Clearly not widely considered the best

Depends if the clubs in question want to leave a good impression with their draftees.

I wouldn't want a club to bid on someone, then have that matched, then have me picked. Makes it seem like I would not be what the club wanted.

For Richmond, North and Adelaide, the latter of which hasn't had a high draft pick turn good in ages, first impressions are important for their rebuilds.

I think it's the Saints who are at pick 5 who will match, but they're a basket-case to begin with.

Think across a lot of sports there is an unwillingness to ditch sunk costs and double down on positions if you miss.

Obviously afl is tough because players might take 4 years to get close to their peak and therefore will survive, but certainly in the NFL in a lot of positions you can know pretty quickly if a player isn’t ever going to be good enough.
Also unlike the NFL we have the capacity to have multiples of the same position for all but ruck usually anyway with them both being effective so taking that longer term risk doesn't have as much downside if it does pay off.

Most draftees are in that situation. Would whoever gets selected by Richmond at pick 6 be pissed they didn’t make him the number 1 pick?

Duursma last year was Norths 3rd choice. I doubt he holds that against them

It happens all the time

If we do see LAshcroft and Marshall slide, do we try to sneak in a +1 pick before Gallop or try to maximise points for next year?
If we took 4 draftees over the next 2 nights eg. Ashcroft/Marshall/Gallop/Gilder would that mean we would have to pass on the mooted acquisition of Sam Day?

Yes, unless another club drafts Craven or Joyce.

In saying that, I wouldn't be surprised if we try and get some more points next year when we trade tonight.

Very true. Not taking some talls early in the rebuild is very risky.

Actually its interesting seeing Richmond's approach tonight. There are a lot of mids that they can pick from early but will they spend the currency on the talls? Personally think they desperately need at least one or two tall forwards and waiting till the picks nearer 20 is risky
Yeah I really think if I was Richmond I would have been trying to stagger some of my picks into next year's draft. And I guess maybe they still will tonight.

And even then move 1 or 2 of those into the 2026 draft. I sort of question if taking 8 players in one draft is the best thing for your build, regardless of how good they are.

I think the difference in draft age also influences this. NFL players who get drafted are far closer to the finished product than AFL players.

Yeah absolutely. Massive difference between recruting a high school kid at 18 who is 200cm but needs to put on 10-15kg vs even a 21 year old who has been in a semi-professional environment for a couple of years (and may have already earned decent money through NIL if they are good).

I don't follow the NBA closely but obviously the ages there are a bit more similar, but its tough because one player has such an outsized influence on a 5 person sport.

From the Herald Sun blog:

With their later picks, the Lions have been linked to talls including Charlie Nicholls and Floyd Burmeister, along with small forward Rhys Unwin. Brisbane has also nominated several academy prospects, with 194cm key forward Ty Gallop in the mix to be taken as a Category B rookie. He could even attract a late draft bid.

Correct me if I am wrong but we don't even have a spare Cat B rookie spot to use for Gallop?

Worst case for us tonight is probably North trading pick 2 to the Saints. We know they’ll bid.

I might cast a hex over whoever bids on Levi for 150 years of mediocrity. Something the Saints cannot afford.

This feels like you'd be improving their fortunes. Only 150 years? They'd take that.

Reading a book on the history of the VFL/AFL transition period today and I raised that a 30 year old has technically seen every premiership winning club win except one (St Kilda). The last time that was true (I think) would be 1974 when Fitzroy's drought joined South Melbourne's in being over three decades long.

Congrats to St Kilda for maintaining their streak in the face of all their compatriots ending theirs!

At the same time though if you get picked at pick twenty you surely know that the club would trade you in a heartbeat to get the number one pick of that year.

There would obviously reach a certain point where a player wouldn’t feel like this because they are more worried about not being picked at all. It’s becomes less about being a teams preferred pick to whether or not any team though you were draftable at all.

There would be some weird mostly psychological break points where some people might care. First, top 10, first round, second round, etc. Where being one spot higher or lower is meaningless but also more or less prestigious.

I wonder if the retention of Craven is pending who is available in the later part of the draft. If we have two prospects available to us who are high on our draft board do we select 4 players, overlook Craven and recruit Day?

Or is the more likely option if we draft 4 that we retain Craven and pass on Day?
