So according to Twomey, potentially, Archer Reid (a forward) Sam Van Rooyen (a forward) together with Brandon Ryan during trade period
Somehow I don't think so. We usually have a very balanced approach to our drafting.

Wouldn’t totally shock me if we go down that road. It’s our area of most need and forwards can always be swung back in a lot of instances to become more than capable defenders.

Couple that with the fact we know we’ve got at least two midfielders coming in the draft next year so if we can address the biggest need area in one draft, hoping one at least makes it (given where we are picking in this draft), I say go for it. If we rate them at those picks of course!

Twomey reports pick 30 and 39 for pick 24 which leaves us crumbs in later round picks.

If we trade 30 and 39 for 24, we sure as **** better be getting our future second round pick back, or I’ll be lambasting our recruiting team again.

We picked 2 midfielders in the top 12 last year and a small defender and small forward in the first round in 2021. We haven't picked a genuine tall in the top 40 selections since Schache and Hipwood in 2015.

Doubling up on young talls is very logical, we can't keep picking them off via trade/FA indefinitely.

Sadly Twomey has my 2 hopeful recruits going before we get a selection, he has Phoenix Gothard going to the Giants at pick 21 and Wil Dawson going to the Saints at pick 28.:( Not giving up hope though.

If we get pick 24 off the Suns we may still be able to grab 1 of them.

Interestingly Twomey also said we have shown interest in Sam Van Rooyen who will almost certainly be available at either of our first 2 selections.
That pick 24 from the Suns would be pick 31 in Twomey’s phantom draft, as pick 30 was West Coast’s beginning of round two pick.

Not knowing anything about the draft class at all, maybe trading those two picks for 24 makes sense if it was a live trade while hypothetically Gold Coast was on the clock at 24 and we wanted a specific player that was better than everyone left on our board by a fair distance.

Of course, we know that won't be the case because GC will never make that pick, and the trade will go through in the first few minutes of the first round as GC want additional points and will need them early. Have to be getting something else back for it to make sense.

That strategy may be valid if we didn't have Gillett and Hewitt coming through next year.

Gillett might be a Archie Reid type, but I would temper any expectations of Hewitt until we see how he goes in the NAB League next year.

I’m really hoping Billy Richardson comes back as an overager with the academy next year.

Finally got around to reading Twomey’s phantom draft.

If things played out like that, there will be some decent options at our first pick.

Obviously Archer Reid as a real needs based pick. But there’s a few kids I rate rather highly.

Archie Roberts, half back from Sandringham.

Joel Freijah, winger from our neck of the woods (aka GWV Rebels).

Luamon Lual, another exciting half back.

Jack Delean, medium forward from SA.

Just realised Twomey didn’t mention Ollie Murphy. That’d be a hell of a slide for a player most rated as a top 15 prospect.

the player that interests me the most is george stevens but he is probably as far away as a need for us as you can get. looks like he has great footy iq and skills, but most seem to be questioning his athletic traits..... think he could be a dunkley type defensive mid wherever he lands if he develops well
189cm and 101kg.

And there looks to be very little actual body fat on him.

He’s a bigger version of Jarryd Lyons, except he can kick the ball 60m.

you would think he would have to lose some mass after being drafted, whether it be fat or muscle. most mids are around 1kg of body weight per cm over 1m, with about 5kg over that tending to be the upper limit. 101kg on an 189cm frame is arguably way too much weight to be carrying as an inside mid - cripps would probably be the heaviest mid in the afl and he weighs in at 93kg on an 195cm frame.

one of the things i find most interesting about stevens is if he can be as strong with his contested game, whilst benefitting from a bit of extra pace if he loses some of his weight. he reads the play well and has good skills on the outside for a clearance specialist, so if he can cover the ground a bit better he should be able to show those abilities more often

I don't normally pay much attention to anything re the draft on Fox Sports, but I didn't mind what I read re Brisbane in the article quoted earlier (Fox Sports Phantom Draft) given that a few of the names mentioned were among those I had made a note of re. choices for Brisbane as well.

With only "late" picks in this draft (excluding the suggested trade up to 24), I didn't focus much on the fancied names, just those that caught my eye and might still be around from mid to late 2nd round onwards. And my focus was on what I saw as needs, Talls, Small fwds and GENUINE PACE, whilst not forgetting my every year favourites, "pure footballers" (especially those that seem to have a knock on them for lack of speed, height etc, but they can still find the footy and use it well).

