According to the current draft order list, that's stretching things a bit. Take Hawthorn and Bulldogs out of the mix, because they need their later picks for their own father son kids, there's genuinely only two teams who could offer Gold Coast a significant trade for a points upgrade, Brisbane and Essendon.

And Brisbane has more picks worth more points than Essendon if it became a genuine auction.
You follow draft closely so you would know. Not me, just stating what media mentioned. It does not look like Lions are the only option for Suns. I would expect teams could do multiple pick trades together.

FWIW, this is latest from Twomey on Suns. He usually has good inside info before draft. I am sure you will have fun next 2 days. Enjoy.

Pick 24 is set to head to Brisbane for picks 30 and 39, while Fremantle will pick up one of the Suns' second-round selections (38) in exchange for other third-rounders. St Kilda, too, is looking to swoop on pick 27 using multiple picks in the 40s.

I get the idea of paying premium when its at the top end. For example jumping from 12 to 6 etc. By 20s the draft is shallow and pretty speculative already so the market should even out rather than someone paying premium at that level too. That's my thinking.

The other aspect I think is Suns having to get the trade out of the way in the first few minutes before you match Walter or else that 24 will be gone. Expecting a more even trade, but will be very surprised if we're giving up 30 and 39 without getting anything back other than 24.
I don't believe the draft is that shallow. It lacks midfield and KPF (depends what you look for in your KPF) depth through the second round, but there should be a lot of decent small forwards, flankers and half backs available right through the 20's and 30's.

Trading up to 24, we can't be 100% sure who will be available at our first pick.

That's not multiple teams jockeying for pick 24.

That's Twomey saying what potential trades are in place.

Fremantle don't have the picks to get up in to the 20's without sacrificing all their picks for one. 34, 46, 60, 63, 74.

Not sure what Twomey is on about in regards to St Kilda. 13, 21, 40, 77, 82, 86. They don't have the picks to trade up.

Finally got around to reading Twomey’s phantom draft.

If things played out like that, there will be some decent options at our first pick.

Obviously Archer Reid as a real needs based pick. But there’s a few kids I rate rather highly.

Archie Roberts, half back from Sandringham.

Joel Freijah, winger from our neck of the woods (aka GWV Rebels).

Luamon Lual, another exciting half back.

Jack Delean, medium forward from SA.

Just realised Twomey didn’t mention Ollie Murphy. That’d be a hell of a slide for a player most rated as a top 15 prospect.

Where are you living?

Us trading to 24 has put my Freijah hopes to an end.

Hopefully one of our later picks we use on My other man Maley

lol Brisbane.

When I said "our neck of the woods", I meant the Lions propensity to draft Rebels boys.

There's still a few scenario's where Freijah is the best available & needs fit at our first pick.

Yeah true. All depends on who we are targeting and if they will be there. I am just holding out hope when I speak to him on Wednesday morning I am congratulating him on becoming a Lion.

Don't forget there are two end of round 1 PP's already in next years draft, so end of round 2 is currently pick 38.

We have later picks as well. The current AFL website draft order has us with 5 picks for the national draft. So we can take 5 picks to the draft, offer Gold Coast picks 30, 39 & 54. Keep 51 for our second pick and 67 for upgrading Carter Michael.
Thanks Briztoon for sharing your insight into this draft stuff - much appreciated.

If Hardeman or De Mattia is available at pick 24 (provided that pick trade goes through) then it will be interesting to see if we still go with Archer Reid.

I’m still a bit torn as to whether we should be taking Mitch Edwards. I just think that’s the ruck position sorted for 10 years if we do. And his contested marking is elite so he would be very dangerous forward. His ruck work has the potential to change games too.

It depends how good we think Gillett will be.

Zane Zakostelskey has all the tools to be a great defender but his disposal really lets him down. If we think he could tidy that up then don’t mind that option too.
I agree with Mitch Edwards. I think he’s Daniher’s replacement in about 3 years.

I plagiarise off the best.

Honestly, take most of what I say about the kids with a huge dose of skepticism. I don't watch much outside the Championships and academy games.

I keep looking at 30 and 39 and struggle to see the sense of it, if we're taking all 5 picks to the draft.

If we're taking 4 picks, and only planning on using 3, there's some sense to it.

We might have a second trade in the works. After the first bid on Jed Walter, we could package 51, 54 and 67 and send them to Gold Coast for pick 36 and an end of draft pick. It's a ~50 point upgrade for Gold Coast, with the potential to increase, if GC are trading a couple of the their 30's picks for bulk later picks.

Hope for a combination of Archer Reid and Ollie Murphy.

Is anyone aware of why the slide for Murphy?

I don’t know one kid from the next in the draft but I hope in about 1-2 years time we’ll be saying out recruiters nailed the draft with the hand it had. I reckon we’ve been pretty hit and miss in recent years but with picks in possibly the 20’s and then one in the 30’s we’re pretty restricted.

I assume we only take two kids with Carter Michael also being taken as a formality with our last pick if that’s how it works?

You don't even have to wait 1-2 years. Our recruiters will be saying it in a couple of nights, same as every other club. ;)

We really should set up a bingo with "I can't believe we got him at that pick", etc.

I'm heading to the Vic draft night tomorrow night, so I'd completely forgotten there's a Round 1 tonight.
So I am assuming that even if we trade up to 24 that our first pick won’t be until tomorrow night?

As we are trading 30 and 39 it will be a long time between picks so enjoy the drinks, waiting for our second pick. 2hrs after our first.:)
