Another of our "allies" Academy guys from last weekend:

Ryan Gilder #23 Sherwood Magpies - here's one kid who we wouldn't need to work on his physicality

(Could he become our "Maynard" ...... slightly more likeable version though)

Can honestly say Ryan Gilder is as hard as nails. Boxes and trains harder than anyone I know. He would run through brick walls for his mates. He not only is a contested beast but his elite closing speed is exceptional.

Great kid also, he often stays back and helps out with the younger groups at Sherwood. Runs water for his old teams and is as humble as they come.

No. Feel free if you need to.

Actually we seem to keep a decent list including all the ones that have gone to other clubs. And have managed to have at least one male graduate to the AFL every year except 2021. The female academy is even stronger from what I can see

And for contrast here is the Suns list.

Makes it 31 males from our club and only about 23 from the Suns (I could have got a few gender neutral names wrong in that count).

Overall our academy seems to be generating more talent so far than the suns that go to both our club and others. The suns seem to be getting more guys that go higher in the draft but I think we could argue ours have gone on the be better players so far.

The Lions Academy has been receiving some negative posting here from a few posters.
Why is that? Sure nothing is ever perfect and improvements can always be made but evidence shows the criticism is perhaps misguided.

Evidence shows that we have done an exceptional job of developing and having academy kids drafted, not only by our club, but AFL wide. Long may it continue.

Edit: What is also noticable other clubs do not draft directly from the Suns Academy unless they are identified as high end picks.

Im totally looking in from the outside without being close to the academy process at all. So really hard to comment on anything but by the pure numbers we actually seem to be achieving some of the main goals the AFL/club want. Generating more local players for the club and adding to the overall pool of players.

The other main goal would probably be getting more players following the sport and staying involved at the local levels in QLD. I cant really judge that from Melbourne.

I have seen a lot of complaints from people there abouts the system that we arent bringing the right kids in and not doing enough with others. I cant judge if thats real or just aggrieved parents/coaches who dont agree with the current leadership. BUT I have heard the exact same complaints from every single development pathway for every single sport I have seen. I see those exact complaints at my local low level soccer club across the road - apparently every team has the wrong kids in the wrong position and not getting enough game time

Yep I have been a fan of Gilder for a while, seen only minimal highlights but to me he has "something".

M Malice ........................ another big tick !

I'm not a fan for what it does to the kids who don't make it.

However most complaints probably just come from disgruntled parents who think their kid should have.

If the goal is just to get more kids drafted regardless of the mental health and wellbeing of all involved, then they are probably going ok, but could probably get a few more drafted while destroying the local competition and the confidence of 30 other kids aged 15-20

As said I cant disagree on the mental welfare as have no insight to that.

But also the mental welfare and dropout rates for pretty much every elite sports program is brutal and poorly understood. There is so much between development methods of "brutal destroy everyone to forge the hardest survivors" to the "baby everyone to bring everyone along to develop fairly". Different kids thrive and become world class from all kinds of paths. I dont have any clue what our academy should be doing

The main issue is that they tell them all they are a chance, when really only a handful are a chance. Some have self awareness (or their parents do) and stay in the program for what it is, a good rep program where they get to play at a high level and have memorable experiences. Some also have enough awareness to see that the treatment of certain kids is far from equal, and they can work out who they rate from that, whereas others see the unequal treatment and lose their minds over the 'apparent' lack of opportunity they get (or their kids get)

Others go all in, when they were never a hope in hell and become disillusioned with the world and the game because they see not being drafted as a complete failure and see no value in the program other than being drafted.

The Lions state that one of their KPI's is developing better players for the local competition, and this is where there is dismal failure in addition to the mental well being of many young kids.

There are also folks in and around the academy that are constantly questioning why certain kids aren't there, 'because they are way better than Player A and Player B'. In some of those cases (not all) the academy probably agrees and the player might be better than 50% of the selected Academy squad, but the kid (or their parents) have enough awareness to know they aren't at the level to ever be on a draft radar so they choose not to participate at all and instead enjoy footy for the positives it can bring to your life, especially in clubland which is the lifeblood of our great sport.

Has anyone on this board ever had a different experience in a sporting organisation to what's being described here?

I was involved as a coach in junior cricket many moons ago and had some exposure to junior rep cricket/development squads.

The same happened there, always parents, coaches, staff etc whinging about selection decisions and looking for other things to complain about. As an example I was involved with a rep side and I was running a pre game warm up and one of the parents came over and said to me shouldn't you be getting the kids to do such and such a drill ... I said to him you want to take over mate, it's all yours, he walked away.

In another incident a mother complained about her son being bullied at training, told her your son gives as good as he gets. I didn't tell her that her kid was a smart arse prick.

Bolded is norm with every competitive sport trying to attract participants and dollars.
Everyone's child is a chance. There is also parental responsibility to ensure your child is appropriately prepared for the disappointment of Not Being Good Enough to succeed.
What are the chances of success where thousands across the country are also in it?

Perhaps the deliberate misleading of kids and telling them are all equal and will be treated equally, then doing the exact opposite is something that could be considered to alleviate some of those issues.

Either treat them differently, but tell them why and be transparent. Or actually treat them equally, and someone might surprise you if they get an opportunity (eg. Harris Andrews)

Part of the reason why sports are so important for kids IMO is it a great teacher of the world not being fair.

Hello, as a matter of interest do you think Brisbane will end up trading with Richmond to get points, or is it a delusional suggestion by Tigers supporters that you will trade 18 ( if you win flag) for 4 4th round picks.

36, 39 and 41 from Richmond, for 18 and 66 should get it done.