I look at Nat. Champs, Coates League and State League finals, and then any other vision as time permits (who am I kidding ..... I have endless time these days ....... albeit I am way closer to the end than the beginning :)).

Through the Champs, my "list" of prospects included Leake, Windsor, Hardeman, DeMattia, Gothard, who have all firmed inside our range, according to Twomey, and Dawson who he has borderline. (Twomey's Phantom Draft)

But Fox have us linked to Sanchez, Schoenmaker, & Zakostelsky who were also on my list, and available according to Twomey, hence why I "liked" their article. Hopefully one (and maybe even two) are possibilities (depending on whether or not we trade up to 24)

Zakostelsky I particularly like around our picks, as he fills a need, has lots of development potential, and IMO could be anything (and possibly play anywhere). He caught my eye as an intercept defender in the last two Champ games for WA, and then as a Ruckman in the WA Colts Grand Final (BOG), although I don't see him as a Ruck at AFL level (but could be a stop-gap).
Sanchez just "has something about him" and could suit as a small fwd option, and Schoenmaker is a big lad who could potentially be a defender if needed, but I like as an option for the Wing who could be that "metres gained" type of guy we need in that position.

There is potential for a late, late pick as well as the Michael upgrade, and if not I enjoy looking for one anyway.

I'm still looking at video, although time is running out. I went back through my notes, and from the Coates League GF, I had noted down a guy called Tyson Sruk, so I went back and re-watched, and this is what I found ..... (sorry about the quality, I tried new capture software but I don't like the result).

Some detail: He (#23 White Strip) played the majority of the match one on one with Levi Ashcroft (even when Levi went forward). You can see this in most of the clips, but the interesting thing is how much space he seems to put between himself and Levi when his team gets possession (to good effect for his side) and also how much up and down running he did (well maybe not in the clips, but I did going through the video). This was also the least effective I had seen Levi in games this season. So not surprising Sruk was named as GF BOG for Eastern Ranges.

Grand Final Stats - 37 disposals, 8 clearances, 9 inside 50s ( not bad for flat 25min Qtrs)

Love these hard at it, go all day blokes.

Sorry for the long winded post ..... but I had nothing else to do.

Another I don't mind as a wing possibility:
Tarkyn O'Leary - plenty of speed and endurance (won the Combine Time trial - he might be coming for you Sharpie!).
And is a good user of the ball and not afraid of the physical stuff)

I like this idea actually. If it's a shallow draft, let's load up on talls to see if we get a hit on 1 or 2. Helps us find a third tall and replace Daniher eventually. They take time to develop and it's a good investment based on where the list is currently at.

It'll look similar to our last rebuild where Andrews / Hipwood walked in first around 2014 2015 and then we started adding mids, wing and role players around them in the next 2-3 drafts.

No guarantee of getting them if 2 of Gillett, Hewitt, Marshall end up pushing into top 20.

We have an academy limit of taking only one player in top 20 if we finish top 4.

If two of them make the top 20, full credit to the kid. But they'd have to make it solidly into the top 20 because you see academy kids slide a bit if clubs know they're not just bidding to eat up points and they'll actually get the kid.

Marshall making the national academy is a decent predictor, the other guys are very much a wait and see.

Sanchez would be the perfect like for like replacement for Linc. Plays in such a similar style.

Great post. I really like the look of Sruk as well. Haven’t heard anyone mention him yet though so could come cheap.

If Hardeman or De Mattia is available at pick 24 (provided that pick trade goes through) then it will be interesting to see if we still go with Archer Reid.

I’m still a bit torn as to whether we should be taking Mitch Edwards. I just think that’s the ruck position sorted for 10 years if we do. And his contested marking is elite so he would be very dangerous forward. His ruck work has the potential to change games too.

It depends how good we think Gillett will be.

Zane Zakostelskey has all the tools to be a great defender but his disposal really lets him down. If we think he could tidy that up then don’t mind that option too.

Yeah I'm thinking we'll get F2 back. Otherwise it doesn't look right.
Obviously, I could be completely wrong, but I would be surprised mainly due to supply. According to media there are 4-5 teams going after Suns 2nd round picks. I suspect Lions will pay overs if they really want pick 24 otherwise Suns would make a deal with another team. F3 back would be more realistic, IMO.

Anyway, we will find out soon. Enjoy the draft.
