Gold Coast want points for next year, which our future first will give them.

I'm not sure what their list situation looks like (sounds like they're not sure about their rookie list size yet either), but I would've thought they'd prefer our first round pick this year, and try to load up on more first round talent before their academy players next year.

Let's put a +600 points trade in our favor if anyone wants our future first.

CLUBS EYEING 2023 TALENT

CLUBS will look to trade out of this year's draft and invest picks in the 2023 crop with a bumper group looming.

Recruiters are buoyed by the under-17 prospects who have starred at different levels across the country this year, so much so that many clubs will see if they can swap picks in this year's draft for future selections in the 2023 intake.

There is genuine star quality at the top end of this year's draft pool and then an evenness of names beyond that which some scouts feel will trigger clubs to try and bank extra selections in the draft next year.

A host of bottom-aged players have impressed across this season, with Bendigo Pioneers youngster Harley Reid shaping as the early No.1 pick favourite for next year. Many recruiters would view him as a top-five pick in this year's draft if available.

Nick Watson, Zane Duursma, Ashton Moir, Darcy Wilson, Jed Walter, Mitch Edwards, Nate Caddy, Colby McKercher and Archer Reid are among some of the other exciting talents to have impressed this season a year out from being draft eligible.

The capacity for this year's group to feature at under-18 level prior to their draft seasons has also lifted hopes for next year's draft class, given the past two draft pools had opportunities wiped out by COVID-19. – Callum Twomey
If we are getting Dunkley, or any decent/best 22 contracted player this trade period, both our current and future first round picks are in play for said player and for points.

Of course, however I wonder if they would really want to take 3 guys in the first round. You know from experience that those guys will want to play almost immediately. Can they really offer that with a fairly competitive (for spots) best 22 already.

Ideally they would want both. Another first round pick this year, and second round picks in next year’s draft.

If they did pick up a future first round pick, it would be with the intention of trading next year for more points.

So other teams may look at also loading up on future second/third round picks, in the hope of trading up for Gold Coasts future first.

And GC 2024 first round pick will probably be up for grabs as well, with another strong academy group in two years time.

It's a fair point. I do wonder if it would give them an opportunity to go for someone like a Brayden George, who would spend the year recovering from an ACL, but also might fill the gap left by Rankine when he recovers.

I think the Bulldogs have shown that sometimes having multiple years of highly rated F/S and NGA picks is great for top end talents, but I do think they're suffering a bit on too much of their draft capital having been concentrated on the top end. Obviously you wouldn't say no to JUH and Darcy, but I reckon they're suffering a bit from having to otherwise draft quite late in those years.

An opportunity to take 3 first round talents, before you have a year or two of draft picks that may be wiped by academy talent, would be beneficial IMO.

I believe they can cover Rankine with players already on their list.

They have 3 players who have been included in this year’s U17 “all star” game, 2 KPP’s and a small forward.

From reading their board, they would like a KPD, outside mid and possibly a HBF.

If they get Adelaide’s first round pick and our first round pick, I could see them going Jed Busslinger with their first pick, Oliver Hollands with their second pick (they could potentially trade this pick back a couple of spots if another team is keen to move in to the top 10, and pick up a future second round pick in a live trade, and still get Hollands), and Jakob Ryan with their third pick.

Busslinger probably plays early in his career, but Hollands jr and Ryan would develop through their vfl team.

What is the bare minimum we can go into the 2023 draft with? I’d be aiming for that.

If we're trading future first then we have to hold a second rounder from memory.

Not sure about the rest of the picks.

Either a first round pick, which according to draft bid matching rules, where the AFL allow you to carry a points deficit in to the future draft, will carry the value of pick 18 (985 points).

Or a pick in rounds 2, 3 and 4. Though I believe the AFL will allow say a second round pick and two third round picks, or two seconds and a third.

If it’s one pick in each of the later rounds, that holds a value of 741 points, if we potentially carry a deficit in to next year’s draft.

How did they end up going?

Will was monstrous. Easily best on ground.

32 touches, 7 tackles, 9 inside 50s and a goal.

Levi relatively quiet.

Given you currently don't even have enough points for matching a likely pick 1 bid on Ashcroft, I'm wondering what you think the club will do about Jaspa Fletcher now touted a likely mid/late teens selection?

McStay compo plus some other bits and pieces.

We will take him unless someone does a ridiculous early first bid. As Hollow Night mentioned we will get a compo pick for McStay and we will do trades to make sure we cover a first for Ashcroft and another first for Fletcher.

hate to be a broken record, but Fletcher in first round would be a mistake for the Lions or anyone that bids on him that early. He is late 2nd round talent at best.

In your opinion of course- seems to be a lot with a different opinion. From the games I have seen has all the attributes to be a very good player.

i dont think fletcher has officially agreed to be nominated by the club yet so we're still waiting on that anyway
I doubt there'll be an announcement. It only gets beaten up and publicised for guys likely to go in the first few picks. The rest just let it happen it in the background and you'll find out at the deadline.

Is this all based on your opinion? Or do you have knowledge saying if he’s bid on in the first round the Lions won’t match?
Based on my viewings he has a lot of attributes that really fit what style of game we should be aiming for. I think he is what everyone is hoping Sharp can become, a strong running link-up player that can run up and down all day while using the ball well. Jaspa has shown he can find and use the ball a lot better than Sharp at this point.
