Not sure why Melbourne are involved , but I don't mind it tbh.Shows which clubs the AFL value as draw cards and im sure we will get some benefit out of it down the line. It means we get an extra bye during the season as well and Carlton will have also travelled to QLD so neither team is dissadvantaged. If we lose to Dimma first up though that will sting a bit, the boys better be up for it

I read that in the Herald Sun, unlikely that would occur.

It’s expected Carlton and Richmond will again ask to open the season on a Thursday night.
The round 1 season-starter has traditionally been the domain of the Tigers and Blues.

Outside of the two Covid years when crowds were restricted, the past four round 1 attendances between those two teams have attracted 88,804, 72,179, 85,016 and 91,151 fans.

On the AFL website, it says>>

THE AFL has floated with clubs a Sydney-focused split round to begin the 2024 season, which would see both the Giants and the Swans hosting blockbuster standalone fixtures across an earlier weekend of action.

It's understood the proposed round one fixture, which was distributed to clubs last week but is not final, would feature Greater Western Sydney kicking off the 2024 season against Collingwood on a Saturday night before Sydney plays Melbourne on the Sunday afternoon.

Every other club's season-openers would then be played the following weekend and would likely feature Carlton's annual Thursday night clash against Richmond at the MCG.
Carltoon's annual Thursday night clash with...?!?...WTF?!?!
More like RICHMOND'S annual Thursday night clash against Carltoon at the 'G'

apart from what i want this is what we'll get,

GC in Adelaide as one of our home games & GC up there
WCE & Frem in perth (i want this)
Adel & Port in Adel (ok with this)
GWS in Syd (better than going to Bris,& we play well gainst GWS)

double ups:
GWS & Port
Ess & Adel
GC,WCE

happy to play Geelol down there.
2 trips to perth virtually rules out tassie

so this makes 7 x interstate trips, 1 x down to geelong,2 x marvel,13 x MCG games

Haha 100% most people look at it as us being the anchoring team than the basket case blues of the last decade

I did read some articles last night that said the annual Richmond and Carlton traditional round one game will occur in round two!
This year, it will be the blues home game!

Except that the following week is Gather Round, dumbness never ceases to amaze me in AFL land, as for this splitting of rounds and s**t to start the season, looks like a horrible mess. There is already a weeks break before round 1 so why then have a bye one or two weeks later, it's stupid.
Gilligans fingers still in the pie , has he left yet?

lmfao shemans being chosen over bummers while the rest of the big 4 do the heavy lifting

bummers minnows
As i read somewhere, if the AFL had any brains they would play coll/rich/melb/ess in this bullshit and then have all four have a bye the weekend before or after anzac eve/day.

Same as how they can't have all the teams having byes in the middle of the season play each other the following week, brain dead the lot of them.

Gather round should be once only clashes which has also caused a manipulation in how the fixture is structured, finishing 13th now delivers you a draw the equal of finishing 4th, this year 2022 5th placed Melbourne had a 2-2-2 split the same as 2022 13th placed Hawthorn.

So as it stands we'll play Gold Coast away to start the season on March 9th, then Carlton away in round 2 with Gather round to follow 3 weeks later on April 4th-7th. The way it looks we may have a bye on the weekend of April 20-22 so that we can play the ANZAC Eve game on April 24th which is a Wednesday night next year.

R1 Suns Away March 8-9th
R2 Blues Away March 14th
R3 March 22-24
R4 March 28-April 1 - Easter Weekend
R5 Gather Round April 4-7th
R6 April 12-14
R7 BYE
R8 ANZAC EVE Home Game

Based on that it's possible we could play up to 4 games as the away team in the first 2 months of the season which would mean a better run of home games to end the season.

Just more games to be scheduled at comic book stadium.

GC Round 1 away is shit for us IMO.

Horrible time to play them in those conditions, it's pretty much a loss for us, then coming back to a strong Carlton outfit in round 2, can genuinely see that being an 0-2 start to the year which although doesn't sound that bad, history shows it's pretty hard to recover from.

I don't mind missing finals next year for the bigger picture, but would like the season to be alive for a while before it starts to get away from us. Aren't we meant to be getting an easier draw?

So much for a good start to the season after finishing outside the 8!!!

Better than at Etihad. Plus we'll have a point to prove against Dimma so I hope we'll come out hard. Dees have typically come out firing early after a high intensity pre-season as opposed to us who have typically taken 6 weeks to get moving. Hopefully Yze brings the early intensity with him.
