Seems to be shaping up okay so far.

Avoided an adelaide side in gather round - tick

Early start to the year - extra bye - tick

first game against another side that had a late start to pre season - tick

Would be great if that first perth games is eagles. such a waste to play them at the gabba.

The two things i always look for are the games we are almost certain to lose given our history at venues and getting good sides at the gabba

So hoping to avoid as much as possible - Geelong at geelong, dogs at ballarat, hawthorn in launceston (surely we won't lose at the mcg again!), adelaide or port in adelaide (2 losses last year would have really dented our confidence)

Hoping to get WC not Freo at perth - the latter has given us a lot of trouble there

And the other major factor is what games you get at the gabba for the 12 teams you only play once. 6 of those games will be at the gabba, you want the tougher teams at the gabba and easier teams away. We will play probably half of the best 8 so if we get half once, let's say it's Dogs / Dees / GWS / crows, we won't as many of them at gabba as possible.

perhaps this is stating the obvious but i feel as though people get a bit carried away with who you play twice - where we play teams matters a lot more for us i reckon, given we are interstate, get sent to dodgy venues, and just went 13-0 at the gabba

I don’t mind getting Geelong in Geelong.
They are ripe for the picking and we need to get a win there sometime.

only issue is if the afl considers it a vic game for the purpose of victoria based supporters. getting to geelong is such a hassle, cant see myself doing it. basically impossible if its a night game. likely means one less opportunity to see the team play

I did it in 2021 and 2022 and stunk. Staying on the bellarine peninsula was good though.

This is not confirmed but don't be surprised if we have a bye in round 2 meaning our season would start like this.

Round 0 Carlton at the Gabba
Round 1 West Coast away
Round 2 bye
Round 3 Collingwood Gabba
Round 4 North @ Norwood

Sounds good to me.

Not a fan of playing Collingwood straight after the bye, given how results of such matches have gone recently.

Also, first time playing West Coast away since 2017, and first time ever at Perth Stadium.

The NRL fixture has just been released.
Their opening 2 games are in Las Vegas on Sunday 3rd March.
The remainder of the NRL round 1 is the 7th to 10th March. The same dates as the so-called AFL round zero.

I have been an advocate for the AFL to start our round 1 fixture the same time as the NRL. So, this is happening by chance in 2024.
Usually, the AFL starts 2 weeks later, and this gives a free hit media wise to the NRL in the northern states.
For the other states it has no bearing as they don't care one way or the other about NRL.

I wish the AFL would just start the normal round 1 the same weekend as the NRL's round 1 from this year onwards.
That would have the same or better impact than their Round zero four northern states games.

I doubt the attendance on these 4 games will be any better than if they occurred during a normal fixture.
The total TV ratings may be better for the 4 games than if they formed part of a normal round.
However, when the bye round comes, the total TV ratings will be down for that shortened round.

I just don't see any spotlight on the northern states via additional media coverage in Sydney or Brisbane during the opening weekend of the NRL. Or any other round for that matter if the NRL are playing.

I am sure of one thing the Melbourne based media and other states won't be kind to the AFL during round zero.

Round 1 in 2023 was the 3rd highest opening round of all time.
Thats a lot of people missing out in the AFL states.

So another year that we're not playing West Coast at Optus.
Always the possibility we have to travel to Perth twice.

Similar to travelling to Adelaide Oval twice this year + Mt Barker trip.

I don’t mind it because it kinda forces us to be in a good headspace right from the start of the year. With a couple of hard ones to start.

That’s seems like such a long time away.
It does but it will come around really quickly IMO... Christmas will be on us soon...then new year will be done and dusted then pre season training really kicks in, we'll be at the Gabba before you know it.

My old man used to tell me that the older you get the quicker time goes, I didn't believe him at the time, as I have aged I have realised he was spot on.
