Thinking about the draw as a whole and how to make it more even.
Each side plays each other once to qualify for the final 8.(17 rnds).
Bottom 8 too bad your season ends early.
Top 8 then play each other.
7 weeks so top 4 sides get 4 home finals
End of week 7.Top 2 sides play in the GF.

Thoughts?
Broadcasters would crack the sads because less games to televise.

Because the gimps at AFL house worship money it will never happen.

We need 2 less teams or a longer season. If Tassie comes in, it will be even worse. Suspect North will get merged into the Giants and 18 teams.

Less games but lets be honest. The last 5-6 games 1/3 of the sides are out of contention.Only diehard fans would watch.
Wheras 8 weeks of Finals football makes up for it from a Broadcaster POV.

I agree.Less teams the better.Talent is stretched to the limit.

The fixture should be easy as piss to make fair.
1-17 - play each other once
18 - Bye round
19 - Gather round
19 - 23 - Take the ladder after everyone has played once and then do the conference break up like they do now.

You can easily have some parity for distance travelled and short breaks built in as well.

This is the only part I don't like. Simply because I don't like the uncertainty about it.

If the AFL's goal is equalisation, and they think the fixture plays to that, then best bench mark is the previous season. Just like the draft is based on the previous season.

So I would do something like:

1-18 Play everyone once, Melb teams only visit each state once (eg play Crows in Adl, Port in Melb) the bye is in there too.
19 - Rather than Gather, it could be marquee round, so Derby's, Showdowns, rivalry type games
20-24 - You groups the prevoius years ladder into 3 groups of 6. You play your 5 oppoenents in your group a second time.

The fairness is, the top 6 have to beat other top 6 teams to stay in the top 6
The 7-12 teams are all the ones battling for a spot in the 8, so they get to play(beat) like minded teams to take their spot
13-18 - if these are the struggling teams, let them play each other twice, it helps them be more competitive on the field more often

The only way the fixture would be equal, play each other twice. Won’t happen though.
well, I get the feeling, a 20th team wont be far away, so a single round fixture might be as close as it gets

FUTURE WITH 20 TEAMS
20 teams x 19 Oppo = 190 games a season
Top 10 finals = 13 games
TOTAL = 203
(212 with a Gather Round)

SEASON 2023
18 teams x 17 Oppo = 153 games
6 extra rounds = 54 games
top 8 finals = 9 games
TOTAL = 216 Games
(207 without Gather round)

about the same amount of games for braodcasters, the extra game each week probably means guaranteed Thursdays nights every week, again for the broadcaster...

Two Division Comp it's coming!
(with Tassy and N.T...)
Then chase NU Zeelund to join, North and South Eylunds!
Then Papua and New Guinea..
Then the magic 12 number is reached and we can have promotion and demotion through the State Leagues!
Simples!

Yep,window closed, slamming shut any chance the AFL woulda had on stealing eyes
Nrl Rd.1 spread out over 2 Wknds with 4 sides opening the season in Vegas on Saturday 2nd March
Crucially theyve programmed Storm v Penrith on the friday nite,in Melb, a ratings big hitter for the NRL
a tru masterstoke from PVL,they the NRL actually start the season proper the same time as last season

this leaves AFL HQ with only 2 options

1.keep Rd.1 as per normal mid-late march (24/25 weeks after GF week)
2.run the risk of a Friday 1st of March season opener ? (22 weeks after GF)

Great a home game in Adelaide. You just know we'll play saints twice and of course it'll be at Marvel
its an away game

we will host the aints again later in the year at marvel , nothing surer !

Couldn't give a s**t who we play in Adelaide(so long as its not Adelaide or Port), I just hope we get a Saints/Richmond game in melbourne next year.
if we do its at marvel (will be an aints home game )

Won't be many tickets for the game, how the hell can i book a fly in fly out flight if i don't even know if i can score a ticket to the game.

If getting dumped at Norwood is any indication we will be going down the highway to KP this year as well.
we are the only club in history to outdraw colonwood while both top 4 and look how the afl treats us

I was only coming here to see what the thoughts from your fans were about with the AFL shafting your fanbase with the Gather Rd fixture. You'd probably already have enough fans coming over to sell out Norwood Oval in itself.

But on your suggestion for Rd 19-23. Simply, no.

There is zero way to guarantee an even fixture on the h&a front. In theory it's by far the fairest, but the second you dive deep into it. It's sheer lunacy as the logistics are impossible to ensure a fair fixture on the h&a front. You'll get some teams with 12h, and others with 10.
