Pretty pissed off with the Gather round fixture. Shafted both years now, both vs North, one at a random rural footy oval, and now the second at Norwood but at a time when a lot will still be at work.

I’m sure glad the AFL got to free up the Saturday night for the absolute blockbuster that is Geelong vs Bulldogs though, they sure know what will get Adelaide excited

I'd actually rather play at Norwood or Mt Barker. In fact I suggested to the club they request this, on the grounds it guarantees we don't play Adelaide or Port.

Yeah Friday at 4:40 isn't great but it's better for us than for Freo who were drawn in that timeslot last year, given the time difference.

Also, playing nice and early in the round gives those travelling the chance to get the game out of the way early and make the most of the rest of the weekend, whether that involves going to other games or making the most of whatever else Adelaide has going on.

Playing North at Norwood as a home game suggests we're strong odds to be playing them in Hobart later in the season
It doesn't count as a home or away game. If we play North a second time it could be a home game for either of us.

I'd be surprised if we got them twice. Pretty sure Gather Round fixtures don't count on the home/away front at all.

Actually just recalled the top/middle/bottom six fixturing.

We're guaranteed home and away against the Suns, a bottom six team so this will be our only game against the Roos.

That’s horrible.

Who’s going to be able to get down for a 4.40pm start on a Friday?? Worst possible spot.

At least with a Saturday game at Mt Barker you can make a weekend of it, visit Hahndorf and the Adelaide hills etc.
Maybe people working from the CBD could attend but not the majority of the general public, especially if I went given the train ride takes 1hr from my place to city.

Just don’t understand why we have to play North again at neutral venue also and would have preferred if we played either Richmond or St. Kilda on the Sunday arvo slot (but at AO) and then maybe get the Collingwood vs. Hawthorn match to be played at 5.40pm.

Also don’t understand the popularity behind Norwood Oval IMO, sure it is the only suitable SANFL ground to host it, but there was so much potential to take it around the state also.

Crows fans seemed fairly disparaging of the place yesterday. What's the issue with the ground? I hear access isn't great
Haven’t been there in ages, but the entrances are quite small and crowded while there really isn’t any shade or cover (only 1 grandstand that does) and it isn’t just the greatest place to watch AFL.

In saying that, it is only 4km from Adelaide Oval and the central train station, while it’s better than every other SANFL ground, but wasn’t the concept of gather round is for “most” matches to be played at the same venue.

They really missed the trick with helping SA government redevelop ovals in regional areas of the state and could host 6x Adelaide Oval (3x double headers), 1x Mount Barker, 1x Barossa and 1x elsewhere (Victor Harbour) perhaps.

Just for the record, I wasn't suggesting we'd be missing out on a home game, just that fixturing this matchup as a nominal Lions home game means we'd not get North at home 'again' in 2024. But that now seems moot anyway given the fixture weighting.

Oh ok, what is the actual breakdown?

I found the breakdown used for the 2023 fixture; I assume the same will be used for 2024.

To best manage on-field equity for all clubs under the current competition model, the 2023 fixture has again been constructed around the ‘weighted rule’, whereby the final ladder from the previous season is grouped into the top six teams, middle six teams and bottom six teams, with double match-ups for all clubs managed as follows:

−TOP SIX: Clubs ranked 1-6 on the 2022 ladder will have a minimum of two and maximum of three return meetings with other top six clubs. They will have a minimum of one and maximum of two return meetings with clubs ranked 7-12. They will have a minimum of one and a maximum of two return meetings with clubs ranked 13-18.

−MIDDLE SIX: Clubs ranked 7-12 on the 2022 ladder will have a minimum of one and maximum of two return meetings with clubs ranked 1-6 on the ladder. They will have a minimum of two and maximum of three return meetings with other middle six clubs. They will have a minimum of one and maximum of two return meetings with clubs ranked 13-18.

−BOTTOM SIX: Clubs ranked 13-18 on the 2022 ladder will have a minimum of one and a maximum of two return meetings with clubs ranked 1-6. They will have a minimum of one or a maximum of two return meetings with clubs ranked 7-12. They will have a minimum of two and a maximum of three return meetings with other bottom six clubs.

So it looks like a further meeting with North is in fact still possible.

I get a bit sick of our games being sent to Timbuktu all the time, while the Suns and Giants get looked after.
We bring the crowds to Timbuktu. What do the Giants bring? Who wants a tsunami.
