams, Cockatoo, Daniher etc shows we can extract a lot more value out of any draft or trade proposition than could be expected. Fleecing a team at the trade table or manipulating draft position with future picks is gravy but I dont think it can compare to having a fantastic development program to extract maximum value from players. Compare Suns with their multitudes of 1st round picks who have had mediocre careers.

Are there any AFL rules relating to inducing a F/S draftee with a contract extension prior to the Draft?

Nope.

The club has signed Daicos for a four-year deal, which includes two for his standard first contract, which is not unusual for players who commit to clubs as draftees, with father-sons Joe Daniher (Essendon) and Nick Blakey (Sydney) others who have agreed to longer deals when nominating.

:eek:Earliest mock draft I have ever seen, love it and thanks PMBangers

lol why sad mr PMBangers? You’re not a Carlton fan.

It’s like Melbourne drafting Jackson to pair with Gawn. Carlton will just end up annihilating everyone at ruck contests in three years time, playing two quality rucks.

Just want to see my ex-GWS boys win something

You didn't really.

Fremantle.
West Coast.
Port.
Adelaide.

All have ex-GWS players on their list, and Fremantle has more than most Victorian clubs..

Brisbane and Sydney have ex-GWS academy players.

Gold Coast had an ex-GWS player last year.

Interesting to hear Mike Whiting and Dom Fay be pretty certain that Will Ashcroft will nominate for us, would think they may have some inside word saying the club is pretty confident he’ll be here.
